With three days remaining until the Jets fly to Detroit for their first preseason action, Rex Ryan has announced Mark Sanchez will start against the Lions.
Ryan noted we will get an extended look at the first-team offense to accommodate Geno Smith so both quarterbacks get reps with the first-team. Ryan was unsure how the reps would be split.
Eric Weeks, TheJetsBlog.comThis shouldn’t come as much of a surprise and is by no means a reflection of who is currently in the lead. In the marketed “competition” with Kellen Clemens, the veteran Clemens, got the nod to open against the St. Louis Rams and Sanchez later came in. Rex is using the same method here.
The only difference four years later is the competition is close with neither men having separated themselves from the other. For the Jets, that means they need all the in-game intel they can gather from both men. The Jets don’t want to come to a decision based on practices alone and anoint a starter week one of the preseason.
The more information they have, the better. Fans might not like but Idzik isn’t the type of person to do things half-assed.
