The Jets are still mum on the status of Mark Sanchez, other than calling him day-to-day.
Ryan said that the team will discuss Sanchez, and other injuries, on Wednesday, when the official injury report is released.
“I’m not going to go into what-ifs,” Ryan said, when discussing when Sanchez would be need to be throwing to be able to start. “We’ll have an excellent grasp of it by Wednesday. That’s when we’ll be comfortable giving out injury info.”
On the report that Sanchez will miss Week 1, Ryan wouldn’t reveal anything new.
“I think there’s a lot of speculation out there,” he said. “Again, only he people in the building know all the situations. T think as we get going as far as injuries, a lot of things will be answered on Wednesday.”
So, if Sanchez can’t go, how does Geno Smith look?
“He’s had a good week of practice and we’ll see where he is from there — and see where all our team is — when we’re ready to kick this thing off against Tampa,” the head coach said.
And if not Geno, what about Matt Simms as the Jets QB?
“I certainly can see where you can make a case for it,” Ryan said. “He had a tremendous preseason game and it’s really elevated his stock.”
Asked when the team would name their starting quarterback, Ryan told everyone to keep waiting.
“The competition is ongoing until there’s an announcement,” he said.
Ryan also told reporters that the team hasn’t made their final decisions on cutting their roster down to 53 players yet.
The deadline to cut the roster is Saturday at 6 p.m. and Ryan said that the team is “still meeting and making those decisions.”
