Rex Ryan did call the Jets quarterbacks “an impressive group of men over there” but won’t divulge until Thursday which of those impressive men will be the team’s starting quarterback in the preseason finale against the Eagles.
Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.comRyan also told reporters today that it is within the realm of possibility that he won’t name his Week 1 starter until the day of the game against the Buccaneers. That seems unlikely, but if Rex did that, I would glady laud him for his brass balls. Preseason is one thing, but in-season game preparation is a whole other animal. It would mean big adjustments to the practice rotation during the week leading up to a game and with limited time allowed on the field, it could make a bad situation worse.
Sanchez didn’t practice today in Florham Park, and if Geno plays on Thursday it would likely be a pretty quick succession to McElroy and/or Simms. Today, McElroy declined to talk about his health status.
While the decision to delay naming his starter will (of course) be decried. But all the same … well done, Rex. The Jets head coach seems to be taking a page from Santonio Holmes’ New York Times Bestseller “Trollne Time: How to Slow the Media with your Troll”
