Of particular interest is ex-Jet David Clowney’s to revive his professional career with the Montreal Alouettes. Clowney hasn’t played in the NFL since 2010, but did catch four passes in preseason with the Bills last year. He suffered a scare in his first preseason game with the Alouettes when he injured his neck and was immobilized on the field, but it was diagnosed as a stinger and he should be healthy for the upcoming season.
Two other ex-Jets are joining the CFL this year; wide receiver Eron Riley – who played one game with the Jets during the 2011 season and caught four passes last year in preseason and defensive back DeAngelo Smith, who was cut before during OTA’s last May.
The Toronto Argonauts won last year’s Grey Cup and several of their key players have links to the Jets. The defensive MVP, Ricky Foley, was with the Jets briefly in September 2010 and the offensive MVP, Chad Kackert, almost signed with the Jets in February. Also, Quarterback Ricky Ray was with the Jets in preseason in 2004 and the league’s MVP – receiver and return man Chad Owens – almost signed with the Jets in 2011. Their roster also included kicker/punter Swayze Waters, who had a tryout with the Jets last year and Ahmad “Batman” Carroll, who played for the Jets in 2008 and 2009. Carroll retired at the end of the 2012 season.
After the jump, a list of some other ex-Jets in the CFL. How many of these can you remember?
Emmanuel Arceneaux – released in May after signing a futures deal after the 2012 season
Jovon Johnson – was with the Jets in preseason in 2006, but has since played for seven years in the CFL
Chris Jennings – was with the Jets in preseason in 2011, where he had this 69-yard run
Marcus Henry – a sixth-round pick in 2008, he spent two full years on the practice squad but never made the active roster
Tyron Brackenridge – signed a futures contract after the 2008 season, but was released in May 2009
Drew Willy – was with the Jets in preseason in 2011 and played most of the last preseason game after Greg McElroy got hurt, passing for 109 yards and this touchdown
Na’shan Goddard – spent time with the Jets in 2006, but never made it onto the active roster
Larry Taylor – was with the Jets in 2010 and featured on Hard Knocks, catching four passes and doing a good job as a return man, but was placed on the practice squad when camp ended and released a month later.
