Todd McShay released his projections for the first two rounds of next month’s NFL Draft today. For the Jets it’s all about the defense as he goes with Barkevious Mingo and Margus Hunt in rounds one and two.
Analysis: Mingo’s ideal fit is at right end in a 4-3 system, where he can put his hand in the dirt and explode upfield after the quarterback. However, the Jets need an edge rusher more than anything, and that’s what Mingo does best. He is also capable of dropping into coverage when asked, and I believe people will be pleasantly surprised by his pass-rush production in the NFL compared to what he did in 2012 at LSU.
McShay didn’t perform an analysis for the second round selections however, snagging the 6’8″ 227 pound Hunt in the second round would add yet another fearsome presence to the Jets’ defensive line. Add in Mingo, or Jordan, Jones or whomever, at linebacker and the Jets’ defense could very well be a force to reckon with.
If the Jets are truly prepared to move on from Revis then this pairing by McShay makes a lot more sense as they would need to establish a pass rush to, in part, cover their deficiencies in the secondary. Even if this isn’t about the secondary, the Jets need to desperately replace their depleted linebacker corp and Hunt, while a defensive lineman, could serve as an interchangable piece in Ryan’s defense after Rex worked him out as a linebacker at his Pro Day.
