I don't understand why you have that Dyer rag in the daily links when there was a much better story about the same thing by Dom Cosentino.

Off-topic: Big time kudos to the Rangers players and fans.  What an exciting collection of players and style of play, with an amazing underdog spirit and a couple of inspirational stories.  Five great games.

The series reminded me of the '93 SCF (Kings-Canadiens) where heavily-favored Montreal won three OT games in a far-more-competitive-than-history-will-remember 4-1 series win.  (Or, probably more relevant to NY-based fans, the Yankees-Mets subway world series where the Yankees won 4-1 but the Mets could easily have won three of those games.)

I know the Rangers have some decisions to make on a few guys but with such an awesome goalie and the excellent McDonough, I reckon the nucleus is in place for them to get back to the finals again over the next few years.

One of the best things about hockey is that the die-hard fans always show respect to the other team even in defeat rather than complaining about luck or officiating and the Rangers' great fans have been no different.  Much respect.

Thank god Greece didn't score first, this game will now be worth watching.

The jets have reached out to Brandon Flowers, he could be coming in for a workout as early as next week. The phins are also after him.

Brandon Flowers was released by the Chiefs....any interest in him?

Offered without comment:

How the mighty have fallen. It wasn’t that long ago that Brandon Flowers’ name was mentioned in the same breath as the league’s best. In 2010 he graded out as PFF’s second best cornerback and allowed just one touchdown all season. Fast forward to 2013 and Flowers missed two games, still gave up five touchdowns, allowed 0.95 yards per snap (third worst) and his 66.7 percent pass completions allowed ranked him fifth worst in the league. The net result is that the Chiefs are reportedly looking to trade him.

In defense of Flowers, he is a special breed of shadow corner (five games) in the fact he played 50 percent of his snaps in the slot. The closest comparisons would be Kyle Arrington (seven shadow games, 55 percent slot) and William Gay (five shadow games, 43 percent slot) and both Arrington and Gay are more a product of the usage of the other cornerbacks on the roster (Talib in New England, Taylor in Pittsburgh), whereas Flowers, Kansas City’s top corner, is specifically given that role. As a result of the way he is used, Flowers sees extended playing time against smaller, faster receivers, running routes that get them open quickly. His shadow duties last season were on Dez Bryant, Cecil Shorts, DeSean Jackson and Wes Welker (twice). If Flowers sticks in K.C. for another year I’d expect a similar performance, which is a useful nugget of information for those playing daily fantasy games when speedy slot receivers play the Chiefs.

Best options for Tone:

TB (as the slot #3 behind V-Jax and Mike Evans) + Florida ties

CLE (to join the Hawkins-Burleson-Austin threesome and possibly be the #1) + Ohio State ties + Pettine ties

KC (to be the #3 or possibly #2 across from Bowe, if he can beat out Donnie Avery and AJ Jenkins) + Sutton ties

CAR (to replace Steve Smith in the slot and push one of Cotchery/Avant to #4)

HOU (to push Devier Posey back down to #4 and serve as Andre Johnson insurance)

Hard to believe a writer would put their name to the nonsense Dyer just wrote.  Sad reallly, because he knew it was wrong and kept putting little caveats about "only June" and "only OTA's" and "minor misstep".

He should still have his arse handed to him for this silly article.  Period!

Im excited to see these two young safeties (Allen, Pryor) playing this year. I think they will make a big difference in the turnover department.

Congrats to LA and Willie Mitchell!!  (runs for cover)

@Bent Watching Lundqvist at the end of the game (right after the goal) and his post-game presser was one of the saddest sports moments I've ever had. That guy did not leave one ounce of himself in the tank, he wanted this as much as anyone who has ever played.

And your outlook for the Rangers is pretty accurate. They have a young nucleus, Richards is probably their free cut (maybe he comes back on the cheap, which would be okay), but the pieces in place are young outside of St. Louis (who the Kings did a fantastic job of neutralizing) and Nash (hopefully they can find him with the disappearing act he pulled in the playoffs).

Good things still to come for this team, but damn....they basically lost three games on a coin toss. Stinks.

@Bent its sad because it was a very winable series for the Rangers

@jake100 jup, they tried to work out a trade in May as well, but Izdik said no...

Smells like due diligence. Who knows, maybe he's always loved Rex and wants to sign a below-market deal with minimal guarantees to replace Wilson as our slot CB.

@rrjm nope. He is a zone corner... He doesnt fit our defense

@tsjc68 I've always thought Carolina made the most sense.

@Dr. Jonathan Reefer I really liked Dyer a while back but it seems he has decided negative pieces are the way to go lately.

@levi Tough series. Rangers held the lead in all three games in LA, lost all three in 2 OT. The Rangers' core is young and Henrik still has enough prime years left that they can make it back, but.....damn.

@Brendan @Bent I wish I was as optimistic. I think they were a good team that got some breaks (Habs beating Boston) and went on a nice run but were ultimately outclassed by LA. When they start next season, once again they will not be in the conversation as cup contenders.

Bent

@eurojet @Bent Definitely.  None of those four losses were easy games for the Kings.

UncleJoesJetFarm

@tsjc68 He does have talent and maybe Rex can fit him into his defense some way, if anyone can do that , it is Rex.

tsjc68
tsjc68

He is a pretty damn good zone corner though. I'd take a gamble on him if he's dirt cheap, but some other team that fits his skillset better will probably give him more money than we should.

I agree.

I could see Pettine being leery of pairing Holmes with his young QBOTF, though.

@Brendan @tsjc68 They could recreate the Flight Boys, but with Kelvin Benjamin playing the Braylon role.

@Brendan @levi thats what stings the most to me...outside of that game 3 poopfest, i thought the rangers were as good as if not a bit better than the kings...certainly they weren't 4games to 1 worse.

oh well.  34 more years to go based on their usual pace.

@Brendan @levi Painful, that's for sure.   Well, still not a bad finish given their start.  I don't miss Tortorella (except for the pressers).

@Brendan  The Rangers will be fine. I got to know Willie a little when he went to Clarskon so Im happy for him. Two Stanley cups and a gold medal with Canada is a damn fine career.

@tsjc68 for the cheap I would be ok with him, but I think a team like Tenessee will throw more money at him than Izdik.

@tsjc68 @Brendan Benjamin has no hands at all. He was a high risk pick and could end up a bust

I couldn't believe how bad Dan Girardi played in this series........he turned the puck over so many times in this series and was physically inferior.

Very frustrating loss last night especially with all the chances the Rangers had.

Hopefully they beef up the back end so next year they can go all the way.

Brendan
Brendan

@levi He is one of those "in the right place" guys that you just hate if you're playing him. I was constantly left wondering how this old guy* was beating younger/faster people to pucks constantly, he just has that 6th sense for seeing things develop.

I personally like the Kings as a team, the way they play, etc. Just sucks that the Rangers outplayed them the majority of the series, but lost 4-1 anyway.

@a57se @jake100 @Bent Actually, I was waiting for a comment exactly like yours, lol, mission accomplished! Come on 57, you are slipping, you should know me by now. Bent and Brendan didn't take the bait. As you say, chum in the water, lol

Brendan
Brendan

@eurojet That doesn't mean they aren't planning for him to be a big player for him, though.

Planning and executing are different things. On paper, that's the type of player they are hoping Benjamin can be (big, downfield target that wins balls with size).

@Brendan It was a pretty good Clarkson team too. Erik Cole also played  on the team and he also won a cup with Carolina. I didnt know him though, Willie actually came and said good bye I said where ya going and he said I just signed my ticket with the NJ Devils. I shook his hand congratulated him wished him good luck. He is a good guy quite a jokester.

@levi Is Clarkson a big hockey school? Having two good NHLers at the same time like that is impressive.

@Brendan @levi Is this a football blog or a Hockey blog dagnabbit? Only kidding, nothing wrong with healthy sports convo. On that note, Go Chris Algieri tonight, 10pm HBO! He is a HUGE underdog. It is almost like a college football team vs an NFL team,  OY! Bent, Brian Rose a very good boxer from England is on the undercard. I cant wait!!!!!

"Algieri was very confident during our meeting; he stated that this training camp was the best of his career. The Long Island pugilist knows that he and his opponent are polar opposites stylistically.  Chris understands that he must assume the role of the matador and evade the brutal bull like attack of Ruslan Provodnikov. Algieri plans to use his educated jab and lightening quick combinations to not only stave off the Russian, but if the opportunity arises: put him down for good.  In addition the change of venue (originally scheduled to take place at Nassau Coliseum but moved to The Barclay's Center) to accommodate the champion's fan base, has not fazed the Huntington born boxer. "My fans will be the majority at The Barclay's, many people will commute from Long Island".

UncleJoesJetFarm

@brendan @jake100 What concerns me the most about this fight aside from the huge step up in class for Chris, is that Chris is not known for power and he is fighting a savage! I fear Chris will not be able to command respect from Ruslan, and will eventually get clipped. This cat ruslan is an Animal! You have to hit him with a baseball bat for him to even acknowledge you, OY
