This morning the hire of Mike Pettine by the Bills was made official per ESPN.
Former Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine, Ryan’s right-hand man for four seasons, was hired by the Bills for the same position, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported Wednesday morning.
Ryan and Pettine agreed to part ways. Pettine’s contract with the Jets is expiring; he declined an extension at the start of the season.
Pettine was sufficiently ready to leave that the first team that made him an offer he jumped at, even if it was a divisional rival.
One more thing, remember when Pettine called it ‘overblown’ that Ryan was taking more control of the offense this year?
No one will ever know all the reasons that the Jets and Pettine parted ways, but I’d encourage you to go back and read this article from over a year ago from over a year ago to learn some more about their dynamics.
“Rex has an emotional side and sometimes gets a little out of control,” safety Jim Leonhard says. “Pettine and D.T. are able to kind of balance him out.”
It’s an interesting read, and gives me hope that DT will help to balance Rex in the absence of Pettine.
Fly Like a Rocket — Doug Marrone has quickly assembled one of the most intriguing NFL coaching staffs I’ve seen in the last five years. It’s either going to the moon or it is going to crash spectacularly.
Free Agent Flow — There are a number of players on defense that won’t be back or will be cut. Most players like to play in a scheme they are already comfortable with and so as Rich Cimini points out, Buffalo is a very likely landing spot for guys like Bart Scott, Bryan Thomas, Mike DeVito, Calvin Pace, LaRon Landry, Yeremiah Bell and Eric Smith … maybe even Pouha?
Give and Take — Watching the chess match now between Pettine and Rex Ryan is going to be very fun in coming years. The two know each other so well, it’s going to come down to talent and their team’s respective offenses capabilites.
