Shaq Evans has ‘severe’ shoulder injury, could go on IR

Shaq Evans has a “severe” shoulder injury, Rex Ryan said on Tuesday.

The injury is bad enough that Evans could be placed on season-ending injured reserve, Ryan said.

Evans was the the No. 115 pick in the NFL Draft in 2014, out of UCLA.

Evans comes in at 6-foot-1 and 213 pounds. He was an All-Pac 12 honorable mention in 2012 and 2013. Evans led the team in receptions during those two seasons with 60 in 2012 and 47 in 2013 and finished his career tied for 10th all-time on the school’s list of receptions with a total of 126. He was suspended for one game during the 2011 season after he participated in a fight against Arizona.

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

Evans had an interesting camp, dealing with drops and concentration lapses early on but adjusting with some impressive plays in the coming days.  There were still some miscues, but in watching him, it was clear that he has the natural ability to be a good deep ball receiver with some work on his short game.

We never want to see anyone’s season end this early, but in some ways there might be a silver lining to this for the Jets.  While talented, Evans could benefit from a year watching from the injured reserve much as former Jets WR Chansi Stuckey did back in 2007.  Evans was already behind due to his college’s schedule (he missed most of OTAs because of this by CBA rules) and so while a promising player, the Jets might be able to sneak him back on their injured reserve once they waive him.  With a crowded field of upside player sbehind their top four receivers, this opens the opportunity for them to push forward someone who might have been squeezed during roster cutdowns … someone like Greg Salas or Saalim Hakim.

The Jets have yet to waive Evans and are likely being smart, trying to time the matter as best possible to not expose him – likely he will get waived/designated when teams pare down to 75 players from 90.

The reason?  This year, in particular, teams seem more frisky with other teams’ injured players.  In the last week, the Patriots claimed injured Carolina RB Tyler Gaffney and the Browns just claimed OL Michael Bowie from the Seahawks.

Its pretty obvious Idzik is putting him on IR just to stash him (and not risk losing him if released).

What people didn't know is Idzik called him into his office and smashed his shoulder with a baseball bat to make it happen. It was a business decision. Idzik is cold.

Sup everybody.  Been a while since I've been on the boards (changed jobs and no longer a cube monkey!) but no worries I've been keeping up.  That time of year again.  Preseason is upon us and Big Chris has a couple of tickets to give away.  Want do this a little differently this year.  if you would like to go to the opener on Thursday night shoot me an email at christopher.viviano@gmail.com as to why you would like to go and who you want to bring.  Hopefully, I can give away 2 sets of 2 tickets, free of charge to a couple of loyal readers and avid Jet fans like myself.

All I ask is that you actually use the tickets and be respectful of the neighbors around you.  Most of them are my peoples and awesome Jet fans.  Be well everybody and let's go eat a god damn snack.

Jets should have drafted one of the top 10 receivers the draft......

Can't believe Hill is gonna start again.... and Evans is hurt

Jets will have one of the poorest receiving groups in the NFL (again)....don't kill the messenger

Hopefully Amaro can put up some numbers along with Chris Johnson....Lets see if Decker is productive (hope so)

Unfortunate, but he wasn't having the best camp, and with a crowded WR position he was being out-shined by a lot of others in camp. This will give him a redshirt year to learn the offense and hopefully the injury isn't so serious that he can't get some late-season work in.

The fact is most of the debate here before the draft dealt with Cooks, Beckham and Lee. Watkins and Evans were both considered to be long gone before the Jets pick. I also remember a lot of negative remarks regarding Benjamin.

Saunders, Enauna and Evans were all considered to be 5th to 7th rounders. They may have been mentioned but not the hottest of topics.

I can't go this year, but I used Big Chris's tickets last year to take me and my nephews.  It was a blast, thanks again, homie.

Jets should have drafted one of the top 10 receivers the draft......

Maybe we did.  We'll find out.  The first ten WRs drafted aren't going to be the best ten WRs from this class, dude.  Draft doesn't work that way.

Can't believe Hill is gonna start again.... and Evans is hurt

He's not, though.  He's going to be the #4 WR at best, and he'll need to fend off Ford and Saunders and maybe Salas to earn that job.  The three starters are Decker, Kerley, and Nelson, and they've been the starters for months now.

Jets will have one of the poorest receiving groups in the NFL (again)....don't kill the messenger

You don't know that, which is why you get killed.

@bradysucks They probably wont be top 10 but the addition of Decker, Kerley healthier, Nelson for a full year and improved QB play (Geno or Vick) should mean a lot of improvement. That would be true even if Hill sucks.

The fact is most of the FIRST ROUND DEBATE here before the draft dealt with Cooks, Beckham, Lee, Watkins, Evans, and Benjamin, and the people here who concern themselves with things other than just the first round (i.e., everyone but you and Bradysucks) also discussed AS A HOT TOPIC what to do with the other eleven draft choices we had, including heavily and thoroughly discussing names like Jalen Saunders, Shaq Evans, Quincy Enunwa, Martavis Bryant, Dri Archer, De'Anthony Thomas, John Brown, Allen Robinson, Robert Herron, Jared Abbrederis, Donte Moncreif, Ryan Grant, Cody Latimer, Jordan Matthews, and a host of others.

Just because you didn't participate in the discussion it doesn't mean that nobody knew who Jalen Saunders and Quincy Enunwa were before we picked them, man.

@Pat d

I had Enunwa's and Evans' values being swapped, with Enunwa being about a 4th rounder and Evans being about a 6th rounder.

You make fair points....

My only point is that a lot of the guys from last year's unproductive group appear to still be in the starting rotation at WR......Nelson, Kerley, Hill were among the league's worst receiving group in 2013....This means Geno better be much better or we had better get a lot of receiving production from Decker, Amaro, Saunders, and Johnson.....

I don't know how anybody could be confident in the Jets receivers at this point in time

@bradysucks I wonder if signing the #1 FA at the position maybe played a role in that.

Pat d

Whatever.

Most of the debate surrounded the 1st round. Talking about other players you like is fine but the endless mock drafts is pointless. As far as WRs I wanted the Jets to take in round 3 or later was Davante Adams.

As far as WRs this was a disappointing draft for the Jets, considering this may be the deepest WR class in a long while.

Pat d
Pat d

I thought Evans was a 5th round talent and Enunwa a 7th rounder.

@bradysucks

Nelson, Kerley, Hill were among the league's worst receiving group in 2013..

No.

Nelson, Kerley, and Hill had the league's worst QB throwing to them.  Doesn't mean they sucked, it means they were in a bad passing offense.  (And none of them played in 16 games, mind you.

If Geno's improved, they'll be fine.

And, again, in gigantic bold and underline, ERIC DECKER HOMIE.

@a57se Uh Oh...vacation has officially worn off!!!

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se He gets killed because when Stephen Hill does something worth buzzing about, he doubles or triples down on his "Hill is the suckiest suck who ever sucked" stuff.

He was the guy who told us Hill wouldn't make it out of camp, so people remember that when he goes off on a tirade.

Brendan
Brendan

@bradysucks But Kerley and Nelson were the #1 and #2 WR's. Now, they're #2 and #3 (or #4). Hill, who was dogged by injuries, and despite your writing him off, is looking like a useful NFL WR right now. My biggest worry is that Clyde Gates has fooled the coaches into letting him make the roster, so let's pray that doesn't happen.

They're not a top group (but if Kerley/Hill both have full, healthy seasons a top 5 of Decker/Kerley/Hill/Nelson/Saunders has potential. It's young and athletic and Decker has looked every bit the stud the team was hoping for when they signed him. Time will tell, but acting like this is a group in line with Carolina or Oakland is just unfair at this point.

tsjc68
tsjc68

@Brendan @bradysucks

Or also signing three other guys within the past year who all are looking damn good in camp and seem ready to contribute to a good NFL offense (Nelson, Salas, Ford).

Also, we didn't pass on all the top receivers in the draft.  We passed on all the top-rated prospects at WR in the draft.  There's a difference.

Maybe we drafted the three best WRs in the whole class.  Who knows?  The draft is a crapshoot, weird stuff happens all the time.

tsjc68
tsjc68

@Pat d

"We spent more time talking about what to do with our first round pick" is a true statement.

"No one on this site was hoping the Jets draft Enunwa or Saunders over the WRs that they passed on," and  "I know you weren't touting Enunwa or Saunders before the draft," which you said below, are false statements.

(And yes, I corrected your repeated misspelling of Enunwa's name.  You're welcome.)

Again, just because YOU PERSONALLY did not take the time to scout Jalen Saunders and Quincy Enunwa and Shaq Evans or other potential Day 3 WR picks to see what upside they could offer this team and whether or not they were worth their choices does not mean the rest of us joined you in your ignorance about the value of laterounders.

@bradysucks You said he'd be cut in training camp. I'm not being unfair when I say you have a serious bias against the guy.

I agree that he has to show it in games consistently, but there are a few key areas that people said he needed to improve in. Being physical at the point of the catch, using his superior athleticism to box-out (or out-jump) smaller DB's, and using his hands more to catch. The first two he's been doing consistently in camp, the third no-so-much (from what I've seen in minimal clips). But if he's doing those first two, the third becomes a lot less of a deal-breaker for him succeeding. Uber-athletic players can overcome some lesser technique if they're out-physicaling smaller players. Hill has always had that potential, but he hasn't realized it yet. Maybe he's started to realize that being 6'5" and over 210 pounds means he should be a juggernaut in the defensive backfield and just steamroll people. Maybe he's tired of people saying he sucks. Maybe he's just progressing as a WR. Or maybe it's just Clyde Gates-type training camp faux-success. But at least he's doing what we asked him to do, so far.

I don't get killed.....Any rational person who is not a die hard Jets fan can look at Hill's production and see an awful football player.......Only on this blog do people deny the reality.....

Like I said Brendan.....awaken me when Hill does something in a game that helps us win or when he at least has mediocre production when compared to other starting NFL receivers....

You are NOT objective.....

I've said all along that if Hill ever amounts to a productive player I will give him his due, but I don't feel bad about saying he has stunk and has been a huge failure for the Jets thus far

I want to UPGRADE.....You want to wallow in below average/mediocrity Brendan

Brendan
Brendan

@bradysucks Dude. You are endorsing cutting a player before the roster needs to be cut down. You are endorsing cutting a player who is 23 and one of the most athletically gifted players to ever walk through the doors of the Jets' facilities. You are endorsing cutting a player who the team currently has in their top four, a team whose offense is run by an NFL-lifer.

"You are NOT objective....."

Uh, yeah, I kind of am. If you remember, I had basically written Hill off already. So if he turns it around and becomes a good player he's proving me wrong as well as you. The proof is on the field, where he's been rather impressive in camp so far this year.

"I want to UPGRADE"

So what do you call Eric Decker?

bradysucks

@Brendan @bradysucks

Let me just say that I respect the opinion of others about Hill and respect the loyalty of fans to Hill.

I simply am not a loyal fan of Hill....My favorite Jets are the guys who produce or the big underdogs (see Jordan White).......I'm unsympathetic to guys who are drafted high who don't show up and make a difference on Sunday's

Most NFL analysts would probably agree that if a WR isn't productive within 3 years of starting then he most likely never will be.......

Hill will have EVERY opportunity to prove me wrong. I hope he does........but I'm not apologizing for thinking there are many WR's out there who are better football players than Stephen Hill who would be more productive Jets than Hill as a starting WR

Hill is the starting WR opposite Decker........which to me is repugnant based on what I've seen the past 2 years......I don't understand what the Jets are doing......

We talked all off season about the need to upgrade from Hill and he's starting AGAIN.....

I would like to start Nelson or Kerley opposite of Decker and start Saunders in the slot....

I will make you happy now.......done with Hill for today.....He can prove me wrong when the games count.....You can awaken me when this happens

@bradysucks "Like I said Brendan.....awaken me when Hill does something in a game that helps us win"

How about the Bills game in 2012 where he had two touchdowns and 89 yards?  Or the game against the same team in 2013 when he had over 100 yards and a touchdown in the first half of a game they only won by seven?  Or the game against Atlanta where he had two crucial first downs on the game winning drive...?

Why don't these achievements count?

I gotta give you credit Brendan.,....You managed to find a video of my least favorite Jets coach (Lal) talking about my least favorite Jets receiver.......Sanjay Lal's receiving units have been train wrecks......and now we have him talking about Hill...

They are both lucky I don't own the Jets because they would both be unemployed.....

Having said this......nice video......We'll just wait and seen if these 2 football misfits turn into buterfly's :)

In the meantime I'll make pretend we are going to be starting Al Toon and Wesley Walker who were actually AWESOME.......I miss that
