Mark Sanchez has decided to undergo surgery on his torn labrum, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.
Update – 2:44 p.m.: Sanchez has not yet decided to have surgery, according to Brian Costello of the New York Post.
The surgery will result in four to six months of rehabilitation before he can play, if and when Sanchez decides to have the surgery.
Sanchez was placed on the injured reserve with the designation to return this season.

Rap has been on top of the Sanchez story for a while now, so where there’s smoke, there’s probably fire.
Assuming Sanchez does opt for surgery at Rap indicates, it would effectively end any chance at returning with the Jets in 2013. If this story isn’t true as Costello states, then Sanchez might yet try to get healthy enough to play and be available for the Jets when his stint on the I/R ends. Based on Rex’s comments about the team’s quarterback yesterday, having Sanchez as a “break the glass” option might some small consolation for Rex Ryan.
Even if Sanchez could get healthy, the Jets might never opt to play him this season, thereby muddying the waters at the team’s QB spot. Either way it is very likely that Sanchez has played his last snap with the Jets and is doing whatever he thinks is best to boost his chances at competing for a starting spot somewhere else in 2014.
