The Jets have signed OG Hayworth Hicks from Iowa State off the Indianapolis Colts practice squad to the 53-man roster. By NFL rule, he now has to stay on the Jets roster at least 3 weeks.
The Jets have liked Hicks for a while. They put in a waiver claim for him after he was cut by the Colts following the preseason. Here’s what Bent wrote about Hicks after finding out the Jets put in a claim for him:
Hicks played guard at Iowa State, but went undrafted. He’s a 330 pounder and played guard with the Colts during the preseason, where reports were generally favorable about how well he played.
With Hicks now on board, the Jets have one more roster spot open. It sounds like that spot might go to a WR. I can tell you they are working out former former LSU WR Terrence Toliver and former Maryland WR Tony Logan (Kyle Wilson’s cousin) today. However, I expect Ricky Sapp to be activated soon. Thus, it is possible these WRs coming in will be to replace Sapp on the practice squad once he gets activated. Or, maybe BOTH Sapp and one of these WRs will get signed to the 53-man roster, meaning a player currently on the active roster will be on the way out…
It is also likely that Sapp could be on his way up and neither of the WRs will be signed, but rather, they getting looked at for the future. The “bye week workouts” as they are known, are a time where many guys are brought in that the Jets are interested in .. but not for the “now.” Tanny likes to look for guys that he can sign to a reserve/future contracts in January during the “bye weeks workouts.” The bye weeks workouts were supposed to actually take place during the bye last Monday, but got pushed back to today (and some yesterday) due to Sandy.
Regardless, Bent will have a BGA in the next few days on Hicks…
