Calvin Pryor with Roger Goodell

S Pryor being evaluated for a concussion

Jets rookie safety Calvin Pryor — the team’s first round pick — left Saturday’s practice after sustaining a head injury (Star-Ledger, July 26th).

Pryor, known as a big-hitting safety, is being evaluated for a concussion. Pryor is competing for playing time at safety. Head coach Rex Ryan addressed Pryor’s absence.

“You know the new protocol is that if we know there is a concussion, you guys will know about it immediately,” Ryan told reporters via the Star-Ledger. “So don’t think we’re covering something up. As of right now, we don’t know if it’s a concussion or not. But it was a head injury, and obviously, when those things happen, you’re always going to side on being cautious. So that’s what we’re doing. Whether it’s a concussion or not, I’m not sure. We’ll see how that progresses.”

It’s an unfortunate way for Pryor to begin his career as a Jet on the team’s first day of full pads.  We’ll have to wait and see what Rex tells us in the coming days about Pryor’s readiness to return.

If Pryor is found to not have a concussion, then his timetable to return to the field might be rather quick.  If Pryor is found to have sustained a concussion, then it might be a prolonged period before he can return to the field … not days, but week or weeks.

That would be bad news for a rookie who needs this vital time in training camp to continue to immerse himself in the defense on the field.  It also means that the Jets best coverage safety might not be able to get as many reps as possible.

We’ll hope for the best, but the one thing that I would say is that Jaiquawn Jarrett has had a good few days of practice and is doing a solid job in coverage and around the line.  Look to see if his name doesn’t start to come up more with Pryor sidelined indefinitely.

Why is your first round pick on punt return duty Rex? This is just plain dumb.

With the hard-hitting nature of pryor's game, I hope future/more frequent concussions don't become a part of this young man's future.

with toon, chrebet etc... the jets have seen their share of careers negatively effected by concussions.

Not very smart to have your first round pick and penciled in starter at safety on punt protection.

Special teams are for backups and marginal starters, not for stud starters you are counting on for big things.

I hope he is ok first and foremost.

He loves football, so I just hope he is w/o a concussion and gets the rest needed in any case.

I told you guys! Wait for this guy to take the first full hit and see what happens. Let's hope he is okay.

@Boozer32  Rex may know defense but has no common sense, the guys trying to make the team should be on special teams not the no.1 pick

@Hanknaples did you also predict that his injury would come from a hit during punt return duties? Probably not

C'mon Brian...lets NOT get silly about it !!

I commented that I still haven't seen the CONSISTENT toughness everyone drools about, because I see his hits are either on and angle, from behind, the same direction (with the flow) or to unsuspecting players !!!

I suggested that we wait till his first few straight on, square , full front impact tackles and see what happens....see if he can fully handle the BIG BOYS power.

For that comment, I got tons of grief from Brendan and his Twin!!

@Brendan

On a side note..do you think Gilbert would challenge Ditka for the "Trade of the Century"??
I think the trade will happen and unlike the Saints, it will have GREAT results for the Cavs !!

Getting Love will make the Cavs GREAT (Better than the Miami's Trio)....It will have the same effect as Debusshere from Detroit had on the Knicks in 1968 !!!
