Link: Bart Scott on Calvin Pace

Over at Jets Insider, Christopher Nimbley talks to CBS analyst and former Jets linebacker Bart Scott about Calvin Pace, who recently re-signed with the Jets on a two-year deal. This has to go down as a must-read for any Jets fan.

Scott talks in intricate detail about Pace’s exact role and how people underestimate his importance to Rex Ryan’s defense. He also touches on how the defense has changed now that the strength is in the defensive line and how Pace can play at a high level for a few more years because he is so “skinny”.

As usual when we get an article this good, we’re not going to give you an excerpt here, to encourage you to click the link and read the whole thing. Apparently there’s more to follow later in the week too, so we’ll definitely be passing that along to our readers if it’s as good as this.

I think we need a steel cage match between @Brendan and @a57se at halftime of the Jets Patriots game. Think we can get that in the works? Bassett has to have some connections over at Metlife to make this happen. Would definitely take some of the sting away from seeing Revis in a Pats uniform.

so it seems as  if MJD is not on the menu...:(

I would love to see the jets trade for desean Jackson. Yeah he costs a lot but for a third round pick and maybe something else, the jets could address a big need with a relatively young receiver. Also we wouldn't need to go WR with our first pick.

He's so biased, Bart makes it sound like its hard playing LB'er in the NFL.

If Pace if so important, and pass rushers are so easy to find, why don't the Jets get more sacks?

@Nolan Meyer  On paper that is a no-brain' er. Jackson is a tremendous talent and wold be a great complement to Decker as his speed would open up the intermediate zones for Decker as well as the TE (who ever that turns out to be?)The problem is if the reports on Jackson's behavior and attitude are accurate, would we not just be bringing in Santonio Holme's 2.0 ? Hey, all you would have to do is change the name on the back of Santonio's old #10 jersey. From what i have read this is another super talented guy who think's it's all about him. With a young impressionable QB trying to find his way I'm not sure bringing a nut job like Jackson in is the way to go.That's probably why Philly is only looking for a 3rd round pick for a clear #1 receiver. Kind of reminds me of us getting Holme's for only a 4th or 5th round pick 3 or 4 years ago.And we all saw how that played out.

Can somebody please post the article?

@Brendan  Well, there goes that.  Wanna hear my conspiracy theory?

It goes like this.

1. Jets decide to bring back Sanchez.

2. Jets leak story about possibility of bringing back Sanchez.

3. Negative reaction to possibility of bringing back Sanchez.

4. Jets schedule visit with Mike Vick.

5. Even more negative reaction to the possibility of bringing in Vick.

6. Vick's visit takes place over the weekend with no intention of signing him.

7. Jets announce that they've decided not to sign Vick and instead have decided to retain Sanchez on a reduced salary.

8. Negative reaction ... but not as negative as it would have been without the Vick visit.

Stage 5 was fun...only a couple of days until stage 6!

Bringing in Evans or Lee would be great for this offense.

@Brendan he would be amazing..Ravens getting smith might take them out of the running for a receiver.

@Hanknaples @levi  You're insane. He's not a good football player, and he's a worse person.

@Bent @ifti99  Makes sense, I'm fine with resigning pace, but I still hope the Jets address OLB's in the draft, could be someone who Rex want as a project to develop, preferably someone who is explosive off the line.

madbacker

@Bent @ifti99  Bent wouldn't you also agree that true pass rushers (Suggs, Ware, Matthews, Derrick Burgress) are not that easy to find, situational rush linebackers like Barnes and Sapp are.

Adiluls Thomas, Bryan Thomas, Pace (Now, not when he was our Rush) Anthony Spencer are very important to the Scheme. A scheme that only the Ryans and those of their tree utilize.

@Bent  I think it would be a waste of money to sign Sanchez as a backup for anything more than 2MM/yr.

If he out performs Geno, he's still terrible, and the Jets don't really benefit.

I'd rather go with Simms (who is clearly worse) and put that money towards a player than can help.

I'd even be ok with banking the cap money and rolling it towards next year.

The Jets are squeezing Sanchez, killing time while the other QB scrubs get signed as backups, and Sanchez has no options.

I love it  :-)

@Bent  I think Vick would be better as a mentor for Geno than Sanchez because Geno can be that kind of player.  He can definately throw the deep ball and drive the ball like Vick, and although Smith is a passer first, he has the ability to run.

Brendan
Brendan

@Bent  I can see it.

Stage 9: Sanchez plays better than Geno in preseason.

Stage 10: ?

Btw, was that imminent low-level signing you heard whispers about one of the deals announced recently?

@Pat d  Evans is what Decker is, a Possession receiver, we have 2 of them, Decker and Nelson.  Lee is not what he used to be prior to his injury, you can see it at the combine.  It would be a huge risk I think. I think if Ebron is there you take him if not, I would take Cooks.

Pat d
Pat d

Monty if Evans is atop the Ravens board they are taking him

Brendan
Brendan

@Monty Granito I think it's a safe bet that signing a 34 year old WR will not take anyone out of the running for a young WR.

@madbacker @Pablo Bruno @Bent  Drafting one of each (ILB and OLB) in this year's draft would be ideal, IMO. We don't necessarily need them right this second but we will need replacements soon and we have extra picks this year. Good timing to stock up for the future if we can hit on one or both picks.

madbacker

@Pablo Bruno @Bent For pace's role sacks is a secondary motovation. Yes with AT he was able to fluidly get to the QB with both OLBs but AT also Covered, Contained the Run and Rushed the QB. That is why when AT went to the Pats, the Ravens didn't miss a beat with Johnson stepping in because he covered and contained the run well. This is also when Rex started using Barnes mores as a balance to Suggs on passing downs. I agree, I would LOVE to see a new OLB but with Barnes and Pace and Coples. I would think they would favor bringing in a new ILB to learn from and ultimately replace Harris and or Davis.

They became offense oriented? Someone forgot to tell Joe Flacco.

@madbacker  I go to school with a lot of Ravens fans, and they aren't happy either about their team's cap and player situation.

madbacker
madbacker

Ngata HAD to move to NT because mount Cody was a bust and Kemoeatu wasn't re-signed. Rumors have it that they are looking to bring in competition for Canty at DE and need another DE after loosing Arthur Jones. The rest of the D is staying the same. They don't have many back ups returning and i think about 8 mil in space.  Just throwing the idea out there because the know the system and the Ravens could use the space/draft picks

madbacker
madbacker

@Bent I keep hearing bad things about the Ravens, mostly regarding the lack of cap space. My few friends in the league have mentioned that not everyone is happy how things have turned out with the team becoming more offense oriented since Lewis left. I was focusing mostly on the $$$ situation that possible Webb could be. Smith is still young and has more upside.

@madbacker @Bent @ifti99  Those two guys are pretty solid but is there any realistic hope they'll be available?

Bent

@madbacker @Bent @ifti99

Pretty much that's what Bart is saying.

I've certainly written before about Pace having a take-on-blocker pass rush assignment that enables someone else to generate pressure with the QB having no escape hatch.

madbacker

@ Bent @Brendan Also, keeping in-line with the idea of possible trade, what do you guys think of Jimmy Smith and Lardarius Webb?

@McGeorge @Bent

The market seems to suggest $4m is the going rate for established backups.  I'd be surprised if either Sanchez or Vick got less than $3m

@Bent @Brendan  south park reference ? also if sanchez is better then geno , then we give it one more shot lol. Worst case we have geno starting again, best case we have a solid 27 year old qb and everything changes

@juunit @jdb4@Bent@jdub@Pat d

Maybe, but we all know Reed is not a long term solution. Idzik has already proven that he will not follow conventional wisdom.

I'm on record saying I want the pick to be Cooks but after watching Pryor, I can see them envisioning him like Earl Thomas.

juunit

@jdb4 @juunit@Bent@jdub@Pat d

I hope not. Nothing to do with Pryor, that'd just be a bad allocation of resources. Allen and Reed are more than fine at safety.

It will not be popular on draft day but I can really see Idzik pulling the trigger on Calvin Pryor.

Robert Woods is gonna be good and he came out just last year. But, the "this entire school can't ever produce a good X" is a bad policy to follow anyway.

@Pat d What is the last great receiver that came out of USC?  Do not draft Lee, he has bust written all over him.

juunit

@Pat d

Solomon Patton > Cooks.

Dude was ridiculously underutilized at Florida. Never got to play until his senior year, and his QBs blew chunks. Even got snubbed from a combine invite. Actually, lots of deserving seniors did this year.

Pat d
Pat d

I don't want to make it sound that I don't like Cooks. He is undersized WR that is shifty and hard to defend but not as fast as you would like. I believe he could be had by moving back in the 1st round.

Pat d
Pat d

There is no way Cooks is BPA at 18. Lee was hurt 2013. There is no reason to think he won't recover.

Evans and Lee are better than Cooks.
