NFL: New York Jets at Atlanta Falcons

No plea deal for Goodson

Mike Goodson appeared in Superior Court in New Jersey on Monday, but there is no plea deal currently on the table for him (Horowitz, April 2).

He was previously offered a plea deal of a three-year prison sentence, which he would have to serve one year before being eligible for parole, the report said. Goodson rejected the offer.

Goodson was indicted on second dress unlawful possession of a weapon — for the loaded gun in his car — and fourth degree prohibited weapons and devices — for the hollow-point bullets (TJB, November 7).

The 3 teams that know DJax the best passed on him.

This is stupid. Cut him. Can't believe we didn't call DJax over some gang rumors but we still have a guy with guns on our roster. Cut him.

Insted of debating the whys, wherefores of law, why would a millionaire, or millionaire-to-be. find himself in this self-destructing

predicament?

Reading these comments the comprehension level is really low. GOODSON PLEADS NOT GUILTY...

And since he's not using a public defender I assume his lawyer is decent. He was offered a plea deal of three years which would be about one year of time actually served and he turned it down. Now with a decent lawyer why would you do this-because you have evidence that the gun found in the car was not yours.

Man, and all this time I thought living like a gangster was a good idea.

Goodson is sitting as a passenger drunk in a car with a loaded gun in the glove & he's got some weed on him? Unless the DA has proof that Goodson owned the gun, what is the prosecutor hoping for? Maybe the DA has some evidence that we don't know about, but being a drunk passenger is not a felony, nor is a small amount of weed.

If tannanbaum would of had this enormous cap and 12 pics. he be broke by now and overdrawn lol but Rivas, Cromartie, DJX and Chris Johnson be on the team. Dam with that group Vick or Geno  at QB  SB would can be a reality.

I suspect that the evidence and facts are in Goodson's favor. The reason I say this is I don't think the Jets would have restructured his deal if this were an open-and-shut case. They likely would have just cut him and pursued some recourse for recovering the bonus / cap space.

Again, I am forming my opinion based on this front office's actions, not based on a legal opinion.

@Lloyd Jay Reife  he's not the only person to find be drunk in the passenger seat of a car

He's doing it because he wants a better deal. When they say 3 but you may only serve 1, if it ain't in writing you can end up doing the max...Often dudes change attorneys because they are unwilling to except what there attorney is telling them

@WW85  Hollow points are the big issue I believe based off some conversations with my pig brother ( jk , he is a cop, but hes always been a pig !)

It all comes down to who rented the car, and if his fingerprints are on the gun. If his cousin asked him to put the gun in the glove box and he did his fingerprints will be on the gun and unless his cousin confesses he's a goner. If he rented the car that ties him to the gun and he's a goner. I'd guess that he's gone. Its safer that way.

@WW85  NJ treats a small amount of weed like you've committed genocide, though.

He did a decent job before getting hurt. Hopefully this off the field crap works out in his favor. If he's health the Jets should hold on to him and not pick Chris Johnson. Time will tell.

Who's got more in the tank?

@Laurence Alonzo Toppin IV  I don't think there's much chance of him getting convicted, based on what we know about it. There's very little evidence of any wrongdoing on his part (other than having a little bit of Weed, but that's not even a felony). For him to be proven guilty, in my opinion, there would need to be a part of the story that hasn't gotten out to the media yet, which is certainly possible, but it seems really unlikely.

@Tyrone Garcia

And next yr we could release Brick, Mo and Mangold because there is no way we could pay them their next contract.

The $30 Mil in Cap room is a little misleading.  I believe that we are trying to rollover the Max.  So that would be $14 mil. So the remaining usable Cap is only about $16 Mil.  While that is still a lot, it is not as much as many would have you to believe.  I think there will be some quality guy fall through the cracks late and Idzik is the kind of guy that will snatch those guys up.

@Tyrone Garcia  CJ1K hasn't been released yet, but La Canfora is convinced that the Jets will "pounce" on him as soon as he is. If the Jets do sign him, they'd have landed the top WR, QB, and RB in FA. I'd still be disappointed about the CB situation, Idizk could have and should have done more in that area, but I'm also willing to see what happens with the draft and with the 2nd round of FA (camp cuts).

juunit

What are the new terms? Maybe they're just protecting themselves from paying him until he gets on the field or goes to jail and gets cut.

harold
harold

@davidus1

Actually they need to keep him on the roster to recover the bonus money if they chose to go that route.  The restucture made him easier to cut with no cap implications if convicted.

@davidus1  I really doubt the FO has access to discovery or Goodson's lawyers.

Lloyd Jay Reife
Lloyd Jay Reife

@Brian Serviss  Oh good, that makes him not guilty.  I think his lawyers should be aware of that fact.

It also takes away the stigma of rich young athletes getting into senseless trouble.

@metsjetsdu @WW85  We've had this conversation a few times, but you may be confusing them with "cop killer" armor piercing bullets.  Hollow points are the opposite - they wouldn't do jack against armor, but are used BY cops so that they don't exit the body of the intended target and hit someone else.

@Brendan Small weed can't be a felony in NJ, though...can it?  If the DA can prove that the gun was his, then Goodson will go to prison. Not sure how the DA will prove that, though

Vincent Winner

@__fense @Laurence Alonzo Toppin IV  I agree.  It wasn't his car and the gun was in the glove box.  Additionally, I'm hearing that his lawyer will argue that the police did not have a warrant or permission to open the glove compartment, so the gun and bullets are not admissible.

@jsadolph

Not sure what you are talking about in this rant about cutting Mangold, Brick and Mo?

We are projected to have about 75.5 million in projected cap charges.  Cap projected to be around 140 million.

Not sure what math you are using.

@funkymonk @Tyrone Garcia  I know Idzik is getting all the hits or plaudits for the moves here but I don't believe for a second Rex isn't having some input.  Rex knows what kind of players he wants for his system and despite their profile, he may have thought some of the other guys were great fits for his D.

Its kind of hard to insist Idzik is being cheap when he is paying Patterson almost as much as Cro got from the Cardinals.  Bottom line, Cro wasn't all that good in this D last year.

davidus1
davidus1

@harold  Maybe. I'm not a cap expert. But I also don't understand the concept of "they need to keep him on the roster to recover the bonus money". I'm sure there was some article somewhere that stated that, but I don't get it.

davidus1
davidus1

@williamg1 @davidus1 Of course they don't have access to discovery. But they do have access to Goodson and I imagine his lawyer as well. I'm sure they have a very good understanding of Goodson's legal team's position. They also have their own lawyers who help them form opinions. In other words, they are infinitely more informed than we are. And their informed actions are what lead me to my conclusion.

@jroc @Disgruntled Jets Fan @Brendan  There's no such thing.  They would be separate charges.  Firearm possession has a wide variety of legality across different states, as does weed possession.  In some places like Washington and Colorado, both are perfectly legal, even together!

It's possession under 50 grams in nj it's a slap on the wrist even though it shouldn't even be illegal the gun that's the hairy part

@WW85 I was just making a joke that they throw people in jail cells for a dime bag.

I agree with your assessment of the case, though. Unless they convinced the driver to try and point the finger, not sure what they hope to prove.

@WW85 @Brendan  Less than 5oz (which is what the police report said he had) can't be a felony in NJ.

@davidus1

As in the Vick case the Falcons kept him on the roster so they could attempt to recover previously paid bonus.  If the team cuts the palyer the team forfeits the right to pursue the money.

williamg1

@davidus1 @williamg1  I have a hard time that the defense team is going to provide detailed information of his case to the Jets.
