NFL: New York Jets at Atlanta Falcons

Jets release RB Mike Goodson

The Jets announced on Wednesday that they have released RB Mike Goodson with the “left team” designation.

GM John Idzik said the Jets gave Goodson “ample opportunity” (Martin, June 18).

Goodson had been a no-show during Jets Minicamp, and head coach Rex Ryan said Tuesday that the situation would be dealt with.

In addition to not being present at the team’s mandatory minicamp, Goodson also failed to show up for any of the Jets’ OTA’s.

While Goodson was rehabbing an injury and dealing with legal issues, his absence was unexplained.

Goodson’s agent offered no excuses, saying that his client needed to learn to communicate better.

Goodson was suspended for the first four weeks of last season after being arrested on drug and weapon charges, returned in Week Five, and suffered a season-ending injury to his knee in Week Six.

With Goodson now off the roster, the Jets will likely turn to some combination of Chris Johnson, Chris Ivory, and Bilal Powell at RB.

This, mercifully, closes the book on a disappointing chapter. Goodson, the first free agent signing of the John Idzik regime, never got a chance to show the abilities that earned him a three-year deal (aside from some brief flashes in the Falcons game). The Jets do have decent depth at the running back position, but I would expect them to sign another running back to take his place on the roster. From what we hear, they’ve been in contact with a few possibilities.

I would imagine that they have released him with a “left squad” designation to ensure they won’t be on the hook for an injury settlement. Goodson is unlikely to be anywhere near 100% right now, so they might otherwise have ended up liable for some or all of his salary. While he remained under contract, there was a slim possibility that they could have recovered some or all of his signing bonus if he was convicted of a crime for his part in the 2013 incident. However, with only around $1m at stake and no immediate resolution in sight, the Jets have presumably given up on this.

(miketaliaferro) All laughing & snarking aside, I'm actually worried about the man, himself. For his personal safety… long & short term.

My first question is: Is Goodson still alive? Is he a threat to himself? Is he in danger from someone else?

Is he injured somewhere?

I know as many head cases as anyone else & felt pretty much like everyone else here, but when HIS AGENT said he hadn't heard from him & couldn't find him, that got me scared. Then, the fact that none of his NFL mates had heard from him in months stopped me totally.

This is simply too freaky, in human terms.

I, for one, hope he's alive & that he's OK.

Michael, call home.

When he goes to trial this will have no effect, but when it comes to sentencing this has the potential to bite Goodson in the ass. Now instead of the defense being able to say" Mr. Goodson needs to be out of jail for his job, he is showing that he is trying to atone for his mistakes and he has a very limited window to make money in his given field. I think it benefits both th state and Mr. Goodson that he remain out of jail pending good behavior Or at least be given a short sentence." He will now hear the DA say that" Mr. Goodson is unemployed, has shown no remorse for his actions and presents a threat to our community."

I imagine Goodson is telling himself that he would rather spend his last free months with his friends and family, but by acting like this, he likely ruined his nfl chances and his chance at freedom.

Hey guys. Bartolo Colon hit a double and then was driven in from second. It's magical.

Sorry it worked out this way for Goodson. Guy has a world of talent, just doesn't seem to have the common sense to go with it (talking as much about missing time in camp as much as what happened last year).

This offseason is moving painfully slow.

Do we still have that Richardson guy from the Rams???

Wow, finally, what were the Jets waiting for, well at least they waited for the perfect opportunity, release him. Now we have a free roster, perhaps we can pick up another lineman or two..lol

You know what, eff him.  Jets gave him plenty of support and opportunity, but he insisted on digging his own hole.  I was really hoping to actually have him contribute, but it was obviously was not meant to be.

Bilal Powell approves this message.

@Ian DeMartino It would be hilarious if New England signed him on Monday.

@Hanknaples What were you right about, and what was I wrong about?

You're wrong for calling him a criminal, or a "criminal wannabe." So there's that.

@williamg1

Physically he looks bigger, stronger this year.

Cumberland is bigger... Hill is bigger... Aboushi is bigger... OUR WHOLE TEAM IS ON TEH STEROIDS

@a57se

LaRod Stephens-Howling would be interesting.

I think Felix Jones has proven by now that he's just not that good.  JMHO.

EDIT: I'm surprised you didn't pick a youngster, though, since you are usually so pro-youth.  We didn't draft an RB, but there's a ton of late-round or UDFA RBs scattered all over NFL rosters at the moment who are likely to kick free this August.

ESPN would call it a" high value" move by Belichick.

@tsjc68 Yeah, I like LSH, but Jones is made of glass and his speed isn't enough of a runaway skill that he can compensate for his other negatives.

@williamg1 Yeah, I think it's a combination of that and 35 blunts a day.

Weezy during his Da Drought mixtape years is one of the best stretches of rapper ever. And then he went crazy, started taking E before every show and started having sex with the stage and sht.

We're still maintaining that there's at least 4-5 better veteran guard options we should sign before considering Incognito.

It's gonna be a RB I think.

Possible., But all the scant evidence we have points to the contrary.

@a57se @tsjc68

Okay.  I went and looked at his stats and he produced better than I remembered.  I'm less averse to him now, and I'll get on board with you as pro-Felix.

@Pablo Bruno @tsjc68 @Bent

Travelle Wharton and Uche Nwaneri and Wade Smith are as physical as he is, and they're less penalty-prone and better teammates, to boot.

@BDarc23 @tsjc68 @Disgruntled Jets Fan @williamg1

Not exactly.

It was three RBs (Ivory, Powell, Green) until Goodson was activated, and then when he went on IR it dropped back down to three until we claimed Darius Reynaud in December.

Looks like a pretty even split of games with 3RB vs. 4RB on the 53-man roster.

@a57se @tsjc68 @BDarc23

You're not Rex Ryan or Marty Mornhinweg, though.  They value Powell's solid jack-of-all-trades play more than you do, it seems.

@a57se @tsjc68

To be clear, I'm not saying that all those guys will be cut, just that all those guys have a decent chance of being cut.

Have you perused Green Bay's depth chart?  They have SEVEN runningbacks on roster, and Eddie Lacy is the only one of the seven whose job is truly safe.  Franklin getting cut wouldn't surprise me, he's done nothing so far to elevate himself from the rest of the pack.

@a57se @Brendan There's no reason to think that they will never appear, just because they haven't yet.

@a57se @Brendan You won't know if the character never appears until the show finishes airing though, will you?

Best not to risk discussing it until the last ever season is over.

I don't know what they're alluding to and hope not to find out, but from what I do gather, the books and TV series have, in places, been in a different order to one another, so something from a later book may already have been on screen and some things from an earlier book may appear later (and some things weren't even in the books or were put across a bit differently).

I therefore agree with _fense.

tsjc68
tsjc68

@a57se @tsjc68

And yet, he was already behind James Starks and DuJuan Harris on the depth chart and they just added two high-quality UDFA backs in Rajion Neal and LaDarius Perkins this winter.

His roster spot is most definitely in jeopardy.

Brendan
Brendan

@Bent You're both right. Mentioning it would be a dck move.

The show and books aren't identical, but they're heading to the same end. The show changes things (like Arya/The Hound hanging out a lot longer than in the books, for reasons of face time and to give other storylines time to catch up) and they've done it in some other areas.

There's no reason to believe that something is "never" happening just because it hasn't happened yet, at least in the case of something potentially hugely important to the story. IMO D&D have done a solid job juggling the difficulties of adapting these books into show-form, fwiw.
