Jets sign RB Michael Smith, release S Brandon Hardin

The Jets will sign running back Michael Smith (Wilson, August 1).

Listed as 5 foot 9 and 205 lbs, Smith was drafted in 2012 by the Bucaneers out of Utah State. He played in one game in 2012.

From Rotoworld:
Smith is an undersized burner out of Utah State. The Buccaneers cut him in May. Smith will likely be a practice body until the Jets make final cuts.

UPDATE: The Jets confirmed the move and also announced that they released safety Brandon Hardin, who had been dealing with a foot injury.

I’ll have a full BGA scouting report for you tomorrow, but one thing worth knowing is that Smith is a pretty promising kickoff returner, a role which nobody seems to have made their own at this stage.

While the rotoworld report is probably correct and Smith will be used mainly as cover with Bilal Powell injured and some of the other runners being monitored closely due to previous injuries, that might be something to watch.

I remember him. WE talked about him quite a bit. Interesting.

I like him. He's likely not good enough to crack the roster (both Powell and Richardson are better), but he's more intriguing than Alex Green and worth putting on the PS.
