Roster News: Jets Sign Hilliard, Waive Turner

Bent , TheJetsBlog.com

Dennis Waszak reports via twitter:

#Jets signed FB Lex Hilliard & waived WR Patrick Turner. Also signed WR Jordan White to PS & cut DB Donnie Fletcher from PS

Analysis: Hilliard played extensively with Tony Sparano in Miami, mostly as either a fullback or as a halfback in two back sets. He’s more of a versatile hybrid fullback rather than your John Conner-style pure blocking back, only tipping the scales at 228 pounds. However, he only handled the ball 21 times last year (five catches, 16 carries). Some may think this could spell the end of the line for John Conner, who was injured again in last week’s game. However, maybe Sparano is planning to run more three back sets and put two backs in the backfield on passing downs rather than relying on their tight ends to pass block. Hilliard was most recently with the Patriots, but only saw action on nine snaps.

Turner’s release is surprising for two reasons, the first being that it came before Clyde Gates and the second being that the Jets only currently have three healthy receivers (Gates, Chaz Schilens and Jeremy Kerley) – although Stephen Hill is expected back soon. However, he did struggle on Sunday and he’s a guy who has been on and off the roster several times in his Jets career, so this is nothing new.

Late in the season, there was specifically ONE player I tuned in to watch; and WHY I'm NOT hearing his name among those Phil wants back, on a larger scale, is Alexey Shved! WTF?! He can play and guard 3 positions, gets to the foul line second only to Melo, passes very well and rebounds well; really think his return is a no-brainer, bc I don't see anyone out there left, whose better

@MEASURE 4 MEASURE Agreed man! He's a nice big guard for the triangle too. His flaws were exposed playing so many minutes with that weak roster last year, but he's so damn fast, can up the game's tempo nice, and was exciting to watch.. I would love to see him back!

@MEASURE 4 MEASURE I totally agree. I have been watching all the news articles for his name to come up. It will be a grave mistake on the Knicks' part. I just don' t get how they don't see how important it is to resign him. I am still holding up hope. The PG position has been neglected by the Knicks for a long time. They finally found a couple of good ones - Lin, Shved, but couldn't help themselves. Shved can get into the lane at ease, can take it all the way to the hoop, pass well, score well, very good 3pt shooter - I mean, what else do they want? He is tall, has long arms, still young. Damn it! I will be very upset if they let him go.

Would be nice to have Smith, but with Lopez, Porzingis, and O'quinn aboard as big men, you need a nice scorer like Shved to take pressure off Carmelo.

So why not bring back Lance Thomas & also Alexy Shevd

@Brutus Gorum ehh Lance Thomas seems pretty disposable. Shved makes a lot of sense though!

Article is wrong about the salary cap.

Don't know why journalist can't get this right.
They just constantly repeat what they read elsewhere, right or wrong.
The signed contracts cannot be merely divided to find the 1st year cap hit.
Every contract escalates 10% per year thus the actual 1st year cap hits are:
Afflalo 2/16= 7.65mil
Lopez 4/54= 11.65mil
Williams 2/10= 4.75mil
O’Quinn 4/16= 3.45mil
Total 27.50mil
Since the knicks will be signing 5 free agents they will have $30,153,577 to spend.
30.154mil-27.4mil= 2.75mil
Knicks have 2.75 left to spend Plus the 2.73 Exception

@Gregori Saturno So basically it means :

We can sign 2 players at 2.75M and 2.73M respectively - right?

In addition, we can spray a boat load of vet minimum unless we can trade Calderon to make more cap room available.

Can we exceed the cap to sign our own free agents (the ones for which we have bird rights)

Please help

@jeandd323 @Gregori Saturno

don't know, i think that has something to do with whether knicks have the Bird rights to that particular free agent.

for instance i just read that the knicks do not have bird rights to jason smith.

Need to resign Shved! he would be the likely 2nd scorer aside from Affalo

Williams got a 3 year deal for 21 mil as for Bass im not sure his deal.

In other news Jackson deal with Pistons is 5 years 80 mil

I'm cautiously excited about the upcoming season.

Lopez

Porzingis

Melo

Afflalo

Calderon

2nd

O'Quinn

Williams

Early

Galloway

Grant

This is not a bad team. If they can master system bball (triangle) they may surprise people.

I say 35 wins and challenging for 8th seed.

We finally have a young team with stability, upside and flexibility next offseason. If this team can gel, make the playoffs, and play well once there, we have the ability to add major players next offseason where our main weaknesses are. But hopefully this team gives us a team worth rooting for this year.....

"Cautiously excited" is a good way to put it. It may be that Melo starts at the 4 and Williams at the 3 to start the season, with Porzingis easing his way into a more prominent role. If Afflalo become a reliable #2, Calderon bounces back, and the rookies meet expectations, I'm thinking between 38 -42 wins and a 7th seed. A major step forward heading into 2016 FA.

We got to half Smith in the middle with that 2nd squad. Him and Quinn of the bench would be beast mode. I see 40, 45 wins if not more...

people and media that are blaming phil are whack jobs. he has been here ONE YEAR. blame dolan for trading half the team for ball hog melo when he could of waited and got him for nothing. melo opted out of his first contract with the knicks anyway and wasn't signing with denver. free agents don't want to come here because they know melo is a ball hog and they know about dolan. are you going to blame phil for not having a first round pick next year. phil did the only thing he could do tank. the ping pong balls didn't fall his way like they did when they got ewing. you have to be very bad to get a franchise player like ewing or okafor. phil did his best to get that player but luck wasn't on his side. but to knock phil after one year is CRAZY.especially someone with 11 rings. i don't care how he got the rings. the knicks haunt got a ring in 43 years.

Who cares we got 2 Beasty 1ST ROUNDERS! We BE GOOD!!!

One of the few consolations the last few days about our pathetic free agency period, was that at least the Lakers were also left out in the cold. Well guess what, they just substantially surpassed our entire talent level IN ONE EFFING DAY!!!!

Hibbert

Lou Williams

Brandon Bass

Kobe

Randle

Russel

I'm just so disgusted right now.

knicks10
knicks10

And it's funny because your convinced that randle and Russell are going to be stars, but we can't give our rookies a break. Who's to say that the laker rookies will b better then ours.

knicks10
knicks10

Hibbert is soft that's why the pacers are getting rid of him. And Lou Williams ain't better then afflalo

starksoakmase
starksoakmase

@bkyguy78 how much did Bass and Williams get? Lopez is better than Hibbert at this point and Afflalo is better than Lou Williams. I would like to know if Bass is making more than Kyle. if it's much more, there really isn't anything to be so upset about....

bkyguy78
bkyguy78

@knicks10 Not convinced at all, but Randle was solid in his short stint and Russel are both already ahead of what we got.

starksoakmase
starksoakmase

@bkyguy78 @starksoakmase yes. lou is an undersized SG that is always hurt. Afflalo is a more efficient scorer, 3pt shooter and better rebounder. And much better defender. much better player actually....

By the time porzingis is in his prime melo will be out of his prime. If anyone on this blog seriously thinks melo is going to win a championship in New York there delusional.

Where not gonna get durant next summer and where not a playoff team this year. The last time the Knicks rebuilt there first good playoff team was full of veterans on a 1 year deal.

If the Knicks where okc and had Westbrook durant ibaka harden and kanter unlike okc we could afford to offer all those players the max and contend for the next 10 years. Okc can't afford to pay all those guys. Same with the bucks when there players are free agents they won't be able to offer all those young players.

Obviously we don't trade melo now but at the trade deadline I bet a team like the lakers or heat will want a player like melo to try and give wade or Kobe one last ring. Maybe u do a 3 team trade it doesn't matter as long as u build the way okc did. With young 20 year olds who will be future stars.

Porzingis and grant is a good starting point. Trading melo will give u 2 more young players like that. So now we have 4 future stars under the age of 22. And over 50 million dollars in cap space next summer. we could than offer 2 players a max contract next summer. We won't get durant but we could get the next level down. With porzingis, grant and the other 2 players we got in the melo trade we will be able to resign all of them when they deserve big contracts and they'll be playing next two the other 2 players we signed this summer.

You will have 4 future 20 year old all stars plus 2 other max players, and Lopez, early, gslloway and oquinn to compete with for the next 10 years.

That's the best way to build a long lasting contender and to get as many good players as possible

@John Munro i will say this 7ft and 3pt shooting will translate immediately to the NBA.  Obv he will be more of a role player but a stretch 4 with a ton of upside is nice to have.

@John Munro Agree w/ most of that although I do think this team is good enough to compete for a 7 or 8 seed this season in a very weak East. Definitely not a contender anytime soon though, and finding a home for Melo at the deadline WOULD be the ideal scenario in my mind.

I guess no david lee. Really wanted him at our starting pf

Sounding less and less likely for Shved coming back. I hope I'm wrong....

1harris1

Which is unfortunate, as he's the only one of these guys who I want to see back.

@1harris1 he may have been the most exciting player on the team last year...and no acknowledgement from Phil ?

Anthony Kunjbehari
Anthony Kunjbehari

@rico @1harris1 Ultimately, I trust that PJ has a sharper talent eye than myself. If he's prioritizing bigs vs. Shved, then so be it.

Perhaps Shved surprises us and signed a league min contract in a week or two.

i want Amundson back.  He did a very nice job for us.  He would be a great backup center to lopez.

donche

We just need 1 of them....trade jose and sign someone else

hashbury

@starksoakmase @donche I would actually prefer Shved to Calderon.  But as you say, no way to get rid of him right now.  Maybe mid season.

donche
donche

With all these contracts given....I think 7 mill for a back up isn't that bad for a playoff team...wizards had rasual butler as a back up pg last year lol

starksoakmase
starksoakmase

@hashbury @starksoakmase @donche The thing to like about Calderon is that he seems to be a good guy to work with the youngins. He seemed to be very vocal and engaged last year. Just hope he bounces back....im still not sold on Shved....

donche
donche

I'd do a sign and trade....Jose for kj McDaniels at 5 mill a year and 3 mill in cap space.

Early/dwill/thanasis/ledo/kj would be a interesting battle for back up minutes

starksoakmase
starksoakmase

@donche seems a bit steep for a 2nd rounder and would leave us very thin at PG. The knicks will go into the season with jose at PG and any chance of them making the playoffs probably hinges on him providing steady play on a young team...

All you Shved heads have me Shved up. Calderon has been a quality NBA starter for what ? 8, 9 years ? Shved has a good month on a dog team and he's the second coming of Oscar Robertson. Clearly Calderon had a rough year but let's not lose our Shveds.
