Morning Gangrels. The Farm will make this simple. No playoffs, but a winning record, Rex has less than a  50% chance of being retained.  If the Jets make the playoffs, he stays on as HC. 8-8 or less, bye bye.

Woody made it clear with his phrase about "no more patience." That says it all. To be honest, I think if we don't make the playoffs, the Jets will have a new HC in 2015 regardless of the development and potential of the team. It would be going on 5 years without making the playoffs, and it cant be blamed on having a rookie QB or an offense with no weapons. It is time for Rex to get the team into the post season. You can tell Woody is about to boil over after all these years with no pot season, as his patience is at the end. The Farm has spoken.

Rex wont be fired he took over Mr. T and Manginas teams and went to two AFC title games with a rookie QB then he has an 8-8 and 6-10 season really while were re-tooling. Idzik comes in and hes not an idiot jst because the media says when a gm goes the coach must go he didnt buy into that and he took the job knowing that he had a nice foundation here and a great defensive mind for a head coach. We go 8-8 and with a qb who played dreadful most of the time  but had his moments but we rebuilt on the fly the last two off seasons with Idzik. Jets will be in the playoffs and Rex will be the coach for many more years. Idzik, Rex, and Marty will be together for a good amount of time and will have success but G has so much to do with this years Success.

Hmmm will Johnson also advise Josh Gordon to keep on partying?

GO BROWNS!!

Why all the "Rex on the hot seat" articles?  He just got an extension, let's let him play a few games before we try to fire him.

marcus81
marcus81

@Kirk Michael  Rex would not survive a 7-9 season and stay on as the coach, but the team he's got he should be at least 9-7 this upcoming season if not better, Mangini was 9-7 before Rex took over, that was a very good team Rex inherited, Jenkins and Washington haven't even been replaced since then, although both players where the best in the league at what they did, best NT and best RB all purpose yards from scrimmage

Pretty close to the last hurrah for Federer.

levi

@Brendan No, watching the cat lick his balls holds my attention longer than tennis. (except for that hot chic who moans and grunts)

@Eddy Lopez There isn't anything to report on the Jets before camp. The next three weeks is one big void.

Be happy people are talking about the Browns' circus. Maybe the Jets will get a reprieve this year.

williamg1
williamg1

@levi Manziel heard Gordan got arrested for DWI, and has decided he must -- MUST -- party with him immediately.

I want Pettine to have the world's biggest headache.

williamg1
williamg1

@jsadolph This could have been avoided if Idzik had just given him a real extension.

Brendan
Brendan

@jsadolph Because someone has to be on the hot seat and Rex is an easy target. Missed the playoffs three years running, "new" GM.

I think most people with a clue think that Rex just needs a good year. Growth from the young players and improvement from the defense. Does 8 wins get him fired? Maybe. But 9/10 wins probably keeps his job and a playoff birth ensures he's definitely not going anywhere.

I wouldn't say his seat is hot, but it's not cool, either. He's got to perform this year.

a57se
a57se

@marcus81

This team has the worst collection of talent in the division so either the AFC East is stacked or we're not as good as you think.

Brendan
Brendan

@levi You're missing out. Entering a 5th set, and some of the shots in the last one were unbelievable despite how exhausted these guys must be.

Brendan
Brendan

@williamg1 And it is a Jets player who they're quoting, to be fair.

levi
levi

@williamg1  Pettine wont even have to leak any info its all gonna be right in the police blotter.

Brendan
Brendan

@williamg1 To be fair, we don't know exactly what the extension was. We know that there are incentives tied to performance/playoffs, but we don't know how much of his salary is tied up in those, how much is guaranteed, etc.

It's entirely possible that it's still costly to fire him.

Kirk Michael
Kirk Michael

@Brendan @jsadolph the players have to preform. G has to step up and everyone else has to live up to there hype

marcus81
marcus81

@a57se @marcus81  Jets have built up the teams talent level, the D line is set for a few years at least, if the Safety and CB's drafted play well enough, and the O line holds their own and Geno plays nice and steady without turning the ball over, they could give the Pats a run for the division, Dolphins could be better than expected though, and Bills are the Bills.

Brendan
Brendan

@Hanknaples They're in the 5th set, Hank, which means they've split the first four. What are you talking about?

levi
levi

@Brendan I actually turned my tv off for the summer. I will turn it back on for football but I got sick of paying a bill when I might watch an hour a month. I go to a friends or the bar if there is something I really want to see.

Im thinking of going to a game this year and wondering if a preseason one would be worthwhile to go see or should I do regular season. I assume preseason is cheaper and more relaxed and I could probably get good seats?

harold
harold

Great matck Novak pulled it out.

__fense
__fense

@levi @Brendan Last I checked tickets to the first preseason game were starting at $4.

Brendan
Brendan

@levi It's certainly cheaper to do a preseason game, but you'd still be spending $ to come all the way down, but the difference would pretty much be all on the game ticket. Other stuff isn't reduced in price (concessions, etc.). Honestly, I think it's worth it to see the real thing, but that's me. Depending on how big of a crowd you're going to bring, I can see how multiple game tickets can start adding up.

Brendan
Brendan

@williamg1 It made it so he's not a lame duck coach this year and the team can keep him beyond that if they want. It's a multi-year extension with an out clause, basically.

Brendan
Brendan

@__fense Haha yeah I saw that. My point is if levi were to make a weekend out of it or whatever, the extra money to get real game tickets for he and his son is probably worth it. A full stadium doing the chant and all the tailgating and stuff is worth seeing if you're a fan who isn't close enough to get to games regularly.

levi
levi

@Brendan  Ok thanks, Im just trying to gather some info. It would be just my son and I going. Im thinking it will get pricey anyway because its not just the game. We will see the sights and sample many foods in NYC when we go since weve never been.

levi
levi

@williamg1  Rex believes in himself so I could see why he accepted the deal. He also knows it will motivate his players to get him a big payday/ extension much like he does for his players by bragging them up.

Brendan
Brendan

@williamg1 I think that was fair for all parties involved.

It ensured Rex would get more than the one transition year to prove his worth to his new boss. I think it's fair to assume he's won over Idzik at this point. So, if he does decently-or-better this year, it's a moot point. If he sucks, he'd probably be fired anyway.

I don't think it changes anything, if Rex made it through 2013 (and many of us were confident he would), 2014 was going to be what ultimately decides his fate.

levi
levi

@Hanknaples what kind of dog and pony show is Pettine running there in Cleveland Hank?

Brendan
Brendan

@Hanknaples "Do you realize Willie that Rexy owes his Job to the 'Phins OC on the LAST game...or else he would be someone's DC???"

Rex was told before the game against Miami that they were keeping him on as head coach. Try again, Hankenstein.

williamg1
williamg1

@levi @williamg1 But does Rex believe in Geno. To me, the season is all about Geno. If Geno sucks, the Jets will suck, and then Rex is certainly on the hot seat.

Brendan
Brendan

@williamg1 That's why they have Vick, though. Rex can turn and go "oh, hey, a real NFL QB is on our team? Hey, why don't you go play QB and keep me from getting fired."

Hopefully it doesn't come to that, though.

levi
levi

@Hanknaples You may be right. After all, he was trained by the best.

But he better get a hold of the reins on that team or it could be over before it begins.

levi
levi

@Brendan @williamg1   Yeah, if he stinks though its a matter of how long they let him stink it up for. When do you give Geno the hook and still give him a ligit shot without tanking the season? I mean he does need play time to improve.

Brendan
Brendan

@levi I like how Hank can talk about the 2012 Jets' defense as if it were the Steel Curtain when it's Pettine we're discussing, but when it's Rex it's an unmitigated failure and should have resulted in Rex losing his job (probably so the team could hire Pettine the latest resident SUPERGENIUS that the Jets unfairly held back).

__fense
__fense

@Brendan @Hanknaples To be fair, they were eliminated from contention Monday of week 15. Once the Ravens won against the Lions the best we could do was tie them, and they had the tiebreaker.

Brendan
Brendan

@levi The team is ready to win. They reloaded all over the roster, so I don't think Geno will have a very long leash. Two games, three, tops. If he stinks it up then you gotta go to Vick to salvage the year, I think.

levi
levi

@Brendan  If only they would hire Mangini as the GM. There would be no stopping them.

Brendan
Brendan

@__fense Oh, that's right, I was remembering "they're still alive" after losing to Carolina, but that was before the MNF game. Good call. And Hank's still wrong, so that's fun too.

Brendan
Brendan

@levi Yeah, Pettine's dad is one of the best/winningest high school coaches in Pennsylvania history. Multiple state titles and an obviously stellar record in 30-something years.

Brendan
Brendan

@levi Mangini is such a great defensive coach that he's now grown bored with that side of the ball and has moved to offense.

levi
levi

@Hanknaples  who will have the better record Hank the Jets, Browns or Dolphins?

levi
levi

@Brendan  I wonder why he never moved on to college...

levi
levi

@Hanknaples  Haha the only thing left to do would be to clear space in Canton for them.

Brendan
Brendan

@Hanknaples Yes, let's take a guy who has never done anything with the personnel side of things and make him into a GM and bring back a mediocre-at-best HC who failed the first time around.

Yes. Unbeatable.

Go to a Browns blog with that nonsense, please.

Brendan
Brendan

@levi (My prediction of Hank's rankings)

Phins > Browns > Jets

Brendan
Brendan

@levi My HS coach moved on from HS to college. Within 3 years he was back at my HS coaching the team again. It's a very different dynamic and some coaches are much bigger fans of teaching kids over dealing with the college stuff.

Brendan
Brendan

@Hanknaples You sad simpleton.

Rex is still a head coach, Mangini isn't and likely never will be again. Deal with it.

a57se
a57se

@levi @Hanknaples

I should of known Brendan was on the loose again with all these posts!

Why do you keep trying to straighten him out Hank? You're wasting your time!

Brendan
Brendan

@Hanknaples I don't claim to be a draft expert, Hank. I am one of the leading experts on Hankezian behavior, though.

So what's your answer? Did I get it right with Phins>Browns>Jets?

Brendan
Brendan

@Hanknaples No? I said it's unlikely he ever gets another head coaching job in the NFL, which I still stand by, but I assumed he'd eventually get a job somewhere.

To be completely honest, I think he's missing his calling as a college head coach. He is THE MAN in that situation, he picks the groceries and runs the whole show. I think that type of situation would benefit him better than trying to work his way back up the coaching ladder in hopes he convinces a team to make him the HC.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se You're enabling a crazy person. Stop acting like what he's saying makes any sense, please.

a57se
a57se

@Hanknaples

Hankie, you keep thinking for yourself bud, I may not agree with much of what you say but at least you are original and provoke thought!

Much better than the Happy Meal crew...

(kudos to Spent for the Happy meals line)

a57se
a57se

@Hanknaples

Imagine spending all that time and coming up with NOTHING!!

Sad...

Brendan
Brendan

@Hanknaples tsjc has never claimed to know everything. He puts a ton of work into scouting players and ranking them, which should be applauded not chided. Whether or not he got it right, he did more work than either of us, and pretty much anyone else who posts here. It was fun to debate and talk about and I hope he does it again next year (although I wouldn't blame him if he doesn't).

Get over yourself, please, for the good of the blog.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se Yes, keep talking up the Dolphins, Browns and Bucs while bashing the Jets relentlessly, on a Jets blog run by Jets fans, because it's so "original" (code for trolling).

It's much better than people who want to reasonably discuss the team.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se How is that sad?

Hank didn't even submit a list for the contest so he has no right to call out others that did.

a57se
a57se

@Hanknaples @a57se

The one GOOD thing about Idzik is he has gotten Rex to tone down the ringmaster act.

a57se
a57se

@Hanknaples @a57se

Woody has been a better owner than Leon Hess ever was so I will give him that much credit but his choices for GM's has been lackluster at best.

Idzik is a mix Tannenbaum and Mangini to me.

Brendan
Brendan

@Hanknaples Replacing Chad Pennington with Brett Favre wasn't kicking Jets fans in the nuts.

You chose to root for the Jets' biggest historical rival. The Jets didn't force you to do that, you did that. You're a Dolphins fan who still calls himself a Jet fan for purposes of criticizing the team here.

a57se
a57se

@Hanknaples @a57se

Hank, just like congress won't ever vote to change the way they do business or change the ridiculous perks they get, Woody won't sell the team because he isn't a good owner...it is his toy and until he tires of it, we're stuck.

Brendan
Brendan

@Hanknaples The Jets are 113-111 since Woody took over, 6-5 in the playoffs.

a57se
a57se

@Hanknaples

Notice how the Happy Meal crew like to slice and dice the history of the team to suit there rosy picture?

What a joke!

Brendan
Brendan

@Hanknaples No, I remember, which makes it all the more embarrassing that you quit on the team over one player.

Brendan
Brendan

@Hanknaples It boggles the mind that you think people suck up to anyone associated with the Jets. They do the exact opposite in most cases.

a57se
a57se

@Hanknaples

Hank, the Front Office work for Woody...they are not going to rock the boat.

The fans, well most are sheep.

Brendan
Brendan

@Hanknaples It's more than the Browns, Dolphins and Billdos can claim. By about a million miles.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se Yes, how dare I give context to the discussion about how the team has done since Woody bought it, that makes no sense!

You're a joke for feeding into this nonsense.

a57se
a57se

@Hanknaples

That move was typical of the short sightedness Woody has shown at times.

Instead of spending the draft resources to actually find a decent QB we rode Penningtons' Noodle arm then in desperation, as you point out to sell PSL's, we brought in a relic who was just using us to get out of GB and to  Minnesota.

Brendan
Brendan

@Hanknaples It was done because Favre is a proven winner and Pennington wasn't. Woody knows the best way to fill the stadium is with a winning team, that's why he let Tanny go through with it. We knew where Pennington could take the team, but we didn't know where Favre could.

a57se
a57se

@Hanknaples @a57se

Well, I think he hires guys he likes...I don't think being a 'suck-up' is part of the job description.

a57se
a57se

@Hanknaples

Dolphins: Second only to the Cowboys with a .567 winning percentage All-Time.

NY Jets: 25th in  winning percentage All-Time at .460

I think Hank is right on this one.

Brendan
Brendan

@Hanknaples We're comparing histories since Woody took over, because that's the topic you chose to inaccurately bash the team for.

Since Woody took over, the Jets have been more successful than the teams you mentioned. In the case of the Billdos and Browns, it's not even close. They have combined for one trip to the playoffs between them. That's one trip in 28 seasons, Hank.

Miami is 107-117 and 1-3 in the playoffs, but they have the two division titles in that time (the Jets only have 1).

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se "Instead of spending the draft resources to actually find a decent QB"

Kind of like Kellen Clemens in the 2nd round in 2006? And they drafted Mark Sanchez the year after.

So how exactly have they not appropriated draft resources to trying to find a long-term QB solution?

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se He hired a firm to pick his GM candidate, and they recommended Idzik. Good call, guys, really well researched points you're making.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se Dallas Cowboys since 2000: 103-121, two division titles, 1-4 in four playoff trips.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se That has a lot to do with Woody, good call. Or you can take the numbers that I posted, the numbers since Woody took over the Jets, and use them in association with the "how does Woody stack up as an owner compared to Hank's actual favorite teams" discussion.

Brendan
Brendan

@Hanknaples His arm wasn't hurt when the season started.

And they traded a 3rd round pick to try and make a run with a good team. Does the team do better with Pennington? Maybe, but would he have stayed healthy? That's a coin flip in its own right.

a57se
a57se

@Hanknaples

Yup. It was exciting having him as QB but it was a short-sighted move that left us with little at QB for 2009 and led to the Sanchez debacle.

a57se
a57se

@Hanknaples

That was Dusty Springfield! Loved her....great voice and singer!

Brendan
Brendan

@Hanknaples So you think Chad Pennington is more of a winning QB than Brett Favre? Is that what I'm supposed to take from this?

a57se
a57se

@Hanknaples @a57se

The real issue was the 2005 draft Hank.

We could have stayed at 26 and made the same trade the Raiders did with Seattle to get in front of GB and Draft Aaron Rodgers as Penningtons' successor. Instead we decided we needed a TE who had caught all of 27 balls the season before and was injured.

Pure stupidity by Bradway and then he tops it off by drafting Nugent in the 2nd round!!!

Brendan
Brendan

@Hanknaples This is all because you think if they kept Pennington then they make the playoffs and that keeps Mangini on as HC, isn't it?

It would've been lovely if Pennington stayed and they made the playoffs, but another first round exit would've done what? Apparently anything besides a SB is a failure, or at least that's the bar you hold Rex to.
