Is it a coikydink that when SackDance99 and tsjc68 show up this blog turns into a boring old football x's and o's football forum? Geez, where's all the Gholston talk and chicken littling?

Horrible Hypothetical: Would you rather have the 2014 NYJets or the 2010 NYJets

Jets DL while good, doesn't always supply quick pressure. I've seen more than a few QBs flinch(brady especially)expecting the rush to get to them quickly only to realize that their line is holding up. they then proceed to have a lot of time in the pocket to take shots downfield. Rex is great at simulating pressure, but I think it will be difficult to stop the chunk plays if the DL doesn't supply consistent quick pressure.

Good to see J.J. Watt's contract get signed. Now Wilkerson is lined up for his own pay day  this offseason. I'd say approx. 3/4's of Watt's contract, depending on how this season goes. Could go up, and I kind of hope it does because that only means good things for us.

Lots of optimism here today. I wish I was feeling it as much as some of you guys. No worries about the CBs because suddenly our pass rush is as good as the Giants when they won the SB and that will make up for them? They better get to the QB fast.

@WW85 Am I allowed Trevor Pryce or Kris Jenkins on my 2010 team?

Brendan

@WW85 For a single winner-take-all game? 2010.

For multiple years going forward? Probably 2014. If you take 2010's squad you'd just have to rebuild it and end up with a 2014 team, only with different young players.

@idothis2 I'm not sure I agree with how you are looking at this. For example, Brady makes his drop and lets the ball go. Having the 2 TEs and slot guy over the short middle of the field enables him to do this. It's why the deep threat is not being used so much against us. It's not all on the DL...they need to have a little time to do what they do. Quick pressure (like you are looking for)  is not always achievable.

@levi The reason to be optimistic, at least IMO, is because based on how the offense has looked in preseason, and adding in a reasonable improvement in the pass rush and hopefully some overall improvement from Dee Milliner, there's a strong possibility that this team is a fair amount better than last year's edition overall.

Consider that we may be improved at the safety spot, and our corner play will probably not be all that much worse than last year, as a floor. I would expect the secondary as whole to be around where they were last year....maybe a little better, maybe a little worse. I'll be the first to say that the corner situation was mishandled but it doesn't mean this team can't be good this year.

It's fool hardy...Does anyone think ( other then the usually morons ) that anyone is gonna attempt to run at us? Would you run at the Jets front four ? Everyone is gonna pass, roll out, max protect. I wouldn't be surprised if we set a modern day record for pass attempts against...

SackDance99
SackDance99

@levi Last season the Jets were 13th in the NFL with 41 sacks; the Saints were 4th with 49.  So, if you're an optimist, you think that Sheldon will add some sacks to his game, that Babin is an upgrade over Barnes (and, if Barnes had been healthy, maybe the Jets get to the top 5) and you have to believe (as I do) that Coples has double-digit sack potential.  IMO, 50+ sacks are not out of the question.

tsjc68
tsjc68

@levi

It's a combination of the following:

A.) Our CBs aren't as bad as people think (even if they're not truly "good")

B.) Our passrush will mask some flaws

C.) The Raiders are starting a rookie, who probably isn't good enough to either take advantage of our weaknesses in the secondary or avoid the strength of our passrush

D.) The CBs will get better as the year goes forward (both in health and experience)

Brendan
Brendan

@levi The Jets' pass rush being good isn't a new thing. It's just ignored in favor of panic over the CB's. I've been saying this about the DL/CB for weeks/months. Even before the recent CB events.

Am I allowed Dex McDougle, Shaq Evans, and Jermaine Cunningham on my 2014 team?

SackDance99
SackDance99

@Brendan @WW85 Defensively, the 2010 team was dominated by the ILBs and CBs.  This team has way more defensive talent spread around, even if the CBs are weaker.  Offensively, it comes down to Geno-Marty against Sanchez-Schotty.  I'll take the former.

BDarc23

@bobbyj The Raiders have a rookie QB with MJD and McFadden as RBs. I'm pretty sure they will be running.

This from the guy who told me that Patterson was an upgrade/ man/ press CB, that Dewan Landry was a good as Laron Landry, that it was no big deal that Matt Slason was being subbed out, & eventually launched off for Vlad ( I can't pass protect to save my life ) Ducase, David Garrade is gonna start, Rex shouldn't have been fired when Idzik was brought in ( because they have different agenda's see out current secondary) David Caldwell didn't reject Woody. & the Jets ( it's on his bio sheet in Jacksonville, should I go on???? Don't matter you'll just alter your positions

tsjc68

Well, after the Raiders game, we'll

A.) have Milliner back, in all likelihood

B.) possibly sign a veteran after their contracts aren't guaranteed, waiving McFadden

@levi @Brendan It's not all about sacks. They disrupt the passer with the best teams in the league. QB efficiency rating is a big factor.

Brendan
Brendan

@levi Sacks isn't the end-all, be-all and you know that.

The team also added Babin, have their young studs a year older, have Q in a more lean, more advanced form.

Acting like the pass rush is going to be identical to 2013 is probably not fair, especially when they're a young group that is still improving. Imagine if Richardson becomes a legitimate pass rush threat? Or if Babin/Barnes can keep each other fresh and fire at 1000 mph on the edge for entire games?

The pass rush will be better than last year, I didn't even know this was a debate at this stage.

Brendan
Brendan

@bobbyj At the time, Patterson was an upgrade over whoever you had slotted in the #2 spot.

Dawan's 2013 PFF grade: -1.6, Laron's grade: -1.1. Yeah, that's quite the canyonesque difference.

Matt Slauson was a MSM source and was always getting hurt. Last year? Surprise! He got hurt. He's not a world-beater, he's a solid OL. Time to move on.

Never said Garrard would start.

Rex shouldn't have been fired when Idzik was brought in.

Caldwell liked the Jets enough to interview, I don't care that he's not here, where did he win the GM awards that determined he's a great GM, btw?

My positions don't alter, you just can't remember any of them.

Bent
Bent moderator

@bobbyj

Vlad gave up zero pressures in 139 pass block snaps this preseason.  Not bad for someone who can't pass protect to save his life.

Patterson was an upgrade.  Who could have predicted him walking off the team?

Maybe Garrard would have started if he was healthy enough.  We're not doctors.

LaRon Landry is overrated.

You don't get to treat other people's opinion's as worthless based on revisionist history.  Doesn't matter you'll just alter Brendan's position and then use that against him.

@Starz31  I seem to remember a lot of long ball completions last season and those plays take time to develop.

We will see what David Caldwell accomplishes over a peroid of time. Just remember Caldwell has final say over all personell moves in Jacksonville, no boardroom like it is here with the Jets. No Woody Johnson telling him who stays or goes

Many predicted Patterson couldn't make it through a season as a starter.

bobbyj

Only problem with that statement is I'm not playing Mon mourning QB, I said those things WHILE THEY WERE HAPPENING...that's not killing someone's comments down the road, I killed them as soon as they were put out...The fact that I stand by my comments, take a ton of sh*t for them when I orginally post them. ITS CALLED ACCOUNTABILTY FOR YOUR STATEMENTS, YOU SHOULD TRY IT....

Bent
Bent moderator

@levi @Starz31 Not always, could be a lofted pass off a three step drop.  And a lot of the time they happened due to max protect which means that with better safety play you can cut down on the long passes, as they did once Reed was on the team.

tsjc68
tsjc68

@levi @Starz31

Either that, or they require an Antonio Cromartie pratfall/jersey-tug combo.

So, many people predicting a completely different reason why the move wouldn't work out (which may or may not have come to fruition) means it was wrong to suggest that a player who played well the previous year wasn't an upgrade?

Are you high??? Over 20 something teams wanted Revis, you know Rex wanted him. You actually think that Woody wasn't the one who wouldn't let him return? Idzik lacked the resume to be a GM. Idzik sat in on personell meetings with Schinder & Caldwell, him did not run them...Even Bent ( who defends you at a nausuem level ) stated that Idzik is a Mr.T type GM. He is a Woody Johsom lacky...

Brendan
Brendan

@bobbyj Bringing Revis back was never, ever, ever an option. Stop insulting me, please, none of my responses warrant that type of childish behavior.

bobbyj
bobbyj

I expect accountability from Bent the moderator, he could easily go back & see my old posts, but he won't , he'll just defend Brendan's nonscene & put me on walls of shame...Levi you agreed with me that if Woody fired Mr.T that Rex had to go. A GM should hire his own man to coach his team. Two men with the same ideology/vision, not one man going in one direction, & the other going oppisite, plus there is no accountability. If the Jets go 7-9 & Idzik cans Rex, Rex takes all the blame. Honestly if we had Revis today, you can't tell me that most of us on this site wouldn't be talking playoffs. You really believe that Rex didn't beg for Revis? You watch if it falls apart, Rex will be fed to the alligators

bobbyj
bobbyj

I stand by my comments, everything I just blasted Brendan for were either comments that I put out & Brendan destroyed, or comments that Brendan put our, & I killed. The day David Garrad was signed I stayed that he wouldn't make it thru the preseason without injuries. When the Oline coach Googs came out & stated that he wasn't the one who was playing Vlad, I killed it as more organizational dysfunction. D Landry ( compaired to his brother ) sucks. When I wrote that David Caldwell reject us I got a page worth of rips.....

bobbyj
bobbyj

You been smoking crack...only things that I said were off was that we would finish last in the AFC ( last year, & if not for the dumbest play I've almost ever seen by the Tampa player it may have happen. ) & that Rex would be fired. ( which apparently almost happen, but someone, I'm assuming Wisenhunt, because of the Rod Graves connection.rejected the Jets offer) please Bent go back & repost what I've posted do me the favor

SackDance99
SackDance99

@levi @Starz31 Sure.  Thing is that this team isn't last season's.  And, with a rookie QB, no consistent healthy receivers and awful CB play for most of the season, the Jets went 8-8.  The CB play could be worse, but don't you think that the Jets are improved over all other phases of the game?

Bent

@bobbyj "Even Bent ( who defends you at a nausuem level ) stated that Idzik is a Mr.T type GM. "

No I didn't.  I corrected you when you wrongly stated this the other day.

Brendan
Brendan

@bobbyj I think Idzik didn't want Revis here as much as Woody didn't.

And where is your proof that 20 teams wanted him? 20 teams couldn't afford his asking price, so I'd love to hear your logic on this.

"Even Bent ( who defends you at a nausuem level ) stated that Idzik is a Mr.T type GM. He is a Woody Johsom lacky..."

Bent never stated this, ever. Stop lying, you chimp.

bobbyj

If David Caldwell were here & had final day over personell Revis would be here, that is the exact reason that he rejected us. Woody makes decisions based on personel feelings, not personell decisions...

Brendan
Brendan

@John Ledo Patterson was on the team for about 15 minutes, so there wasn't much to watch.

Cro was a source for the MSM, specifically Manish. That's why he's not here anymore.

@SackDance99  I guess we will see if the rest of the team has improved enough to with stand the short coming it will see from the CBs. We are one injury away from starting a guy we signed yesterday who has "potential".

bobbyj

If it wasn't you it was Bassett, but it was definetly someone on this site, an Idzik is a money man & a mathematician, not a personell based GM. Read his old bio on the Seahawks website, it speaks for itself

Lay off the smack...the Revis thing is all Woody & we will pay for it now...I'm done you & bent can snuggle up together. Go Jets this weekend, it's a must win for us....

SackDance99

@levi @SackDance99 I suspect that if there are more injuries, the Jets will be forced to dip into the available FA pool.  Let's just hope Milliner gets healthy because Rex is real good at funneling plays towards his best cover CB.

He's not though.  He's coached (albeit at a low level) and has been involved with personnel.  Unlike Tannenbaum (finance side only) or Bradyway (scouting side only) before him.

I suggest you read it first.

John Idzik begins his sixth season with the Seahawks after joining the club on February 16, 2007. With Seattle, Idzik oversees player negotiations, the team’s compliance with the NFL salary cap, player personnel transactions, all football operations budgets, staff and team contracts, team travel and most aspects of the day-to-day football operations while also remaining active in player evaluations. In addition, he serves as the club’s primary liaison to the NFL Office and represents the club at League meetings.

He spent 11 years with the Buccaneers, first as a Pro Personnel Assistant and then was elevated to Director of Football Administration in 1996 and Assistant General Manager in 2001.

@bobbyj

You said the "the Revis thing is all Woody & we will pay for it now". This is not all entirely true. It has a lot of truth to it though. Everything today is fought over money. Owners want to be careful with how much money they give out. But everyone doesn't want to include another very IMPORTANT reason why the jets couldn't land Revis this year. See when Revis was on the jets since the day he was drafted he looked at everything from an internal point of view (within the organization), yes he had his Uncle helping him outside of the organization with his contracts and it was vital in helping him get the money he deserved. When I say internal I say here is the 22 year old, then 24 year old player wanting to put his whole career with the jets, everyday. All the players as he looked around in the lockerroom, the culture of the club was perfectly molded to his liking and had the room for growth for the players. When Revis left the jets in 2013 he was traded because he felt he didn't get the money he deserved. At the same time the lockerroom and the culture of the club was changing. This culture that Revis has looked at his entire career was not being cultivated by Rex Ryan. John Idzik didn't happen to bring this same culture either. So even if the jets pay Revis the money to come to the jets he probably would play another year in New England. Belichick has a similar culture to what the jets have and this is really all that Revis wants NOW! This is Revis 29 years old wanting to win a Superbowl and not the greedy millionaire that all jets fans have labeled him since he left New York. This is a different TIME in a football players life and he wants to go out with a championship. The jets right now don't have that and he doesn't want to spend his time and effort on sitting through Geno Smith, the struggles on defense and offense, the media hounding him, ect.

@John Ledo @Brendan Toast Part 1 was a Patterson too.

Read my BGA from that game.  Patterson gave up three catches but two of them weren't all his fault, a theory I was later able to confirm as correctly with exclusively obtained camp footage.  On the other, he slipped over.  And he was playing hurt.

If you saw Patterson play last year, he was excellent.  It happens.  Cromartie was great in 2012 and then bad the next year.  Doesn't mean Cromartie haters can now claim that he was always bad and should never have been signed.
