Jets have private meeting with USC WR Marqise Lee

The Jets had a private meeting with USC wide receiver Marqise Lee after his pro day (Mehta, March 13).

The Jets could be looking to draft the 6′ receiver with the No. 18 pick in the upcoming draft.

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

Lee was the 2012 Biletnikoff Award winner (honor given to the best receiver in the country) but his stock might have taken a tumble after measuring 5′ 11 3/4″ and clocking a 4.52 at the Combine. Heading into the Combine, Lee was talked about as a first rounder … but will be now land in the second?

Part of the Jets interview must be construed as simple due diligence. Still, the Jets triumverate attended Sammy Watkins pro day and their extra intent around receivers is being noticed.  The Jets might have added Eric Decker and are about to add Brandon Pettigrew but the team would be wise to find a receiver early on in the draft to build around since Stephen Hill might never develop into the player Mike Tannenbaum drafted him to be.

will have to trade up for Lee, I say we keep our picks and draft the best guys we can get at our spot and fill rest of needs with capable FA's

What do you think Jets fans reactions would be if we drafted Marqise Lee with his 12.6% drop rate coming out of college and he struggles with drops early on like Stephen hill did?

I think signing Decker eliminates A. Robinson/ J. Matthews type of WR's from our board as they are very similar in style to him.

The Beckham/ Lee/ Cooks type or the Adams/ Moncrief type would be complimentary to what we already have.

You could argue we don't have an Evans/ Benjamin/ Coleman type since Hill isn't as physical as those guys but I find it hard to believe we would have 4 WR's 6'3" or taller + Kerley as our core.......

You think we might try to get James Harrison?

A private meeting . Wow that must be some top secret stuff..Ya dats right top secret stuff.

Can we try for Jared Allen? He's still got some left in the tank and with the interior linemen we have, Allen would wreak havoc on the outside. At the right price I think it'd be a great signing

Wow, whoever writes for Rotoworld really doesn't like ANYONE the Jets sign.....ripping Pettigrew as a catch and fall TE and a lousy run blocker. They ripped Giacomini yesterday and weren't exactly enthusiastic about Decker!

Now we are talking, love Lee

OK, I am not going to bother doing the first 17 picks as they create as many comments as the actual pick by the Jets. SO let's say we are on the clock at 18 and there are no trade down options and the following players are available:

M. Lee WR

E  Ebron TE

J. Gilbert CB

H. Dix S

CJ Mosley ILB

Z. Martin G/T

Who would you take and how would you rank these guys?

@a57se

Stephen Hill didn't win the Biletnikoff Award or come from a pro style offense you bozo....

Just like you confuse Sanchez with elite QB's you seem to be confusing Marques Lee with Stephen Hill

Lee was the best WR in the nation in 2012 and considered a top 5 pick.....Hill was the invisible man

lmao

@a57se  Brandon Marshal and Alshon Jeffreys have similar styles.  I don't think it matters.  You take the best WR available.

@a57se  They are ripping the team for a signing they haven't made yet? Can you say "narrative?" Does anyone have any credibility anymore? Good gracious.

@Brendan @a57se

It's an upgrade on Zach Sudfeld and Jeff Cumberland, but it's far from a difference-making acquisition. Pettigrew is a plodding, catch-and-fall guy in the passing game that has averaged 9.95 yards per reception in his five-year career. He's also been a liability when blocking in the run game. Pettigrew will barely be on the TE2 radar with Geno Smith and the Jets.

This is what they had to say.....

@MeAtBaLLPaRmX        I know Ebron is mocked high,  but I see somebody without elite size, speed or blocking ability.

I know he's got good hands and is going to be decent,  but I don't see another Vernon Davis.

@rstysanchz Have to agree if Gilbert is there, you have to take him, especially if we sign 2 FA WrS

a57se
a57se

@jma020 @a57se

Matthews doesn't have the same type of athleticism.......he is more your possession guy running precise routes.

I am talking about physical guys who can box out and outleap CB's for the ball. Moncrief really fits that bill with 4.40 speed while Adams is the box out guy with strong hands.....

jma020
jma020

@a57se @jma020  I kind of view Matthews as being similar to Jeffries.  I love Matthews personally. Like the guys you mentioned too.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se I think they're exaggerating quite a bit. He's flawed, sure, but he's a solid player. And they're making this criticism without a deal being signed or figures in place. Pettigrew at $5 million is a disaster. Pettigrew at half that (or lower) is not.

Tequila Joe

@jma020 @Tequila Joe @a57se @ww85  I can't stand the Giants by the way. I'd like to make that clear...

Tequila Joe

@jma020 @Tequila Joe @a57se @ww85  Hate to say it but I think it's true. Unless the Lions or Bills snatch him first which is a possibility. They drafted Shockey 10th years back and Eli loves throwing to TE's. It would be a solid pick for them.

jma020
jma020

@a57se @ww85  Not bad.  Maybe a change of scenery will do him well.  I don't think this shuts the door on Ebron.

MeAtBaLLPaRmX
MeAtBaLLPaRmX

I love Cooks, but not over Matthews or OBJ, at least for now, haha. At 5:30 I might want Martin from ND. I just have to stop playing out things in my head because it seems like I've been an ADHD case the past month haha.

@bklyndude @a57se@Bytor

I wouldn't be surprised if they DON'T meet with Beckham before the draft or any of the other LSU prospects since they have McGaughey on staff and he was at LSU the past two years......you would think we have pretty good intel on those guys already.

MeAtBaLLPaRmX
MeAtBaLLPaRmX

I would change that to Matthews or Beckham Jr to go along with Niklas or ASJ. Either combo works and would give us great balance. Add MJD and a guard in the middle rounds and we got something here

a57se
a57se

@bklyndude @a57se@Bytor

You don't have to convince me.....I've been clearly in the Lee/Beckham over Ebron crowd since day one.

bklyndude
bklyndude

@a57se @Bytor     Yeah,  but using a second round pick on a guy that you know can help in the run game and has the ability to help eventually in the passing game and red zone seems like a safe choice rather than Ebron in the first who won't help as much with his blocking.

Bytor
Bytor

@a57se @Bytor  Thanks. Like I said above if the rumor is true about signing Pettigrew how many TE's can we possibly have on this roster.

a57se
a57se

@bklyndude @a57se@MeAtBaLLPaRmX

I just think Beckham is getting a lot less attention then he should.... which is good for the Jets if he is on our Radar. You would think if we drafted a WR, we would draft someone who would be complimentary to what we have. Beckham definitely fits that bill.

a57se
a57se

@Bytor

Niklas has 'freakish'  athleticism.....but he also has the most to learn. I heard he might have to undergo some attitude adjustments as well.....

Bytor
Bytor

@bklyndude  Thanks! Like meatball above, my head is spinning from the possibilities. I was thinking OG in the second but now a combo of Lee/Niklas to go with Decker and Kerley sounds about right to make our offense GO.

But if they really did sign Pettigrew then for me OG and OLB are in play in the 2nd.

bklyndude
bklyndude

@Bytor     Niklas is much more athletic than Gilmore and one of the best blocking TE's in the draft.  He's been called baby Gronk by some.

I think if you are drafting a TE in the first round,  he either should be a good blocker or a real game changer.  I don't think Ebron without elite speed will be that guy.

MeAtBaLLPaRmX
MeAtBaLLPaRmX

To tell you the truth, I think I've changed my mind about what the Jets should do on an hourly basis for the past month or so, haha. Like I stated earlier, it really depends on what they do in FA/trades leading up to the draft. I'm not opposed to trading down for another pick and drafting Jordan Matthews.

Bytor
Bytor

@a57se @bklyndude  How much upside do you think Niklas has over a guy like Gilmore who we can get in the 4th?

I'm starting to think OG in the second.

bklyndude
bklyndude

@a57se @bklyndude   He played behind Tyler Eifert and has been rising up the boards.   ASJ was being talked about at the bottom of the first round/top of the second.   He probably slips because of his foot injury and could possibly be there.   Both present better value in my opinion.

a57se
a57se

@bklyndude

Niklas has only been playing TE for 2 seasons yet he is the best blocker in the Draft.....He also looks pretty good in the passing game. Sky is the limit for him IMHO.

bklyndude
bklyndude

@MeAtBaLLPaRmX       I just think targeting ASJ or Niklas in the second round is better value.

ASJ has a bad foot and can't run on his Pro Day,  but should be fine for camp.  Niklas is a good blocker who was under utilized in the passing game at ND, but has shown soft hands.

MeAtBaLLPaRmX
MeAtBaLLPaRmX

Tight ends are not known for their game breaking speed. It is nice, yes, but Antonio Gates, Tony Gonzalez, Gronk, etc.. do not have game breaking speed. They are big, can get open, and have great hands.

bklyndude
bklyndude

@MeAtBaLLPaRmX        Do you see Vernon Davis or Dustin Keller ?   I see a guy with good hands,  I just doubt his game breaking speed.

MeAtBaLLPaRmX
MeAtBaLLPaRmX

Look at his game tape. That's all that matters.

bklyndude

@a57se @bklyndude @jma020 @MeAtBaLLPaRmX

I know,  was a little curious myself.

Vernon seems like heads and shoulder more athletic,  but maybe I'm wrong, looks like another Keller,  which is pretty good.

bklyndude

@a57se @bklyndude @jma020 @MeAtBaLLPaRmX

Ebron is 6'4" and ran  4.60

Vernon is 6'3"  and ran  4.38

Keller is  6'3" and ran  4.55
