DeSean Jackson: Who’s shopping whom?

There’s been a lot of speculation about teams inquiring about DeSean Jackson’s potential to be traded from the Philadelphia Eagles.  The Jets have been among the names rumored to have expressed some unknown level of interest.

While it seems more and more likely that Jackson has played his last down in Philly, Chip Kelly reached out Jackson to tell him he wants the receiver to be a major part of his offense in 2014.  That may be, but according to this Charlotte Observer article, the Eagles are the ones gauging interest from other teams.

The Carolina Panthers were among the teams the Philadelphia Eagles informally reached out to in order to gauge their interest in a possible trade for wide receiver DeSean Jackson, a league source told the Observer.

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

This won’t be a Percy Harvin situation all over again, but one would have to think that the asking price for DeSean Jackson could be a bit pricey.  In addition to any draft picks to grab Jackson, the receiver is reported to want a new contract.

Last year the Jets were reportedly interested in WR Tavon Austin, a player they missed by one pick.  This year the team has put out feelers on players like Emmanuel Sanders and Andrew Hawkins.  The former a poor man’s and the latter a destitute man’s version of DeSean Jackson.  The Jets have an interest in filling that role and have been unsuccessful thus far in doing so.

Why is it important?  Marty Mornhinweg is always lumped in as being a West Coast Offense advocate, which generally people consider as short passing almost exclusively.  While that might have been true 20 years ago, the modern NFL WCO involves using deep balls to stretch defenses and take advantage of over-aggressive coverage schemes.  A deep threat who can get behind (and hopefully get lost among) an overaggressive or even zone defense is invaluable to a play caller like Mornhinweg.  Stephen Hill was drafted to be such a player, but has not turned out to be so.

The question of course is can Geno Smith find that open deep man?  As this post by Bent demonstrates, while Hill struggles, it wasn’t all his fault.  To get a player like DeSean, the Jets will need a quarterback who can take advantage of such a player.

I like that the Jets are inquiring and think it would be a good fit for the team, but at the same time I also would be very surprised if the Jets made a move as bold as this.

Look we go after the diva receiver D jax with a fourth round pick,use him for the year as a rental see how he fits in n.y!! Also go after Chris 2yk Johnson in a trade and retain Chris's ivory our offense instantly is a huge problem to the the NFL. Draft best player available in first round wether it be wr/cb preferably wr believe highly in Rex baby he could dam near alway put a defense out there to compete. After settle in with the wr/cb situation resolve attack the line if we still have our third round pick. But to be honest D jax can fit in well in n.y just depending on the crowd he chooses to mingle with!! He looks up to JAY Z a lot Would be nice if Jay z or Puffy could even be a mentor or have a nice sit down with this kid, and explain to him how to handle being young rich and successful. even work out some record label deal perhaps! Lol but mainly Concentrate on your business which is football.

Geno was the most or at least top 5 accurate QB on the deep pass(20 plus yards) that is easily the best part of his game now imagine if his deep threat was desean who can you know catch consistently and get open consistently. Or at the very least we know Vick can hit desean deep.

Jackson would fit perfect on the Jets. The guy is a solid player, but he is a bit overrated. The Jets have a good, shifty slot WR in Jeremy Kerley; they need a guy who can move the chains & go across the middle. Jackson isn't that guy at all. Jackson is a HR or bust type player & he is absolutely petrified to go over the middle of the field despite all the rules protecting WRs. Most importantly, the guy is a cancer in the locker room & he is a problem player. Didn't the Jets learn their lesson with Holmes? The Jets took production over character with Holmes & he almost singlehandedly tore apart the locker room with his crap attitude & me-first approach. Take Holmes' attitude problem, multiply is by 10 & that is what you get with Desean Jackson. Players coming off a season like Jackson's 2013 don't become available unless there is either a problem with the player or a problem with the contract. Jackson just got paid, and he is getting paid a lot, so he has no contract issue. The problem is with Jackson. He is known to have a crap attitude on the field when things don't go his way & he is known to take long stretches off. He also has some serious off the field issues. He mobs around with an entourage filled with known criminals. They're all part of Jackson's "record label" JACCPOT Records (LOL!). Jackson thinks he's a thug, plain & simple. If you put him in a city like New York, that attitude is going to get infinitely worse until something happens. Given his recent actions, something is bound to happen. Jackson recently made a police report where he had $325k & 2 handguns stolen from his house. It sucks he was a victim of a crime, but has he never heard of a bank or a gun safe? It's not normal behavior for someone to have that amount of money laying around the house, and it becomes even more abnormal when there are two handguns around as well. Professional athlete or not, when you hear about a house with $325k in cash & two handguns, one immediately thinks about drug & gang activity. It's not a far stretch given the crew he hangs with. This dude should have learned from Aaron Hernandez & teams who have executives with a half of a brain will steer far clear of players who have red flags like that. Jackson isn't a cop, he's not a thug, he's a diminutive WR & there is no need to have two handguns in his home in such an accessible area that a robber can just come in & find them. If the idiot used a bank to deposit some of his money then there wouldn't be a need for him to be strapped at home. I know using a bank isn't as gangster as hiding it under the mattress or hiding it in a wall, but it is smarter & safer. This guy is extremely close to going down the wrong road & leaving his team with a huge headache & public relations problem. The Eagles are smart to move him, but the Jets would be extremely stupid to pick him up. Let him go to Cleveland or Jacksonville & be a thug there. The allure of NY would send Jackson over the edge & there will be problems if he comes here.

Go get Djax, Idzik!

I'm not really worried about his "attitude", but I would be interested to see how Djax stacks up against the top WR receiver talent in this year's draft. Is he really that much better than the potential of anyone Idzik could get with the first round pick? This seems like it's going to be too a rich a draft (especially at WR) to sacrifice high picks (even a fourth) on a player that is going to have such a large contract that he'll have to be cut in a year or two, like some other notable free agents we've seen come an go. It may be old fashioned and conservative, but I'd rather see this team built for the long term through the draft -- like the Packers. I feel confident that Idzik showed last year, he knows how to draft quality talent.

Philly wants a 3rd for DJax is what I'm hearing. How about swap 1st round picks (18 and 22) and give them one of our two 4th round picks. We can sign him to a new deal with a signing bonus. We still have a pick every round and fill a need.

Are the Texans still gonna cut that CB

Jackson is a game changer.  add in ebron and this team may actually have an offense.

Paul Samuels

This is a good signing, but now the Jets really need to pursue a trade for a CB.

Was anyone expecting Vick to the Jets not to happen? I don't think so.  Nobody saw the Jackson thing happening, if it does.

Vick gonna show geno how to use his legs better Vick not starting Geno just needed someone like him who run and throws for real competition

Don't see that Vick is the automatic starter---we do not know what Geno is bringing to the table in his second year. He was learning a lot of things last year as a rookie. Think he will be able to concentrate more on the physical aspects of being a QB in the NFL.

bradysucks

Morninweg said it perfectly. Vick will push Geno to be the best he can possibly be. Agree with this

Tequila Joe

if Jets trade for DJax let's be assured they envision Vick as the starter...

Kyle Suta

I don't really care that the jets signed Vick. To be honest I don't see him playing at all this season. Also I'm conflicted on Jackson. I know he would be a great addition and I would be willing to put aside my questions about his personality. The only thing is I know idzik won't do it, unless Marty bangs the table and assures him he won't be the next tone.

I guess there will be a lot of tickets on StubHub now that people swore they were giving up there seats once Vick signed.

Tequila Joe

They should have signed one of the top corners or at least brought back Cro. It would be crazy if our offense ends up being the better unit because we don't have another viable starting corner. Right now it's our achilles heel. They need to team Milliner up with a quality starter. I don't know Joseph's (texans) cap number but maybe Idzik should inquire about him.

If we trade for desean we can draft a CB and a starting CB is going to cost more in a trade than desean

@bradysucks

I agree with you Brady. We should keep Sanchez and kick Geno and Vick out. and trade for Josh Freeman....

cbiscuit

1) Vick is a better QB today, who starts will depend on how Geno responds and his development between now and the season opener.

2) Yes, I think w Idzik this will be a legit competition.  He was brought in because he will not bend to pressures from the media or fan base.

jenkins
jenkins

@Matthew Orchant  1)we don't know. Did anybody think Fales was better than vick at this time a year ago?

2) I hope so.

bobbyj

We just signed Vick & cut Sanchez...but were rebuilding right? Suckers......

@twin this ends my 54 year relationship with the nyj's.  vick is indeed a vile and despicable excuse for a human being and should have been banned for life from the nfl.

Monty
Monty

@twin actually you should save that for a desean get.. getting Vick isnt really a big deal. I would trade vick for vontae davis right now

but lets say he gets desean..I will say Good job Idzik.but the team is still week at wideout corner tight end safety and guard.

 so I say yay you cut a 27 year old qb who had a season with 26 tds

for a 35 year old whos best season is 21 tds.

 Vick is probably better.so its a minor upgrade. that doesnt make idzik a good gm yet i dont think.

@bklyndude  Mine will be there and I have pretty good seats. (Although I gotta keep one game to boo this 4$$hole as he comes out of the tunnel)

Vick has to beat him out first. The best guy will play.

Tequila Joe
Tequila Joe

@jenkins @Tequila Joe  if they brought him in to be the starter I believe they would have just said it. Why be around the bush? If they trade for  DJax I think that would let the trade do the talking. They will probably not say it but I think they will be leaning in Vick's direction hoping he beats out Geno. Geno can then sit back observe and learn which is what he probably should be doing anyway.

I would love to see Geno  do well. however most of all I want the Jets to do well.

@Tequila Joe @bob        I agree this kid Pryor is gonna be a good one.  I think Dennard is more of a need for the Jets and seems like a perfect fit.  What types of injuries did he have to deal with ?

bob

@Tequila Joe @bob

He a safety right a home town Jersey boy I think.

That's what I like about the blog people are smart.

Tequila Joe

@bob  Anyway I think we should draft Calvin Pryor. This kid has a probowl in his future. He'll be the Jets' Earl Thomas.

Tequila Joe

@bob @Tequila Joe  I don't know it's scary. Check it out...Milliner had a number of surgeries but never missed time. This kid missed time I believe every year in college.

@Tequila Joe  He may be still growing into his body I'm sure a year of strength and conditioning would help.

@brendan @bob

Would be nice to see a corner get up and play press coverage and who also likes to play man on man coverage. Cro didn't like to press yet he had all the skills to develop that.

@Brendan @bob  Dennard gets hurt too much otherwise I'd agree.

Good to know I'll be reading up on him. and I know you did your home work on D.

Dennards our guy.

Brendan

@bob Haha always a guard!

I like your thinking, Bob. I like Dennard for CB in the first round, I think he plays the style Rex really likes.

bob
bob

@Brendan @bob

Hard decision I sure there will be much thought put into that DeSean has a  big price tag however if he stay on the field I think he's worth the money.

If they do take Desean I'll be wanting a CB or guard with the 1st pic If one of the top two corners are there I draft a corner.

Brendan
Brendan

@bob What do you think, does Idzik pull off the unthinkable and trade for DeSean Jackson?

bob

@Brendan @bob

Great answer Brenden.. Woop there  it is..

If I can put one word with Vick I use the word distraction...however if he plays well all is good.

@Brendan @bob  I just prefer to see what Geno has, even if Vick is better right now.  Rather lose with Geno and see if he can develop.
