Jets re-sign Garrett McIntyre

The Jets have re-signed OLB Garrett McIntyre (Allen, April 9).

In 13 games last season, he made 19 total tackles (10 solo). He had two sacks.

McIntyre was a non-tendered restricted free agent.

Morning dude Jets! Can you feel it?! Today we land CJ, I feel it in me bones!

I'm happy that he's back.

BTW, I was at a coaching clinic with the top high school coach in the area who is an O-Line guru and happens to be a long-time Seahawks season ticket holder.  Someone asked him on his take about their free agency this year and his comment was that the only disappointment was losing starting right tackle Breno Giacomini to the Jets.

Bad for them but good for us ;)

Good ill never understand the hate he gets. Not a stud but the D is still solid when he is in.

Good special team signing. Good for depth. That's about it.

Erin Henderson is about 20 times better then he is. Gonna role the dice, hit the dumpster looking, Henderson is a starter, is fast & can tackle

OT - Sounds like Beckham was really impressive today and made to look even more so by the fact that Jarvis Landry really struggled.

Nice, McIntyre  might not be a number one starter, but he is a solid back up and ferocious on STs, he would make ganggrel proud!

When do we have to re-up with Mangold? My understanding he's on a 7-year (!) deal that goes through 2017, but I don't have enough info to say if all of those years are "real" years or not. The wacky contract Alex Mack is about to get from the Jags could up the price tag for pro bowl centers.

@Bernie Lyons

That is encouraging, I just hope the penalties don't become an issue....our offense has been so weak that anything bad happening seems too difficult to overcome.

@funkymonk  I would imagine that those not "real" years mean that the money isn't guaranteed, but the Jets still have the rights. So I wouldn't expect anything to be done with his deal unless they are attempting to save money.

I know, I have been pleading for him, but I really think he will bring a big spark to the offense. I know it is tough for us Jets fans to actually see a screen pass that can break one, but this is the threat in open space that he would bring. I am not saying spend too much more than 4M on him, but he is perfect for Marty's offense if the price is right. What a combo... Ivory/CJ !

@a57se @bobbyj  McIntyre's not a bad reserve linebacker.  Not sure what he's done to deserve such a criticism.

Henderson just had two DUIs and plays MLB, a totally different position.

@williamg1 @funkymonk  Mangold's deal already sets the market.  I don't think Mack's will be any bigger, even if it's frontloaded to dissuade matching.  They're probably in a position to assess Mangold on a year to year basis and he will probably remain on the same deal for as long as he continues to play at a high level.

@Bent @madbacker  heyyyy!! i am not questioning your comments about rex's system. I fully agree! You know I am a huge Ravens fan. That's all! McAlister and Rolle were the best the Ravens had then. Not including Neon Deon for that one year.

Like right now, you posted an excellent piece pointing out the strengths and weakness of our CBS. Knowing Rex he could easily keep a rotation of CBs opposite Millner that would tailor the assignments to the strengths of the O each week.

The Sub packages we employ and our Dline are going to allow guys to shine that on other teams wouldn't have the chance to do so.

@madbacker @Bent  They each had years where they were among the top players, but at the same time they benefited from a strong front seven more than other corners around the league and certainly weren't playing at an elite level throughout Rex's successful time in Baltimore.  I stand by my statement that Cimini was wrong to suggest that Rex cannot have a good defense without elite corners, although I do concede that you could make an argument for either of those players playing at an elite level for a year or two during Rex's time with the Ravens.

@Bent  i totally agree about Henderson, i was just throwing it out there about being a WLB. He is exactly like Scott. 4-3 WLB and 3-4 ILB. No way the team would gamble on converting him to a 3-4 Strongside backer. Esp one with the responsibilities that our strongside has.

I am hoping for a nice spending spree on vets, post draft for the D. there are still some names out there that could play a role for the team. And that point the guys will be dirt cheap.

Guys like 20 ED REED!!!!!!!!!!!

@Bent one of these days can you explain why you don't think Rolle and McAlister weren't elite CBs for the ravens please!!

@madbacker @Bent @a57se @bobbyj

Yes, he's played as an OLB but that was in a 4-3 system.  I don't see him as interchangeable with Pace like Garrett is.  Davis maybe.  He's an inside backer in a 4-3 system - I don't think he's ever been an edge rusher.

I had totally forgotten about Cunningham.  Would be surprised if he (or Troy Davis) were able to jump ahead of Garrett, who as others have said is no lock for the roster.

@Bent @a57se @bobbyj  Erin Henderson also played WLB when he first joined the Vikings and didn't kick to MLB after his brother was released and was competing against Cook (i believe) from South Carolina. While Cook is a proven 2 down MLB Henderson offers some coverage ability. Definitely isn't fast and IMO not better against the run than McIntyre.

However in our system, as Bent said, he is a pure reserve ILB. Barnes, McIntyre and Cunningham are backing up Pace and Coples. Personally I rather have Barnes and McIntyre there than Cunningham.

I agree, although it was pretty poor last year.  However, Garrett is one of the few that was not largely to blame.

@Bent @a57se @bobbyj  Mcintyre is pretty good for what he is. Our kick coverage is always pretty good.

@funkymonk @Bent  I know Brick has a deal whereby the Jets can effectively roll over the guarantees as they go along.

Mangold's on the other hand seem to be structured without any big salaries and with plenty of escalators in the deal.

@Bent  Thanks Bent.

By "not real" I meant years with bloated non-guaranteed figures that so often end up in the later years of big contracts, but usually result in a cut or re-negotiation before they actually happen (ie Holmes, Cromartie)
