GEICO SportsNite: Namath talks Vick

Joe Namath likes that the Jets added QB Michael Vick to their roster.

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

Namath is entitled to his opinion and as he told the press he thinks Vick is the right man for the starting job.  In the end we thinks the Jets will choose whoever gives the Jets the best chance to win and a huge part of that is playing mistake free football.  Holding onto the football is crucial to Rex Ryan; the Jets defense is more than capable of holding their own, but he needs an offense which can do the same to be competitive.

Geno Smith had trouble holding onto the football over the course of the 2013 season and turned the ball over by 21 interceptions and 4 fumbles.  Comparatively in seven games last year Vick had three interceptions and three fumbles.  The key here is that Smith had just two interceptions over his last four games in 2013 … was he turning the corner?  The Jets will want Smith to succeed, but the fact that the team has Vick on the roster gives them a better alternative at quarterback than they’ve had in a very long time.

The way I see it Vck and Geno are basically the same type of QB. Except that Vick is a better runner, has great experience and has led a team to the playoffs. That is what I think Joe was taking about. Lets face it the Jets are a young team and Geno is still trying to find himself. The team looks to the QB to lead and we are lucky to have Vick. Geno is tuff, and he showed it last year when he stood in front of the cameras and took the blame for his mistakes. The way he talked about Vick, I don't think he would mind sitting and learning from Vick. In that scenario everybody wins.

I wonder if he wants to kiss Vick too...

Much respect to Broadway Joe, as he gave us our only SB...but his opinions means nothing - as it relates to our starting quarterback.

I'll probably get a lot of flack for this, but I know for a fact that it won't be either Geno or Vick starting this year.  Simms will beat them both out in the preseason.  He's smart and doesn't turn the ball over.  Geno wants to prove that he's not as bad as he was last year - so he's going to be trying way too hard to impress.  Vick wants to prove that he can still play at a high level, which he can't.  You can't play the QB position when your head is wrapped up tight in whether or not you are any good at it.  Simms has the demeanor and intelligence to keep the offense moving without taking stupid, pressured chances.  Mark my words, Simms will be the week one starter.

So sick and tired of the Jets beat writers stirring up this crap.

The comments seem innocent to me and hes clearly answering leading questions. All he is saying is that when healthy, Vick gives the team a great chance to win. He isn't a damn coach or GM for this team. Now all of a sudden you turn on ESPN and they are discussing a QB Controversy. Cimini and Mehta can't stay relevant without Namath at this point.

Unless Vick gets hurt or just falls on his face performance-wise in the pre-season, which I can't see happening to a veteran like Vick, I just can't envision that the Jets will have Smith starting w/ Game 1. Geno Smith is just not polished enough yet to challenge Vick. It'll come down to one criterion: can Smith beat out Vick in ability to run an offense? I cannot see how a QB who really had a very poor first season can overwhelm the coaching staff and convince them that he will run an offense better than an experienced, and perfectly capable, QB with the game experience of Vick

I can't see any other outcome than Vick starting the season.

I stopped reading this post after I read the second line...that's absolutely not true, Vick will beat out Smith at camp but the jets brass will put Smith on the field to start the season. It's unfortunate because this is a young team and they need a veteran to control the offense on the field and I don't think Smith is ready. I'm not saying Smith can't or didn't improve in the off-season, I just strongly believe there has never been a young qb to ever put up consistent stats in his rookie and sophomore seasons like a veteran can do, maybe Andrew luck being one exception. You have to be foolish to think the jets will give Vick the starting job, well foolish if you have been paying attention to the jets since woody took over. The only way Vick wins the job is if Smith throws an average of three picks a game during preseason, but I give him at least some credit and believe that won't happen. Don't get me wrong I think Smith has the tools to be a good in the league, he certainly has the head for it unlike Sanchez, but I don't see him beating out Vick in his sophomore season.

You know what I hate, how the last 4 games geno played are being over hyped. He played the vikings. Dead last in pass coverage and the dolphins with out no corners. Stop the crap. Vick is better hate it or love it. Geno can sit his monkey looking ass down. Im tired of settling with mediocrity

i'm so tired of ex-jets weighing in. Namath played so long ago that he might as well have played a different sport. As for Klecko, i find his comments on SNY to be at best superficial and at worst incoherent. But this is the era we live in- everyone is an expert and entitled to their opinion no matter how stupid they are.

What about Mike Westofff's comments saying that Geno is in for a " WAR" to retain the starting QB postion, from Vick, that combined w/ the fact that Rex is on a 1 year deal & will be fired if the Jets have a losing season? Namath is correct Geno isn't there yet. Another issue completely ignored on this site is the fact that most 2nd year QB's take a step back, Wilson, RG3, Luck, dude for San Fran, all had step back years & had to adjust. Joe is correct again in stating that Vick knows the system, which gives no advantage to Geno. I will bet, a large sum of money that at least two of the major papers have a Vick/Geno score card that they will update, every day in camp...

@Ceifus Hornswoggle  Really? That's bold...So, I guess they are going to carry 4 QB's...Not likely. I can see him starting in the CFL, maybe you're right. My flag football team could use him as well...

@MS  An excellent point.

Let's not forget the real culprit here:  A media obsessed with PREAM, looking to create a controversy to report on.

@Joan Israel It's a different team.  Decker, CJ2K and (we hope) Amaro are all the types of weapons that make MM's WCO run better.  The hope is with more NFL and WCO experience, coupled with better personnel, especially at the RB and TE safety valves, Geno can take a big leap in accuracy and INT %.  From how he endured last season, his final 4 games and the fact that he did QB a team that vastly overachieved at 8-8, Geno does deserve some benefit of the doubt.  I tend to agree, however, that Vick will be hard to beat out because folks vastly underestimate Vick's ability as a QB.  When he's on, he's a star.

tsjc68

@Joan Israel  I think everyone who thinks "Geno is definitely starting Week 1" or "Vick is definitely starting Week 1" is wrong.

We just don't know.  There's several logical scenarios where Geno is the starter and several where Vick is.  And the team has valid and logical reasons to pick each of them, depending on how things look in Cortland.

Too soon to tell.

@Stephen Zuccato  I stopped reading after the first line of this post. Can you post the winning lottery numbers since you have your crystal ball working?

Im sorry for the error. I met the raiders and not vikings.

Or you can look at it as a lot of pressure being lifted off his shoulders once we were out of playoff contention... once we were out he played great.

Brendan

@Freddough Jean  No, he plays the Vikings in the final four games this year.

They played the Browns, Raiders, Panthers and Dolphins. Three top defensive units...and the Raiders.

And yeah...nice casual racism. Go play in traffic.

Really, dude?  Come on.  You don't like Geno, that's fine, but don't say that.

@idzik4real Spoken by an idiot with an opinion. Frankly I'd take the word of an NFL HOF QB  and college ALL American over you. And as for Klecko , he will be in the HOF , made All Pro at 3 different positions so , yeah I'd say him and Joe are entitled to their opinions , which are quite frankly coming from football people not some jerk who has a computer and a TV

@tsjc68  We'll have a post on the rookie camp later.  You might want to re-post in there.

@jaygo @MS  Namath is just giving his opinion. And whatever... its valid for all i know. The point is how his opinion becomes news. Hes not creating that, Cimini and Mehta are. Hes an old man who got knocked in the head too much and loves the limelight... hes just giving an opinion. He knows nothing about the reality of the current Jets organization.

For gods sake. Vick already said its Genos job. The coaches said its Genos job to lose. They like each other and are excited to work together... theres no controversy

Now im gonna get a stupid Dolphin or Giant fan come up to me and ask me about the QB controversy

@jaygo @MS

Q: Do you think Namath is an innocent victim or a willing participant in manufacturing controversy?

A: Yes.

tsjc68

@Brendan @Freddough Jean Those four defenses ranks in 2013:

Cleveland: 9th total defense, 8th pass defense, 18th rush defense, 23rd scoring

Oakland: 22nd/28th/13th/29th

Carolina: 2nd/6th/2nd/2nd

Miami: 21st/16th/24th/8th

Cleveland and Carolina were elite defenses.  Miami was average.  Only Oakland was subpar.

Harper is intriguing.  Like his tape more than Fabian Truss (although Truss offers more upside as a returner).

@jaygo @MS @tsjc68  Its not about content. Theres always content. There are channels exclusively dedicated to the NFL on TV and Radio. Its about the audience. Mehta and Cimini are dreaming of a national audience, when in reality their job as a beat writer is to supply information to a local audience. The only way for them to achieve a national audience is to create controversy.

Namath isn't saying anything new or reveling there. Other former Jets have said it, other news personalities have said it. It means nothing.

MS
MS

@tsjc68 @MS @jaygo  He might of even said that after... we will never know. All theyll write about is the first part and all theyll show is what we see.

Namath isn't the issue. I guess he could be more conscious about it, but hes an old dude and loves the spotlight. Hes gonna be himself. The beat writers need to stop creating news out of nothing.

@MS @jaygo  Had Joe responded to the question with a diplomatic "Well, Vick when healthy is pretty good, he'll be tough to beat out, but Geno has a lot of talent too and he finished strong, the team is high on him and so am I, it'll be fun to see how it plays out..." the reporter would have switched off his dictaphone mid-sentence and walked away.

WHERE'S THE DRAMA AND THE CONTROVERSY, JOE, YOU'RE BUMMING ME OUT WITH ALL THIS EVENHANDEDNESS AND HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE.

True Fans LOVE everything the Jets do and NEVER speak ILL of ANYONE on the Team or in the Front Office.

Except for Stephen Hill, him you can trash.
