Stephen Hill to IR

Stephen Hill has been placed on injured reserve, ending his season.

Hill has been battling a knee injury, which kept him out of the game against the Raiders.

Saalim Hakim may replace Hill on the active roster (Fensom).

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

This was hinted at once the nature of Hill’s injury was made known to the public after the game last weekend.  This is now the second time Hill has ended the season on the injured reserve and it certainly brings into question what his role with the team might be going forward.

More than likely Hill will be back with the Jets in 2014 in some capacity, but his role will have to be based on his merits on the field more than just being a second round draft pick.

Hill has been unlucky in health and the team he was drafted by. The Jets are one of the worst situations for a rookie. How does a raw rookie WR develop in 2012 under a crappy Sanchez and in 2013 with an even worse Smith. I wonder how he would have developed if the Pats drafted him. Look at how Dobson and Thompkins have developed this year.

hill got to put some more muscle on his frame...i would be disappointed if the hill experiment ends this year i hope the jets keep him for the 2014 season and see if he improve during the preseason...if we can keep abdoushi and campbell on the roster this year we should be able to keep a spot for hill next year

When I saw Hill at summer camp August 12th and 13th, he had the trainer rub some kind of pain killer on his knee area just off to the side of the formation, but even with that he played well till he was illegally banged helmet to helmet on the side of his head on a what should have been a 15 yd.penalty. I was very pissed off.

I wasn't terribly impressed with Evans.... he didn't seem to run great routes, he was mostly good at the scramble drill with Manziel.... would rather see Watkins or one of the LSU recievers.... I hope hill gets healthy this offseason and comes back strong... you can see he has the talent.

With the 15th pick of the 2014 NFL Draft the Jets select: WR Mike Evans out of Texas A&M. The best receiver in the draft and is the most NFL READY PLAYER out of any position in this draft. We've been wanting a game changer with size and speed for a long time, so if we are in position to grab him, I think it'd be foolish to pass up this chance

Feel bad for Stephen and wish him a speedy recovery, but as a perspective from the Jets, I think this could be a blessing in disguise for him. This opens up more playing time for a player like Greg Salas and David Nelson who both in my opinions, have shown more promise than Hill. The receiving corps if all healthy, will now look like Holmes, Kerley, Nelson, and Salas, which in my opinion isn't half bad. Yes, Geno was inconsistent and maybe should have gotten the ball cleanly to Hill a few more times. But he made no spectacular or even great plays to make a tough catch. Look at Kerley, still not at 100%, makes a gorgeous catch in traffic in the endzone in his first game back. Those are plays receivers need to make to help out their quarterback, and Hill wasn't making those plays or is just not capable as such. I think this Jets squad benefits from the loss of Hill

Brian, You're right wrt Hills playing time based on performance and not draft position. I've been saying that, not justl for Hill and Geno but the whole team. Jets management has to grow up, drop its CYA policy and do what's best for the team. I don't understand why Woody puts up with this b/c all he has to do is make that policy clear to whoever he hires.

Note: I understand that drafting a player who is incapable of playing up to NFL standards is embarrassing & can get  GM fired, but you can;t hide failure and will get fired for blowing draft choices in a long run anyway. And all teams blow draft choices b/c no matter how much the evaluations show (e.g., The Combine) it's a crap shoot in reality. I;d prefer my team draft based on college film anyway.

Hill just needs somebody to teach him how to tie his shoe laces he'll be fine. Besides that he's going to grandma house and grandma will fix all his boo boo's there. Im sure grandma will teach him how to tie his shoe laces. then watch next year he realty gonna play. Dats right!

We can let Hill heal and keep him on the depth chart for next year, as I'm not the only one that has seen wide open receivers under Geno and don't want a one dimensional evaluation of him. A tall and stong WR in the next draft, and a (sorry to say it again) monster TE should be intriguing to follow along side a (hopefully) promising new QB competition.

Lets hope and pray Idzik makes us proud in 2014.

Please bring back the old format, this one is dulling out everyone, and we even appear to have lost 68....

Depending on who we draft and what free agents we bring in. He very well may be cut next training camp

Agreed about Evans. Watkins or Lee would be better if we go WR round 1....

Geno is the QB though. a rookie at that, he has shown promise when he has help around him. Hill besides a couple games in Buffalo has shown us nothing at all. He's shown he can't be a top 4 option in our passing game and him being on the field actually hurts Genos progress

@marshrandy  i just signed in to chime in, i will not even use this site or read anything on it or deal BGA's naddddda until this is fixed, because this nonsense livefyre im completely turned off by this site.....i would spend hours at work debating with everyone and get my info and knowledge from you and everyone else....now i rather sit on facebook and make fun of guidos on the jersey shore....TJB or SNY should be ashamed they did this to to their fans....my jobs 5 dollar servers are easier to operate then this and more user friendly and they block everythinggggg

@marshrandy  I hate 'em too, but it sounds like it was, allegedly, WordPress that pushed the change, and SNY uses the WP platform.   No, I'm not clear on how WP would be forcing the change onto SNY, as it's not like WP dropped support fo Disqus ( http://wordpress.org/plugins/disqus-comment-system/ ) - its whole business model is to support multiple plugins, not a single approach.  So again, I don't understand TJB stating that SNY is blaming WP on the switch.

Again, all in all, I think Livefyre is worse than Disqus, particularly when using the mobile version on my cell (it's really bad there).  I guess we'll all adjust, but, ugh.

I have to agree with your point. I am not a fan (mostly because where he was picked), but he really has never had a veteran receiver to be mentored by. That is why we need to sign a vet to help Hill develop or move on.

Worse because of who was still on board and because we actually gave up picks to get him. I'll never get the logic. Don't our scouts watch film?

@a57se @karlhungus I could see how Lee might be a better option, I'm lobbying for Lee or Evans in round one. However, I really am not high on Watkins. Very raw in my opinion and I could see a guy like him maybe not having a great work ethic. But really, I think Evans and Lee are both great and if drafted will almost certainly hit

Anthony Capp
Anthony Capp

@a57se @Anthony Capp you really don't think so? I mean he may not have 40 yd dash speed but the guy plays real fast if you've ever watched him.

frustjetfn

@gbrownnGeno has some talent, as should ever player on an NFL roster, but is far from a proven performer and may never get there. As a fan, I can hope he may make it and root for that, but I hope Jets management is mature enough to see the world as it is (& draft accordingly) rather than see the world as they wish it was.

The fact is that Geno did NOT perform in his rookie year anywhere near the level of almost sure to succeed rookies: RGIII, Luck and Wilson. To show you how unsure Geno's promise is, even RGIII's future is in doubt and he was phenomenal last year; there's no way anyone on earth can compare Geno to RGIII. Simply said, if RGIII can fail, so can any lesser talent in the league. So I don't want Idzik to draft based on what he thinks Geno may become: I want him to draft based on what Geno's performance on the season has been. If Idzik does that, he'll be stocking the Jets roster for prolonged success and if Geno does develop in the future, great. We'll be that much stronger.

@Jerry C  Never had an established good QB passing to him either. His number of drops are exaggerated and  throws from Mark and Geno were mostly too far off for him to make a play. I think the coaches know the passes haven't been there so he never truly had a real test of his abilities and they'll wait till Geno hopefully further develops. When the QB was on (so few times) Hill wasn't so bad.

@frustjetfn@gbrownn

I like your philosophy of setting draft priorities based on performance, not what-ifs. If that is what happens, I don't see how we won't draft a QB, 2 or 3 WR's, a TE, a RB, a Safety, an OG, an OLB and a FB. That leaves three picks for BPA!

@Brendan@BentYou don't draft 3 - 4 year projects in the 2nd round! That goes a long way in explaining why this team lacks talent now.

3-4 years to develop him into a productive player if he doesn't get hurt in that timeframe? BTW, does that scout know the average career of an NFL player is between (depending on if you believe the union or the NFL) 3.2 - 6 yrs? - Fire that scout now! He's a dumb axx.

bradysucks

@Bent@Brendan I don't get how the Jets passed on Alshon Jeffrey to draft a guy like Hill who was a nobody in college who never caught the ball. He arrived at the NFL level with ball skills that are flat out embarassing. I know 12 twelve year olds that catch better than Hill. I see it when my nephew plays football.

Then this year the Jets pass on Keenan Allen. It is mind blowing how inept this organization is when it comes to offense.

I love the Jets but the last time they made an effort to draft a stud receiver was Keyshawn Johnson and they haven't drafted a stud running back since Freeman McNeil. They haven't had a real TE since Mickey Shuler,

When incompetent suits run the show this is what you get. The Jets settle for mediocrity on offense so that is what they get......They need to clean out the entire scouting department and start over.......

Any team that goes this many years without drafting all pro quality playmakers needs to change its philosophy and infrastructure starting at the top of the organization

@Brendan@Bent

Early in the season before he got hurt Hill look pretty good to me ..That Buffalo game comes to mined. Im thinking that great catch he made on the sidelines is when he got hurt. I forget who we where playing however I was surprised he hung on to the ball.

Brendan
Brendan

@Bent @Brendan I can't see them cutting a 22 year old who played hurt half the season before being shut down. The scout who pushed for him said he was a 3-4 year project, I can't see them cutting Hill before at least giving him that 3rd year.
