Calvin Pryor with Roger Goodell

First-round pick Pryor doesn’t practice due to tooth issue

First-round draft pick Calvin Pryor did not participate in OTAs with the Jets on Wednesday due to needing his wisdom teeth removed.

Pryor told reporters that the side of his face is swollen and he can’t wear a helmet, since it puts pressure on his tooth.

He said he will have his wisdom teeth pulled next week and hope to return to practice soon.

Forget the salary cap - put caps on those teeth and get him the hell out on the field

Next week?  What's the hold-up?  Do it this evening.

@jaym  Knee scopes are not a big deal...at all.

He'll miss a few weeks, no big deal. Makes sense to do it now while he's still recovering from the biceps injury.

If I was getting one, I wouldn't share your lackadaisical attitude....

@a57se What? An NFL coach didn't give a timetable to a recovery on a surgery that hasn't happened? Get out!

Of course not, he has other things to consider that I don't. I can firmly tell you that this is a month recovery, barring a setback. If it was a major injury, he'd have had a major surgery.

It's not speculation, dude. I don't know how many times I need to be right regarding injuries before people think I'm not just some wahoo on Web MD, but I'm starting to think that day will never come. I know what I'm talking about when it comes to sports injuries, I will leave it at that.

@a57se Not trivializing anything. It's a 3-4 week injury and he'll be behind the 8-ball. But he'll be ready for training camp, so what's the uproar about?

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se This is a routine procedure that is done all the time.

Type "knee scope NFL" into Google, the entire first page is a list of current NFL players sitting out OTAs with knee scopes.

@a57se Yes, with that detailed injury breakdown he gave. I forgot you are the resident injury expert.

@Jeff E. Guy I'm sorry? I don't follow.

They aren't. People get them every offseason, it's one of those "standard procedures" for NFL players, especially bigger guys deep in their careers.

@BDarc23 I had all 4 of mine pulled at the same time and helped a friend move into his new apartment in the afternoon.

Of course this was back when we were tougher than you young whippersnappers with your tweeter and your googling and such.

I also used to wear an onion on my belt which was the fashion back in the day.

@Ceifus Hornswoggle @__fense @Jesse DeBear @jaym @Marcus Armstrong @Bent I agree it is not "major" surgery but the procedure depends on how impacted they are. Sometimes a dentist can do it and sometimes it requires an oral surgeon. If you need an oral surgeon then he wouldn't be able to do it until whatever infection he has goes away.

Edit- Also if he does all 4 at once then he won't be practicing for a couple of days.

It's not a major surgery.  You can get it done in the morning and be on the field in the afternoon.  Some people need general anesthetic, but many just elect for the gas and ibuprofen.  People with money though may want to be knocked out and then lay in bed all afternoon.  Guess it depends on your situation.

@Jesse DeBear @jaym @Marcus Armstrong @Bent If they wait a week, then he won't be able to participate next week either.

Which reminds me, are their OTA's next week? They might be waiting because he'd rather have his tooth hurt and his face swollen during meetings and stuff this week and have the week of being doped out on painkillers happen next week if there's nothing going on.

@Brendan @jaym Pfft.  Tatum would have close lined himself and knocked them out.
