Summarizing the Jets moves in free agency

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

As we move into the lead up to the NFL draft, here’s a summary of the moves the Jets have made in free agency.

New Additions
Decker, Eric WR
Ford, Jacoby WR
Giacomini, Breno T
Patterson, Dimitri CB
Vick, Michael QB

Analysis: The team upgraded at two crucial offensive positions.  By removing Santonio Holmes and adding Decker, the team has gotten better and shaved cap space in the process.  While Decker can be a productive player with the Jets, the team is likely not done yet at the position with the draft approaching and 12 draft picks.  Mike Vick’s addition provides the Jets the best available quarterback from the market and allows the team to play the man who can best help the team this year.  In a perfect world that player would be Geno Smith, but he’s going to have to earn it.  The winner of the QB competition will likely be the man who can hold onto the football … no small feat for either Geno Smith or Mike Vick.  Giacomini is a lateral move at best from Austin Howard but the team saved themselves a lot of money in 2015 and beyond.  The Jets had every opportunity to truly upgrade their cornerback position if they wanted to but the team chose to pass on players like Vontae Davis, Alterraun Verner and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie … but let’s not believe that bringing back Darrelle Revis was more than a remote possibility at best.  Instead, the team went with a risky prospect in the aging Dimitri Patterson.  When he played in 2013, Patterson was impressive but his injury only allowed him to see six games all year.  Between Patterson and Kyle Wilson the team will sort out the second starting cornerback position, but the team would be wise to look to longer-term improvement through the NFL draft.

RE-SIGNED
Colon, Willie G
Douzable, Leger DT
Folk, Nick K
Pace, Calvin OLB

Analysis: It was reported that the team was looking to upgrade on Willie Colon, but after some flirting with Geoff Schwartz and Jon Asamoah, the team failed to do so.  The team will return Colon who was a hold-the-fort player for the Jets in 2014, but expect the Jets to foster some competition in camp.  Leger Douzable will return to play a vital reserve role for the Jets in which he was extremely successful in 2013.  Folk comes back on his well deserved new contract after seeing a revival as a kicker in New York.  Calvin Pace will continue to set the edge for the Jets on a two year deal while they consider longer term solutions for his role, likely through the draft.

SIGNED ELSEWHERE
Cromartie, Antonio CB
Ducasse, Vladimir G
Howard, Austin T
Sanchez, Mark QB
Shugarts, J.B. T
Trufant, Isaiah DB

Analysis: Cromartie and the Jets were parting ways one way or another once that break was made, while he might be the most missed player from among this group, the team might have felt uncomfortable with projecting much from him based on what they knew about his hip.  Austin Howard will be missed as well, but for the money he got from Oakland to become an interior player it is understandable why the Jets didn’t offer the same money … moreso when you consider that Howard’s play tailed off badly during the end of the season …

CUT/UNSIGNED
Berry, Aaron DB
Cribbs, Josh WR
Garrard, David
Hilliard, Lex FB
Holmes, Santonio WR
Mauga, Josh LB
Reed, Ed FS
Reynaud, Darius RB
Winslow, Kellen TE

Analysis: There’s very few names that I would expect to see back in connection with the Jets.  The player most likely to return might be Ed Reed who might want to skip spring minis in favor of coming in shortly before the start of training camp.  While many decry Reed’s play for the Jets, his play was impressive down the stretch.  Was that a function of the Jets use of Cover Two?  Ed Reed has not announced his retirement yet and might be looking for the right opportunity to come in late.  That team could still be the Jets depending on what happens in the draft.  Moving on, the Jets were flowery in their pulic statement last year when Aaron  Berry was injured early in camp, but he’s not been re-signed by the team.  The addition of Dimitiri Patterson might have obviated the team’s interest in Berry.  From what we hear, the Jets tongues were wagging about LB Troy Davis (though we don’t understand why from what we saw) so don’t expect the Jets to bring back Josh Mauga due to a numbers crunch.

I get that Idzik wants to build the team thru the draft.  We are just used to going after high profile players.   I am willing to wait to see how the rest of the offseason plays out.   Idzik only misstep has been not replacing Antonio Cromartie.   This puts more pressure on Dee Milliner to step to be the team's #1 CB without a proven CB to take over if Milliner struggles.   I don't think the Jets are going to pick a CB in the first round.

My top choices for the #18 pick are:

1. Marquis Lee -  Best #1 WR option outside of Watkins and Evans.  Injury concern.

2. Odell Beckham Jr.- Next best option.  Questionable hands.

3. Brandin Cooks - Game breaking option. Not a true #1 WR.

Expect some trade ups to effect these mock drafts. Don't be surprised if the jets move back to acquire more picks. (3rd rd.)

I want Santonio back on a cheap contract.

Quite clear already that we'll get zero compensatory picks next year. I'd assume Idzik was aware of that when he re-signed Cumberland and Pace and that this informed his strategy in approaching other free agents.

Mauga has shown himself a liability when it comes to staying healthy and being available. I don't think they need to give him any more chances.

"Giacomini is a lateral move at best from Austin Howard..."

"Giacomini is a lateral move at worst from Austin Howard..." - fixed that for you Brian. You can thank me later.

(you wrote yourself that late in the year howard's play badly tailed off)

the moves have been conservatively well done in FA, but the real deal will be draft, Idzik will show if he's really the man with this draft, this draft will make or break the future of the team.

I'd give Idzik a B for free agency.

Decker = A - major need, and got the best player available for a good price

Bringing in Vick - is it just to improve the team for a year or maybe two?  Or is it to push and to help Geno?  If the later I'll give it a B.  And Vick isn't costing much, so it's a reasonable signing.

Not throwing away money on over priced players like Jarius Byrd = a plus

Minor moves

Cutting Sanchez = a no brainer, no credit

Lateral move - Howard for Giacomini - a push

I kind of wish the Jets had picked up better safety and CB help than they did.  I can see letting Cro go, he might be good or maybe the Jets know something we don't.  I'm not sold on Dimitri Patterson.

I would have been happy to get DeSean Jackson at 2 years at 8MM per year.  I would have been happy to get a running back and who knows whats up with CJ2K.

With the saved cap space rolling over to next year, the Jets did ok.

OK, but not great.

What I really want to see is a good draft.

And I'm really concerned that Idzik hired two duds (Tim Ruskel, and Rod Graves) that he has ties too but did poorly at their last teams as GMs,  and now have major player selection responsibilities.

Idzik is tearing it up.  Glad we are paying him the big bucks.

When did we pass on Davis? Who says we're choosing between Paterson, and Wilson for the starting CB position? Did someone not get enough sleep last night?

@a57se  I like the Savage and Starr pick. Though I would prefer Cooks in round one

@borisjets as long as he gets his speed back from that LISFRANC... it really slowed him down.....

Marcus Armstrong

@a57se  Mack, obviously, as everybody else said. Teddy B if he's the replacement, but more in the spirit of your question: Jason Verrett.

@a57se Mack, that safety that I'm drawing a blank on the name at the moment, or Lee

@a57se   You love to take away alot of options!   Beckham just had to go at 17....In that case, Lee is the next option.  Amaro in the second if he's available.

@a57se  Khalil Mack easily. You really think he'd fall to 18?

@sir_manolo  CJ to the Giants would be great though. I would love that move. Keep CJ away from my Jets and I will be a happy man

@jake100  by christmas you would want him out of town, trust me

The draft will be run by Rod Graves, a former GM, hired by John Idzik, who himself has never " ran " a draft. John Idzik does have some personell/scouting history, but Rod Graves is a former GM, & I believe at one point had a very good rep

jdb4
jdb4

@McGeorge

One caveat to that.  Ruskel and Graves have scouting backgrounds.  Some guys are not made to be GMs, they are better suited for non adminitrative roles.

The same way some guys are better coordinators than Head Coaches (Norv Turner, Dick LeBeau)

@bobbyj

Idzik just ran the draft last year.  Not sure how your statement makes sense today.

@jake100  4-1.  I'm going to start calling you Opposite Man.

The Jets and Idzik are looking more and more like the woeful Mets and Alderson. Hype the fans with interest in key free agents to sell tickets and then sign very very few. I expect Johnson to design elsewhere as do little Idzik fiddles away doing little.

@a57se @MarshRandy  I read them sometimes after watching the episode to get clarity on what is going on. I don't pay close enough attention when I'm watching

@jake100  You called Vick "poison" to a young QB? Just last year he helped out Foles in Philly. stop spewing BS and lies to suit your witch hunt. Hows the mobilization going Joey?

@jake100 @eurojet"There were better and cheaper options for Geno than an old washed up distraction magnet that cant even stay healthy."

such as?

levi

@jake100  If he's as bad as you say Geno should win the QB competition hands down then so relax.

eurojet
eurojet

@jake100 @eurojet  again. He wasnt brought in to start. And I dont think he is washed up - with a decent o-line he can still win some football games

levi
levi

@jake100 @eurojet  Vick filled a bigger need than CJ will and you cant compare salary for a RB with a QB. We dont even really need a RB.

eurojet
eurojet

@jake100 @eurojet  on a one year deal though. Nothing wrong with that imo. We all know Geno will face some growing pains this upcoming season. Vick is nothing more but insurance. He wasnt brought in to be our starting QB...

eurojet

@jake100 @eurojet

I wouldnt want him. We are in a rebuild, I dont get why we should bring in an aging RB that averages 3,9 YPC. Two years ago we all ran Greene out of town, who averaged similar numbers. Draft a guy like Seastrunk, Hyde or Hill and we are fine.
