Projecting the Jets 2014 final roster Part II: Offense

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

After three preseason games and the Jets first round of cuts to trim the roster to 75, here’s our thoughts on the Jets final roster.  First up, the offense…

USATSI_8033799_110579513_lowresQuarterback [3]
1. Geno Smith
2. Michael Vick
3. Matt Simms

Change: Swap Simms for Boyd

We know who the starter is now, which is good and with Mike Vick as the team’s backup don’t be surprised if the Jets consider carrying just two quarterbacks into the season to make room elsewhere on the roster.  Still, I think the Jets won’t want to take chances and will make Matt Simms their third man.  He’s played markedly better than Tajh Boyd, who might be a practice squad addition at this point.  There’s more upside with Boyd for the future, but for now he’s not supplanted Simms.

Offensive Line [8]
LT: D’Brickashaw Ferguson
LG: Brian Winters
C: Nick Mangold
RG: Willie Colon
RT: Breno Giacomini
Swing Guard: Oday Aboushi
Swing Tackle: Ben Ijalana
Backup Center: Dalton Freeman

Change: None

The Jets seem dialed in on their offensive line and the right side is shaping up very nicely between Colon and Giacomini.  This is a gritty group that could be dominant in run-blocking specifically.  We know the Jets like both Will Campbell and Dakota Dozier and they’ve moved along nicely this summer, but this group has to be about fielding the best unit overall.  Carrying nine lineman into the just won’t be feasible this year with serious concerns in the secondary and strong depth on defense. Among their backups, only Ijalana can’t play two different positions.  Aboushi can play at guard and tackle and Freeman can play at center and guard.  That’s the versatility the team needs at this unit.

USATSI_7452383_110579513_lowresWide Receivers [7]
1. Eric Decker
2. Jeremy Kerley
3. David Nelson
4. Stephen Hill
5. Jacoby Ford
5. Saalim Hakim
6. Jalen Saunders
7. Greg Salas

Change: Evans moved to IR, Salas makes roster

Update: With the news that the Jets have cut Jacoby Ford today, we’ve added Saalim Hakim into the mix as the team’s designated returner on kicks and on special teams.  We know that the Jets love Hakim’s speed.  Ford had an offensive pass interference penalty and a muffed punt in the team’s dress rehearsal Friday night against the Giants.  It was enough for the Jets to send him packing.

I know how crazy it is to even consider carrying seven receivers, but it is almost impossible for me to see how the Jets do it with less.  The top of the roster looks pretty solid, but it gets tricky once we hit the Stephen Hill portion.  Hill’s roster viability is being questioned, though I don’t see it.  Saunders’ health concerns might make him a Non-Football related scratch from the roster.  We’re sure the Jets would like to bring him along thanks to his punt return abilities, but we’re sure the Jets are doing everything they can to treat him properly before making that decision.

Should Saunders not make the roster due to health, look for Clyde Gates or Saalim Hakim to slide into that last spot.

Tight Ends [3]
1. Jeff Cumberland
2. Jace Amaro
3. Zach Sudfeld

Change: None

Sudfield isn’t going to push anyone out of the way for reps on the roster this year, but he’s a compelling red zone target for a team looking to get bigger at every receiver position.  Amaro had a nice week, capping his third preseason game with a touchdown from Geno Smith.  The targets are there for Amaro to soak up in this offense and the more comfortable he gets, the more he’ll see.

USATSI_8019131_110579513_lowresRunning Backs [4]
1. Chris Johnson
2. Chris Ivory
3. Bilal Powell
4. Tommy Bohanon

Change: None

There’s no reason to think that this team won’t bring a fullback with them into the regular season.  The mix of Ivory, Johnson and Powell is going to yield dividends for this team.  While the Giants first-team defense looks spotty, we still think that this week’s show from the running game is much of what we can expect from this team this season.  While no one back might carry the ball 20 times a game; between the three of them don’t be surprised if the group carries the ball 35 times or more a game this season.

So who's roster should the Jets's secondary dept be scouting for releases?

I agree with everything in this Article except for Boyd having more upside than Simms. Boyd may be younger, but not by much, But Simms has more to offer in the near term and long term, at this point Simms is more developed and experienced, but also Simms is more accurate and has a cannon for an arm, Boyd is more mobile and has alot of character but If I was to chose between the two I would definately go with Simms for now and for the long term. I was excited about Ford coming to NY but since then hasn't shown much, so good move on letting him go, and I'm very impressed with Saalim, I hope he continues improving and MM can get him some plays on offense.

get either saunders, quincy or dozier on the IR with the injury they're going to unfortunately sustain this week.

Or carry 2 QBs and 8 WRS. I read that Simms can go back to the PS. Seems weird but might make sense, though 2 QBs on the PS would be strange.

well ford out of the picture, i think gates is next.  I thought there would be more room for another OL?  maybe i'm bad at math or something.

I like Dozier a year on PS or even action in case of injuries will do him good this year.  It certainly helped aboushi, and even winters has progressed.

We've got an interesting situation now with a lot of development OLs who seem to be coming along nicely. Are they really going to cut Dozier, their 4th round pick who they actually like? I think Dozier is quite possibly a "scholarship" candidate like the guys last year. I think Hakim is a wildcard. He seems to have carved out a real niche on specials. Could he slip in as the final WR, particularly now that Saunders has medical issues?

Jets release WR Jacoby Ford, WR Michael Campbell, TE Colin Anders, FB Chad Young, DE Anthony Grady and CB Ras-I Dowling. #nyj

The beat writers seem to be putting out some flattering articles lately. What gives?

Hakim has been far better on special teams than anything Jacoby or Hill have done so far offensively.  Idzik will make room for a new better player real soon.

jetsjerk
jetsjerk

...and cut Wilson already!

@bharper42  I just don't think they can cut Dozier to put him o the PS. Somebody will pick him up. Last year the Jets kept Campbell and Aboushi on the 53 man roster but they were never active for any games. I see the same with Dozier.

Jacoby Ford gone. Grady, Dowling, Chad Young, Colin Anderson, Michael Campbell.

@levi Can't knock 'em down until you've built them up first...

@jetsjerk

Maybe Hakim can play CB and take Wilsons place as well!

Cutting a serviceable player without obtaining a better replacement would be idiotic.

@jetsjerk

Yeah, that makes sense! Our CB position is decimated by injuries and you want to cut Wilson!

Bent
Bent moderator

@levi @harold Yeah, he's been dealing with groin issues.

Wonder if the Jets are on the hook for an injury settlement.  They may have a waiver in his contract.

Bent

@a57se @jetsjerk He's broken up a lot of passes in camp.

Unfortunately they were all intended for him.

jetsjerk
jetsjerk

@Disgruntled Jets Fan  Serviceable?  My Grandmother is more serviceable... with her neck brace on at least she has an excuse for not turning her head to look for the ball!  Serviceable Penalties should be his nickname!

No, he's not serviceable. Trade him and Hill for a real CB!

jetsjerk
jetsjerk

@a57se @jetsjerk yeah, he sucks.  Soon Cinci, tampa Hawks and many others will have to realese some far better CB's.  Wilson has sucked for far too long.

@hazard2012 @Karl Pacelli @bharper42 I agree 100% Dozier was very well regarded going into the draft and considering he has had to change positions he hasn't done any thing to hurt his stock in his limited playing time. I'm hearing a lot of positive stuff regarding Aboushi coming from the jets this off season but when i watch him play i keep seeing the penalty's and missed blocks that kept him off the field all of last season. i think we would have more luck sneaking Aboushi onto the practice squad than Dozier even though Aboushi might be slightly ahead in terms of readiness at this time. Obviously with Fords release it looks like Hakim's ability on special teams might keep around.

levi
levi

@Bent  I figured he must have been hurt or they would keep him around with all the other CBs being out.

Bent
Bent moderator

@Disgruntled Jets Fan Ford is unlucky if the muff played into his axing.  Ford's never been a good punt returner and if Saunders wasn't hurt he wouldn't have been in that role.

He hasn't impressed as a receiver though, I guess.  Or even as a kick returner.  Hakim, I guess, is going to get a long look in that role now with punt return duties shared between Kerley, Wilson or even Decker until Saunders is back.

a57se
a57se

@jetsjerk @a57se

Really? I'd love to know who they are gonna release that is so good?

Bent

@levi @Bent Kept getting hurt on special teams so they couldn't even get him in the game for a look at him at corner.  Must've been frustrating.

bharper42
bharper42

@Bent @Disgruntled Jets Fan please not decker and kerley on punt returns.  If you have any way of getting a word into the coaching staff's ear bent tell them we can't afford for those two to go down because of PR.

@Bent @Disgruntled Jets Fan I see Hakim making the roster.  He has serious speed and doesn't mind sticking his nose into a tackle.

We need that on specials.

levi

@Bent  Frustrating for everyone involved Im sure.

Hows Berry looking in Cleveland?

Bent

@bharper42 @Bent @Disgruntled Jets Fan I agree with you, unless it's a "fair catch an important punt inside the 20 on a windy day" situation.

Hopefully Saunders will take this role.

levi
levi

@bharper42  Kerley pretty much just fair catches unless there is a ton of real estate in front of him anyway.

Bent

@boomer @Bent @Disgruntled Jets Fan I saw the best punt coverage I think I've ever seen from the Bucs the other day.  The return man caught it and was like surrounded by six guys who all beat their blockers.

Bent

@levi @Bent He missed a game injured but was back this week.  You'll have to wait for expendables to see how he did cuz no spoilerz.

He should make that team, I reckon.

levi
levi

@Bent  haha were they that good or the other team that bad?

levi

@Bent  Fair enough. I always liked him but again thats another guy who is always hurt.

Bent

@levi @Bent I don't know because it was just a one-off play I happened to see while looking for something in particular but I might have to go back and review the rest of those teams' punts throughout preseason.

@levi @Bent Trufant is there too.  He's missed the last two games injured as well!

@Bent  I see Trufant is listed as the #2 LCB.
