Hmmm.  Consensus of Oakland media says McGloin starts if Schaub can't go.  Don't want to subject Carr to an aggressive Rex Ryan defense with an unproven OL in game one. Looking at MJD right, left and up the middle three out of four plays until they work out their issues.

Manish is really talking up Nelson - hope he's not grooming a new "unnamed" source.

What's up with Dee's recovery anyway - haven't heard much lately

Love the Jets apologists rationalizing the job the GM did at the CB position. :)

It's okay to look the monster in the eye and smile

Denial solves nothing

We can only hope they run a lot, but I doubt that's an optimal plan against this defense.

Brendan

@jaygo McGloin is probably the best QB on that roster right now.

I think Nelson is too classy &/or media-savvy for that. I read his AMA on reddit, & he did a very good job of saying "the right thing" & came off as a nice guy more than an outright "phony" imo.

Plus, I believe he's a FA at the end of the year & idk how likely it is he returns.

Size of league ? PPR or Standard league? I would take Peterson 2nd round get A brown and 3rd D Martin if he available. Of course it all depends on size of league .

@bradysucks you've made this same comment in the last thread.... and the one before that..... and the one before that....... and the one before that. Give it up already

bonozoffa
bonozoffa

This whole comment thread wreaks of second guesses fueled by a "what if" angle taken by the likes of Mehta, Cimini, and the multitude of beat hacks at the Post. But since they are playing that game, so will I. What if the jets signed Revis, DRC, Verner - or heck, all of them - and they didn't draft McD and sign the other CBs they did, and one of those CBs sprained their ankle and was out for a longer period of time or blew out their knee and was lost for the season? Would Idzik be to blame then? Or Rex, for wanting those big name corners? It never ends....

@bradysucks it's not denial; it's more like law of averages.  No doubt it is the weakest link at the moment, but players step up.  Obsessive media lends to impression that things are bad; I am just saying that things are not necessarily as bad as they've been reported to be.  We will see very soon.

levi

@bradysucks I think its all just a matter of opinion. For instance I fine with Idziks approach but the injuries (and Patterson) killed his plan. Others wanted him to sign a high priced CB in free agency which is fine thats their opinion but its not Idziks.

Also he could have signed a high priced CB that could of tore his acl in preseason too and were still in the same boat. Cant predict injuries.

@bradysucks

Nor does endless hand-wringing, deciding all is lost before a game's been played or the need to find a scapegoat to bash (miss Hill yet?)

@NYCPEinGermany He's going to be really fun to watch, can't wait to see him flying off the edge on a blitz on Sunday.

@levi @jaygo Just reporting what I read.  After 4-12, they're taking it slow and not putting future assets in harms way.

@Disgruntled Jets Fan I was watching a re airing of the last Raiders game on local TV, and the announcers kept mentioning over and over that the Raiders really don't hav #2-6 receivers.

hitchhiker

A parking cone? Idk but supposedly the new guy is better in the slot than outside.

hitchhiker

It would seem there is some thought behind them as the team lists 3 RBs as RB #1, but I agree they are not definitive.

hitchhiker

5th behind Wilson might mean 4th outside, but format limits that.

Edit 4th outside

NYCPEinGermany

really? Damn, I hadn't heard that it was definite.

edit: or near-definite

williamg1

@levi All in all, we only lost 1 player to season-ending injury. Even if Dee were 100%, we're still hurting at CB. That's what happens when Idzik put his eggs in the Patterson basket. Expecting a guy who is never healthy to be a starter for 16 games was one hell of a gamble.

NYCPEinGermany
NYCPEinGermany

@levi @bradysucks

I just think he didn't see any of the FA CBs being worth what they were asking (except for revis, who is a shltstorm for completely other reasons) and thought it made bad financial sense to throw money at overpriced guys when there are lots of young studs to sign very soon.

His approach made good sense, but between the injuries and one player turning psycho, he's being second-guessed. In a league with a 100% injury rate, every team has injury woes and depleted position groups - the good teams find a way around it.

Stop being a bozo. Idzik screwed Rex and if things work out it is because of Rex

GM is supposed to make the coach's job easier (not harder)

@jaygo  I like it. Although I wanted to see Rex send the house on the rookie and rattle him early and often.

Ok well take McCoy or Charles can't miss on any of the 3.

Disgruntled Jets Fan

Like most things, it's a combination of factors. The Jets got unlucky with losing both Patterson and Dex to unpredictable events (particularly in Patterson's case) so you cannot expect the CB unit to weather those losses without weakening. But it's also true that Idzik took too much risk at the position, too.

All that said, I may be in a minority, but I think Walls and Lankster are perfectly serviceable for now.

levi
levi

@williamg1  As Brendan said I expected Mcdougal would take over the starting position during the season if not in game one. I dont think he was ready to start game one but neither was Milliner last year.

Brendan
Brendan

@williamg1 You're assuming that was the plan, I'm willing to bet they were hoping one of the young guys (probably Dex) would step up at some point in the season. Patterson was a one-year placeholder.

williamg1
williamg1

@NYCPEinGermany @levi @bradysucks

Who was overpriced? Verner got like $6M a year. DRC not much more. Sure, Vontae Davis got more than $9M, but he was ranked as the #3 CB by PFF last year.

The CBs came cheap in FA.

NYCPEinGermany
NYCPEinGermany

@bradysucks

the crazy train is about to make a stop - wanna get off?

BTW, take a look at my avatar, you don't need to champion Rex to me. I'm not apologizing for anything, except for looking forward to the season and not throwing my hands up in disgust before a down has even been played.

levi
levi

@bradysucks Oh ok. The GM intentionally screwed his HC that the owner and players love. And NYCPE is the Bozo huh?

Brendan

@a57se It's a post about a Jets first round rookie who has had a great preseason, that's all.

jaygo

@levi @jaygo They're worried sick about their OL and lack of depth at WR.  Sounds like a good match-up for us week one.

williamg1
williamg1

@levi @williamg1

Remember the struggles Dee (1st round pick) went through last year? You expected the 3rd rounder to come in and play day 1, even as he hadn't played football the season before?

williamg1
williamg1

@Brendan @williamg1

Hoping a rookie 3rd rd CB (who didn't play the year before) can start at #2 CB, is an even bigger gamble.

jaygo
jaygo

@Brendan @williamg1 I'm willing to bet they were and are expecting the DL to step up.  Best CBs in the league eventually get beat if there is no pressure on the QB and spotty CBs look good when the QB is hurried.  Why put big dollars into CBs in today's NFL?  Makes little sense.

NYCPEinGermany
NYCPEinGermany

@williamg1

It's cheap if they play well, it's expensive if they suck.

Perhaps Idzik & co didn't those guys would play much better than patterson & dex, who are unfortunately now both out of the picture (unfortunate that patterson turned out to be a flake)

With those guys at the top I don't try to get cute. There is little studly rb depth so i like to get one early. I got Julio Jones at #20 so I'm pretty happy.

dgdg

@williamg1 @levi No, Patterson was a bridge to Dougle.  Rex moved his second best DB, Allen, to corner to compensate.  A patch.  Will it work?  We will see.

Brendan
Brendan

@williamg1 No, not "day 1." I said eventually, meaning some point midseason.

Brendan

@williamg1 Is it, though? He was already playing well in camp, and the team has already shown it's willing to live through growing pains.

@bradysucks You are becoming a troll whether you realize it or not. You come here and post negativity day after day then when you get the reaction you are looking for you start name calling. Well, it is what it is. Hopefully someone can step up and be a permanent answer at CB.

Or else: we'll get stuck dedicating a high draft pick or big FA dollars to CB next offseason.

williamg1

@Brendan @williamg1

Yes, of course it is. Heading into camp, no one knew what to expect of him. Especially as they said they were going to bring him along slow because he was rehabbing.

Levi

I think the Jets did a lot of positive things so it isn't all negative

I will always point out blatant stupidity and only a biased NFL fan with no wits will deny that the Jets are in a bad position at CB because Idzik is inexperienced. The guy doesn't know the difference between Verner, Talib, Revis etc and Patterson/McDougal

levi
levi

@bradysucks Since you like to point out blatant stupidity let me do the same for you. You thinking Idzik doesnt know the difference between Revis and Patterson is blatantly stupid.

levi

@Brendan  Hey Walls took a while to develop but he is playing some good ball now.

bradysucks

So Idzik DOES know the difference?

Truly scary

levi

@bradysucks Id bet he does. As I said before he has a different approach than you and many others would have and thats fine. difference is he actually gets to make the calls and gets paid to do it too.

I want to WIN

Brendan
Brendan

@bradysucks I want to win more than once or twice a decade. Your model for success is what Tanny did.

bradysucks
bradysucks

Not true Brendan

Tanny traded away all his draft picks and traded up for guys like Hill

I never suggested Idzik trade away all his picks. I suggest spending money when it makes sense. The goal is to put the best team on the field every year. Idzik had a ton of $$$ and he got cute and cheap. He made a terrible and foolish mistake not signing a proven free agent CB and simultaneously drafting Dex McDougal as a SHORT TERM fix.

If the plan was to draft Dex then you sign a proven CB in free agency. If the plan was not to sign a good CB in free agency then you don't use all 12 draft picks and you get a CB better than Dex McDougal as your solution or draft 2 CB's in the first 4 rounds

Brendan
Brendan

@bradysucks He didn't get cute and cheap. He was thisclose to signing Davis, but Irsay trumped the Jets' offer, which was reportedly leading at the time. DRC even said he really contemplated signing with the Jets, even though the offer was less. You're acting like he didn't try, Patterson was plan D or E or beyond. The team is in a long-term roster build, Dex's injury has thrown a wrench into that plan, but to panic and sign a CB and deviate from the plan would likely lead to someone like Ellis or, worse, Kerley/Harrison not being re-signed after this season.

bradysucks
bradysucks

@Brendan @bradysucks

The team is ready to make a super bowl run with an elite defense if Idzik upgraded the back end with a Revis, Talib, Werner etc...

Do that and you have potentially a top 3 defense complimented by a top 5 running game

What happened Brendan the last time Rex had that?????

Brendan
Brendan

@bradysucks You seriously think this team is just a good CB away from a SB run?

bradysucks
bradysucks

@Brendan @bradysucks

Yes...

Pryor, Millner, Revis (Talib, Verner etc), Allen would be an elite secondary

The d-line is elite - The LB's could be elite with a great secondary behind them and a great d-line in front of them

Running game with Chris Johnson/ Ivory etc is very very good - possibly top 5

Rex Ryan with a top 5 running game and top 5 defense is PROVEN in the NFL and he did it with suckiest QB EVER - Sanchez

I 100% think Rex can win a SB with a top 5 running game and a top 5 defense and somebody other than the buttfumble at QB

levi
levi

@bradysucks Im not even sure if the team has its future QB on the roster yet let alone being a CB away from the SB. If you truly believe that its no wonder you are on here bltchin every day.

bradysucks
bradysucks

@levi @bradysucks

Bears went  to a SB with Rex Grossman and Ravens won a SB with Trent Dilfer

A top 5 running game and a top 5 defense gets you deep in the playoffs...

Look at the 49ers and Seahawks - neither of them are known for the passing game....

Idzik should know this.....He F'd up huge
