Chris Johnson talks Jets, health and motivation

Newest Jet Chris Johnson spoke to the New York media on Thursday afternoon, hitting on the reason he signed with New York, the health of his knee and motivation coming off a down year in 2013.

Johnson said he and his agent spoke with many teams, but decided on the Jets because of  their aggressive nature.

“Coming in and meeting with the coaches and the type of coach Rex Ryan is… He’s an aggressive type of coach and I’m an aggressive type of player,” Johnson said. “From talking to Rex and talking to Marty [Mornhinweg], they’ll put everybody in the best position to help everybody win.”

Johnson continued:

They know how to win, with the type of team they have. They have a great defense and any time you have a great defense, you give yourself a chance to win. We know, as an organization, if we can put up some points, they will give us a good chance to win.

Johnson said his knee, on which he had surgery to repair a torn meniscus, is healthy and he’s close to resuming football activities. He shot down any rumors of arthritis in his knee. He believes he’ll be ready for the start of training camp.

Coming off a statistically down season with the Titans in 2013, Johnson said he’d use the negativity as motivation moving forward.

“No matter how good you do… there’s always going to be that person (that says) something negative,” he said. “It’s good to have a chip on your shoulder, to have things to motivate you. I can turn a bad thing into a good thing if it gives me motivation.

“Once you rush for 2000 yards, you set an expectation for yourself,” he said.

Johnson said he plans on moving on from his career in Tennessee and will only look ahead with the rest of his career, starting with the Jets.

“Last year, that was last year. This year is about winning,” he said.

Johnson signed a two-year, $8 million deal with the Jets on April 16.

this could be a huge, huge signing for the jets..Ivory & Johnson (Powell is not a slouch in his own right) + whomever they end up drafting...gotta like the idzik plan so far.

The thing of us signing Chris Johnson is that we have now the very best opportunity in the draft to select the best player and not just a position player. Also Marty will be using both Ivory (playing the back) and Johnson (wide)  at the same time.   Think about it  Ivory (back), Johnson (wide), and Decker (wide), Kerley (wide).  That my friend is a dangerous offense! now we need a TE that could catch.

The experts are saying the Jets "grossly" overpayed for Johnson. He is a big name and plays a nice role for the Jets. Bent, why does it seem that RB's used to be able last longer than today's backs? CJ is done after 6 seasons? Curtis Martin was able to play at a high level for 11+, LT played well for 9, etc... Plus aren't backs being used less than ever before?

Wow, just read the article about CJ racing the Cheetah.  CJ lost, by the way.  Not a good sign.

Anyway, the article said that the fastest human foot speed ever recorded was 23.35 MPH.  Can that be right?  I have gotten the treadmills at the gym up to 25 MPH.  I can do about a minute at 28 MPH, the top speed of the treadmill.  I've never tried going faster, but I assume I could probably hit 32-35 MPH under the right conditions.

And with this offense expect Geno to beat Vick!

@DrJonathanReefer

That is one heck of a 4th round you got there!

Don't like your last 5 picks though.

Not a big fan of picking a strong safety in the 3rd round.

What experts?  If CJ realizes his role, buys into the system, thinks team first, he can flourish here.  The Jets can flourish.

@Paul Samuels  First, there are a couple experts sitting in Florham Park who don't think CJs career is over.  Placed a pretty sizable bet on it.

Second, take a look at Martin's ypc over the various years.  His first year with the Jets he averaged 3.5 ypc after hitting 4.2 ypc his last year in NE.  The experts are saying CJ is done because he dipped to 3.9?  Expert please.  Martin bounced back, then dipped, the bounced back a couple times in his career, no reason CJ can't either, particularly now that his workload will be decreased.

Third, Martin is in the Hall of Fame.  And he got there by having a long and productive career.  Not many guys get there.

@Paul Samuels  I'd attribute it to the fact that defensive players are so much bigger and faster the cumulative punishment over the course of a career is more.

Bent

@Ceifus Hornswoggle  Can you please set the treadmill to 35mph next time you go down the gym and get someone to film the results, then get one of the nurses in hospital to forward us the video?

Bent

@Ceifus Hornswoggle  Spent - that's an average over 100m, I believe.

Usain Bolt's top speed was clocked at 29.2.

yeah i couldn't believe how the 4th round fell.

@boomer @Paul SamuelsI was just using Martin as a Jet FA signing/example, not as a means of comparing the two. But look at any RB that has played for 9+ seasons, and tell me what their stats were in years 7-9.

Ceifus Hornswoggle

@Bent @Ceifus Hornswoggle

The treadmills only go up to 28 MPH, but perhaps I can find a faster one at another gym.  I work out at Curves in Manhattan, which is gym for women only (except for me, but I'm really good looking and ripped, so I pretty much do whatever I want).  Maybe at the Planet Fitness up the road they have a faster treadmill.

Really wouldn't need a disclaimer if people understood.

Mocks are fun leading up to the draft but are in no way indicative of what teams think about a number of unknown "gems" that get drafted too early, leading fans to get upset about guys being drafted way too early.

a57se
a57se

@bklyndude @a57se

i think anyone who has dabbled around with mock drafts a little understands that.....

@a57se @DrJonathanReefer

You need a disclaimer because there isn't one BPA board that all GM's use.  There are 32 separate BPA boards specific to each team that nobody has access to.

Of course fans are surprised when mock "experts" are surprised and don't agree with teams assessments.  These "experts" then give team grades afterwards based on their own evaluations.

DrJonathanReefer
DrJonathanReefer

@WW85 @DrJonathanReefer

Yup, but that depends on who is on the board. I don't think we need a CB but if one of the top 2 fall into the 2nd round, i'm taking him.

WW85
WW85

@DrJonathanReefer  So can you play with it & say if the BPA is close, then take more CBs, WRs for example?

DrJonathanReefer
DrJonathanReefer

@a57se @WW85

Yeah, I used Fanspeak.

But I went BPA- DT with some extra thought on a few. Like only taking 1 RB even though BPA dictated otherwise.

a57se
a57se

@WW85

What you are describing is how Drafteks' mock works...all you do there is set priorities for positions then the computer does the rst and just shows you what you would ned up with.

Fanspeak, the computer picks for all the other teams but YOU select who your team picks.

WW85
WW85

@DrJonathanReefer  How does the model work? You tell the system to emphasize need or BPA to a certain amount?

DrJonathanReefer
DrJonathanReefer

yup, and Rex knows it too. (I will never understand doubting Rex on his D)

Though it all depends on how the board plays out.

a57se
a57se

@DrJonathanReefer

That is correct!

That is why I am looking at CB's later in the draft who fit that profile and there are a few of them......

DrJonathanReefer
DrJonathanReefer

@WW85 @DrJonathanReefer

It's true too. With Po'uh, Devito and Ellis, we needed great man CBs so we could get pressure by blitzing DBs who would otherwise help in coverage.

Now with the Son's + coples, we can get the pressure by the dline. so we need CBs who are great at pressing(patterson, lankster) so it throws off the rhythm quick pass that hurt us last year. And keep the extra CBs/LBS/Safety we used to blitz in coverage.

We don't need 2 top 10 CBs anymore, our D has evolved with the players we have brought in.

@DrJonathanReefer

Disclaimer: Mock drafts are an exercise that allows us to take a step back, ask questions, and consider possibilities and scenarios. Everyone is surprised on draft day... so certain sections of a mock draft should surprise you. Do not get caught up on accuracy. Instead, check the reasoning and weigh the probability.3

Need to put this on all mock drafts...:)

DrJonathanReefer

@WW85 @DrJonathanReefer

we dafted a CB first round last year. That is our top corner pick. How many teams have 2 shut down first round CBs? Milliner, walls, lankster, wilson and patterson is deep enough. You all got spoiled with Revis and Cro, but we had to have the CBS so we could blitz to get pressure. Need good cover CBs to blitz alot. Well, we fixed that with the Dline.

We need to replace Harris. If Mosley Falls to 49 they are stupid not to take him. he is top 20 talent.

If idzik drafts this top 6, thats a hell of a draft. ( i highly doubt it'd be possible)

a57se
a57se

@WW85

CJ Mosley would be a steal in round 2 at pick 49.....if he was there and the Jets DIDn't take him,. that would be a shocker.

WW85
WW85

@DrJonathanReefer No CB until rd 5?   We dont need ILB or RB. There is no way they are taking ILB in rd 2--Maybe OLB. But really I'd be shocked if the 1st 2 rounds werent WR CB or CB WR.  Would have expected 2 CBs, 2WRS.  I cant imagine a safety early either.  Judging by Seattle, I could see OL coming early.

DrJonathanReefer
DrJonathanReefer

@a57se @DrJonathanReefer

well i  went  BPA + some thought.  I just don't know what pressing need i missed. Punter?

I did a few just BPA, but i'd ended up with the BradySucks Draft.

@DrJonathanReefer

Why would anyone pick anything but the guy they thought was the best player????
