Geno Smith taking reps with first team

Geno Smith is taking first-team reps at OTAs, according to the team’s beat reporters on Twitter.

Smith is the starting quarterback, Michael Vick has said repeatedly. The team has said there will be a competition, but that is likely to be to push Smith in his development.

Vick is taking snaps with the starters, too, though.

We are likely to hear about this  all summer long. This is absolutely a media driven "controversy".  The team wants Smith to be the starter, but wants him to earn it. That's about all that can be said. End of story. But, since New York media cannot endure a Jets team without controversy, they will try to build one.

lol..the writer says Geno is taking first reps to base this on there isn't a competition per say, it's just to push Geno along, but really he is the starter, then he destroys the reason he is basing his facts at the end, "Vick is getting starter reps too, though". Too funny.  Looks like a competition to me, but I believe he is right, there really isn't a competition in the sense of who the most probable QB of the future would be "though"..lol

Ha, Pryor missed practice because his face is all puffy from wisdom teeth surgery.

Well that should lay to rest any ideas about a QB controversy......Geno 8 of 10 while Vick was 3 of 7.....Geno wins easily!

Gotta give the Jets beat some props....they do a better job of tweeting about OTA's then the Giants beat does.

Vick , nice deep ball to Kerley but off his finger tips.

You should all follow Chris Nimbley, if you're not already.

In the past few minutes: Geno with a beautiful back-shoulder toss to Sudfeld (great "hands catch") for 20ish yards, Ellis running Geno down and out of bounds (Kenrick 350-pounds-of-man Ellis), and Geno hitting Kerley in traffic.

@Pablo Bruno I'm pretty sure he wrote out the post and then saw saw a report that Vick is getting some snaps too, and threw it in to cover all of the bases.

@Brendan Yeah, but Ellis only did that because Harrison was taking on a quintuple team at the time.

@Brendan @idothis2

the spirit of Ed Reed is on the team. the body is soon to follow

@jake100 @a57se I was surprised he was even able to make it onto the field with all the animal protestors that weren't there.

@Bent Harrison actually threw Ellis at Geno, that's why he was moving so fast.

@Brendan @jdawggg When does Allen and Bush get an opportunity to gain experience? I can watch Kobe Bryant on T.V, and I'll never be a good basketball player, at some point I'll need to get some hands on.

@jdawggg Reed "struggled" for a couple games, but he settled in and was tremendous for them down the stretch.

Situational role? He played 66% of the snaps in the final four weeks, I'd say that's a bit more than a situational player. He was also directly responsible for Milliner's strides late in the season.

He was easily the best safety on the team last year.

@idothis2 @Pablo Bruno And it even goes beyond knowing your teammates'  assignments. You have to know your actual teammates. How they react to plays, how quickly can they notice the ball being thrown and get to when it's going to land, how fast they can be, how to communicate to them where you will be, etc. There's chemistry beyond knowing the playbook (which I'm sure has changed in the last 5 years, by the way) inside and out.

@Brendan @Pablo Bruno  Agreed and they should sign him to a one year, vet minimum but loaded with incentives. he intercepted more balls in the few games than we've seen anyone do since Kerry Rhodes hey day.

As Brendan stated twice, Reed was the best safety on the team last year. that was fairly easy to see

@Pablo Bruno

plug and play? that's a little to simplistic for a NFL Defense, let alone a Rex Ryan Defense.  practice with teammates is important to be comfortable with not just your assignment, but the other members of the Secondary . when Reed began to get comfortable the Secondary was playing better than at any point during the season

@Brendan @Pablo Bruno Reed wasn't good last year, especially when he first came and was playing almost every down.  At that point he performed worse than Allen  He was better later in the season when he moved into more of a situational role.

I hope we don't bring him back.  He'd be maybe the 4th best safety on the team but Rex will be too tempted to act like he's still the player he once was.

Brendan
Brendan

@Pablo Bruno It was not plug and play. The calls are different, the scheme has changed, the players are different. There was an adjustment period and it's funny you don't realize that considering that's exactly what you are fixating on when you say things like Reed wasn't good last year.

@idothis2 Reed already knew Rex's defense, it was plug and play, but he youth is as important, I hope if he does play here, he is better prepared to play within his physical limitations, An athlete once he get's to the point that his talent begins to erode, they have 2 options, learn how to adopt to their new limitations, in his case he'll need to depend more on experience and how to take better angles and not on physical ability, or if they cannot adopt then it's time to move on from the sport.  I think he was at that point last year, that's why I say, lets hope he's prepared mentally.

@Pablo Bruno @Brendan

disagree. i am hard pressed to name a NFL player that can get to a team more than halfway through a season and have instant chemistry with his teammates and be comfortable to produce right away. turnovers increased when Reed started to get comfortable and it looked like he had a positive affect on Milliner

Pablo Bruno
Pablo Bruno

@brendan @Pablo Bruno I wouldn't be opposed to him being there on a very limited role, but at what point to you get the reps to your younger guys, Allen, Bush, Pryor, these guys need reps so they can grow.

Brendan
Brendan

@Pablo Bruno No, he is not a liability. I will repeat, in bold this time, my previous (and accurate) comment:

Ed Reed was the best safety on the team last year.

@Brendan @Pablo Bruno He's too old bro, he's a liability, the mental aspect is there, but he becomes a liability, he's at the point that his mind thinks he faster then he really is, all athletes reach that point and it's down hill, I think he's there or will be this year.
