Quote: McCoy on Vick

He’s going to be the Jets’ starting QB. He’s way better than Geno Smith. Way better. That’s no contest.”

-Eagles RB LeSean McCoy on Michael Vick, to Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post

McCoy knows everything Vick brings to the table, but he's witnessed very little of Geno. The guy has limited credibility to make an informed comparison. shady being shady

The scouting report on Geno before the draft was that he wasn't ready to start on the NFL right away. But Sanchez got hurt and Geno was thrown into the fire. If Vick beats out Geno, it's ok. Sitting and watching gives you perspective. Look at what happened last year. Vick beats out Foles. Of course Vick gets hurt and the rest is history. We can only hope that is the scenario here.

i wouldnt mind either of these guys starting. I don't know if Vick is as dynamic a runner as he used to be but Geno isn't a slouch. Geno actually appeared to be the smarter runner. i'm not sure vick can improve as a passer this late in his career, but i believe geno can. i'm amazed at the Jets fans that dont acknowledge that Geno was trending up. he was more decisive once his weapons returned.i would be comfortable with either starting. feels good since i havent been able to say that in years.

I would bet you that if you took a vote among NFL players who was a better QB Mike Vick or Geno that the answer would be Vick by a landslide.....especially if you polled players who played against BOTH of them,,,

"Geno had rough times last season, his first.  EVERYONE agrees he had no weapons"

Not everyone.

“The guys we had last year were more than viable options. I think it all came down to me, honestly.” - Geno Smith last week.

@jake100  Some kind of glitch.  It went up to 18,000 the other day when in reality there was like 50.

Wouldn't begin to disagree with your premise, but that can't and shouldn't be the issue.   Vick is nothing more than a caretaker; an insurance policy against Geno going bust and the whole season going bust with him.

The issue isn't who's better now...but who can be better next year and the year after.  Vick isn't that future, and the Jets very much need to determine if Geno can be...especially with a rookie campaign under his belt and surrounded with some weapons on O.

If Geno proves he can run this O and minimize the TO's then he'll have a future here.   If not the Jets will use Vick until they get their new franchise QB next year via FAcy or the draft.

@bradysucks  I would bet that if you took a vote among NFL players who was a better player at any position a starter on any other team and a starter on the Jets it would be the starter on the other team by a landslide. Players don't actually take the time to care about stuff like that for any position but their own, because any time they spend watching football that doesn't matter to their game would be better spent watching tape that is relevant. Because of this, most NFL players just repeat whatever BS they heard on ESPN.

@bradysucks  How man times do we have to have the "NFL players don't really know how good other NFL players really are" conversation?

@bradysucks if Vick where that good he would have a better resume, he is a flash in the pan, probably better backup than starter to fill for an injured starting QB till the starter got healthy

@bradysucks  Easy to say when u have Djax, Mccoy, Riley vs injured Santonio, injured Kerley, injured Nelson. Crappy Hill. C'mon Man!

@bradysucks  So if we have a Super Bowl QB on the roster, your words, why in the world would you want to trade multiple draft choices for Johnny Football?

Well that's why l love Geno. Shows the kind of guy he is. Humble and talks his teammates up. Takes responsibility for poor play. This is why he will suceed

@Hazard2012 If Vick > Geno by 10% or more in camp/preseason, he should start even if he isn't the future. I'm rooting for Geno, but the better QB should play.

Hope you're right.   Even if Vick wins the starting job the likelihood of him staying healthy all season is zero, so anything is possible.

@Hazard2012 @boomer @WW85  Yes, you're a stupid cable TV commercial.

Seriously, I don't think the Jets are down on Geno and I think they are very aware of the rushed Sanchez debacle. Remember, Sanchez had most likely beaten out Geno for the starters job last fall before Sanchez's injury.  Geno was the starter by default.

Barring something unforeseen which is a pretty dumb thing to say in the NFL I think Geno is going to be the starting QB for the Jets for sometime to come. He may not beat out Vick this fall but he will eventually and he will be here for a while.

Hazard2012

@boomer @Hazard2012 @WW85

Not saying Geno's career is over if Vick beats him out, just that once doubts arise in an organization's mind about a player they're hard to erase.   When you have doubts to look for alternatives and backups...and when you look for alternatives you usually find them...and the new shiny toy is the one you usually play with.

...I'm beginning to sound like that stupid cable TV commercial...but you get the idea.

@Hazard2012 @boomer @WW85  Yeah I just don't buy that if Vick beats him out this fall Geno's career is over.  So he sits for a few games, learns the game behind someone who has some time in both the pro game and MM's offense.  Nothing wrong with that.

Just because expectations have changed with the fan base and maybe even in the NFL it doesn't mean Geno can't play.  The game has only gotten faster and more complex in the last decade but somehow rookie QBs are supposed to be more advanced?

Not buying it and I don't think the Jets are either.

Hazard2012

@boomer @Hazard2012 @WW85

I'm afraid the more recent trend is the yardstick today.    Players, QB's, especially, don't have the time to develop they used to.

Geno's in an odd place because he's already played a full season.  He won't be allowed rookie mistakes, and the likely addition of weapons will also remove another excuse. Expectations will be higher.

Geno showed flashes of being both good and very bad last year.  Losing the starting job to Vick will be a sign he's still not ready, and I'm not sure how long a leash Rex will give him when he's himself is under pressure to win.

boomer
boomer

@Hazard2012 @WW85  Why?  Its only in the last couple years that the rookie QBs have ever been considered as full time starters.  It used to be QBs, even guys like Vick, saw limited duty and learned the game before having the reigns turned over to them.

Geno has shown at times that he has the ability to be a good NFL QB.  No reason to hit the eject button if he takes a little time to learn the game.

WW85
WW85

@Hazard2012 Vick just may be better than Geno today, not in the future. Vick's first couple of years in the NFL were comparable to Geno. I think Geno can be really good. I hope he wins the job. I'd love to see him with a full 16 games & practice with quality WRs week in & out. It's impressive he went 8-8 with the weapons he had to deal with last year. Geno works hard & I believe he is improving.

Hazard2012
Hazard2012

@WW85 @Hazard2012

Agree, but if Vick's the better QB then the Jets need a new starting QB of the future, don't they?   That's what has to be determined this year...maybe even in pre-season.

Brendan

@Steven Windeler I believe there was talk about the "idiots calling the shots" or something to that effect?

That was before the world-class backpedaling, though.

@bradysucks  I'm pretty sure the Jets are allowed to give him another contract if they want to.

And if you want to see real suck go take a look at Vick's first couple years.  Without his legs he was a disaster.
