Link: The Idzik-Alderson Connection

Jed Hughes, who led the Jets in their search and ultimate hiring of general manager John Idzik, presented some interesting parallels today between Dartmouth graduates Idzik and current Mets general manager Sandy Alderson.
While it sounds more like a champion piece for his clients, which in it’s most raw form is, I do feel more confident in Idzik after watching Sandy Alderson work his magic. Although their recorded hasn’t reflected it, the Mets have greatly improved their payroll capabilities and improved their farm system to the point that they have a very real chance to contend in the near future and perhaps even this year. What makes Alderson’s run even more impressive is that the Mets have had much more severe payroll issues (Hello Jason Bay and Bobby ****** Bonilla) than the Jets and less talented players at key positions.
Alderson’s tenure has by no means been perfect, as the Mets look to get over .500 in the standings for the first time in the Sandy era but, it’s fair to say that he has set them up to be successful in the coming years and Idzik’s own successes with various organizations, including his time as assistant general manager with the Super Bowl winning Tampa Bay Buccaneers and as senior director of operations with the Cardinals, should inspire confidence that he can be successful in an intense and competitive market (/knocks furiously on wood).
