Ryan, Idzik talk about Patterson, Hill

The departures of cornerback Dmitri Patterson and wide receiver Stephen Hill were the main topics as Jets coach Rex Ryan and GM John Idzik discussed roster moves in a conference call with reporters Monday (Jets, Sept. 1).

Patterson was suspended for missing the Aug. 22 preseason game against the Giants before being released Saturday.

Idzik noted the strained relationship with Patterson, who called the team’s assertion no one had contacted the Jets about Patterson’s absence “completely false” in the media.

Ryan and Idzik discuss the recent release of wide receiver Hill and how his agent has responded to the move.

“We don’t operate too much on statements,” Idzik said. “I prefer direct communication. That way, if something is quoted or is said, especially in this information age when things fly out pretty quickly or are segmented, you always like to hear from the player.

“Suffice it to say, I think he had an open forum here to spill everything out, and then we told him our views as well. In the end we felt it was the best thing for the Jets.”

As for Hill, Ryan said it was not a case of giving up on the player. Rather, it was Hill’s inconsistency and not playing special teams that led to his release.

“We gave Stephen plenty of opportunities, more snaps than any receiver in camp,” Ryan said of Hill,  a second-round draft pick in 2012  “At the end of the day, a lot goes into it. One of them is special teams presence. Stephen never really provided a whole lot of special teams presence, if at all. So some of the guys were probably kept over Stephen for that very fact.”

Ryan was upbeat about the situation at cornerback, despite the uncertain status of Dee Milliner (ankle) and Antonio Allen (concussion) going into next Sunday’s opener against Oakland at MetLife Stadium. The Jets signed Phillip Adams Monday after adding Leon McFadden Sunday.

“I understand where everybody is coming from because we had some injury questions,” Ryan said, “When this thing gets kicked off for real, we absolutely have no excuses.”

I think the way the jets have started their route with picking specific receivers for Morhinweg's system (including releasing Stephen Hill), receivers who don't have to get too much separation like Salas, Nelson, and Decker the ERA of drafting high wide receiver talent especially in the first round has begun. Look towards next year and the year after and the jets even if Ryan is not fired the jets will pick up a specific deep threat with the ability to come back and play the slot (similar to the way the steelers used Emmanuel Brown and Mike Wallace, and the Eagles used Desean Jackson note none of the receivers were drafted in the first round). This is really not the best way to go. Reverting back to the Keyshawn Johnson days.

If we can't beat a lousy team with a first year QB with zero NFL experience, you can forget this season. I look for the Jets to give Carr lots of confusing looks. Carr will almost certainly have a very basic game plan.

If the Jets stuff the run like they should, we should win this game handily.

Prediction:

Jets 24

OAk 10

Just saw some of Carr's preseason highlights playing QB for the Raiders against Seattle. He throws a nice ball. Pre-season doesn't mean much but from what I saw the Jets better not underestimate this guy

"But, no we don’t have any regrets in signing Dimitri. We signed him to come in here and contribute to our secondary, our defense and our team. So, unfortunately it didn’t work out."

"I would call Dimitri Patterson a legitimate cornerback. That’s why we signed him. We liked the player. We interviewed the player. We don’t look back. There are no regrets."

Guys if you think it's bad for us- Buffalo has no 1st rounder next year, huge holes at DB, OL, Manuel looks lost, and Watkins has suffered 2 rib injuries already. I'm watching the week 4 preseason game vs the Bucs and they can't even put up points. Manuel looks gunshy and very inaccurate (vs the TB twos none the less). There's huge cause for concern in Buffalo, especially when your fans are booing in the first quarter and your team is going to be sold.

@Hanknaples we are going to need the replace the entire oline in coming years and teams will not be as WR needy .

@xplr what's so lousy about the oldest team in the league. They know how to win and The Jets have not earned any expected wins but by all means , do so.

@xplr

The way Tony Sparano has had Rex Ryan's number in the past I don't think stuffing the run for the jets will be that easy. Again the jets cannot crush the pocket using the three man front of Richardson, Wilkerson, and Harrison. I don't think Richardson is going to make it this year. We will see how physical he is when he is matched up with a strong offensive line.

@xplr It would be interesting to know what the NFL record is for rookie QBs starting their career on the road. This can't be a high number of Ws.

@Marty Luc Not for that much $$$$.   Mo isn't as good as JJ, so what would he want - 15MM/year?

They've got to pay Snacks & Ellis as well. Suspect that's why they have held on to so much extra cash this year.

@williamg1 He never said the signing turned out to be a good one, just that he doesn't regret it. Hopefully it's because he takes a positive out of it, like better evaluating people in the future.

24-0 at half. It is mostly the starters in, a mix of 1s and 2s.

EDIT- It took them till 6:23 in the third, with the 2s/3s on the field, for the Bills starting offense to score a TD.

17-0 in the middle of 2nd quarter. It's gross in Buffalo. Thank god we play them twice.

@dgdg  I'm quite surprised the Jets haven't fronted Snacks some money....normally guys in his position are happy to take a bit less if they are getting the money early, think the Jets are missing a trick here, I like Idzik but he seems so ponderous in making decisions

@a57se @williamg1 Why would he be fired? He took a team who won 7 games and was over the cap with the worst qb in the league to an 8-8 team missing the playoffs by a game, under the cap by how much? and put is into a great situation not only this season but for the future because were not invested in one player.

Miserable man

@a57se @Cang People are really concerned with us, yet we're probably in the top half of the league in both our situation now and future outlook.

@Alec Wilson @dgdg Agree, if they are paying Snacks anything like the 500k listed in madden, then they have to pay him some.

anybidy could have resolved the cap situation...Tanny set it up to be resolved the way it was.

If you followed this team closely you would already know that.

@a57se @Cang We have tons of young talent on the team that will continue to grow this year. We are not tight on draft picks or salary cap strapped so we can extend the guys we have and draft new talent. So in response, yes, I think we have a great situation for winning now and in the future. It's not all about this year although many will pretend it is. I don't think anyone expects more than 7-9 wins, as long as we see growth from the offense and defense. I think that we finally have stability and talent in the front office, coaching staff, and players that has eluded us for the last few years. I'm pretty damn confident that it's going to turn out well for us.

@williamg1 @Cang @a57se It's not just one year, I believe there's an option for more years- in fact the option spans through 2016 (3 seasons). What I find about Idzik is that he never likes to be strapped to something and always wants an "escape". In the worst case scenario if the team does poorly he has an option to make a change at the position. Secondly, he likes those kind of "short term retribution" deals so that his players and staff remain motivated. Barring an epic collapse, I don't think Ryan gets fired.

All he got was 1 year in guarantees, so its 1 year. Rex is literally in the same position he was in last year.
