TJB’s 2014 Name-that-Squad Contest

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

It’s now time for the most anticipated event of the pre-season: TJB’s Annual Name-that-Squad Contest!!!

We’re going to make it a little simpler this year (for our own sanity): name the 21 players (the Jets roster currently has 74 players) you feel will be cut in the coming hours. The official deadline for announcing roster moves is Saturday 4PM ET and we will accept entries up until 10PM tonight, by which time we expect that names will start leaking out.  In practice, there may be a few changes to the roster after cut-down day, but we will go by who is on the roster when the Jets announce the cutdowns.

This year, we will use the >>Google Form<< we just created to make tabulation easier!  And remember, pick the players you think will be cut between now and the announced 53-man roster.

The winner is the one with the fewest mistakes, but remember to add your ten practice squad picks for the tie-breaker. (Hint: Players are ineligible for the practice squad once they have been in the league three years or if they have been on an active roster for half a season). Again, your selections are limited to those guys currently on the roster.

As ever, the winner earns our ever-lasting respect and 12 months bragging rights!

Good luck!

P Robert Malone shook free. Is Quigley bad enough to bring Malone back?

Question: How long does a player picked up on waivers have to stay on the 53-man roster? Like say the Jets pick up a CB released by another team, can they cut him after week 1 when Dee is ready to play?

530AM and the Farm already in high gear! One week from tomorrow baby!

I have 3QBs, 4RBs, 3TEs, and 7WRs. I have Pryor, Amaro, Dozier, Saunders and Reilly making the team with Enunwa, Enemkpali, George, Hyder, Dixon, Qvale and Boyd on the practice squad. I also have Pantale and Miles on the practice squad.

My list of cuts is the same as BklynDude's list except that I have Richardson on the team and Hyder on the practice squad. My additional cuts are Patterson and Thompson. I had trouble deciding between Hyder and Thompson.

Jets better keep D. Richardson, this kid can play!

Well it seems I was wrong today and right before last night's game on Simms. It appears Simms will be QB 3.

The amount of time spent debating bringing Vernon Gholston back to the Jets on Bent's BGA was as epic as it was surreal as it was bizarre.

After watching last night game, I think Boyd does infact have a higher ceiling then Simms, thus Simms get cut, Gates, Salas gets cut, RB Green gets cut, Bohanon gets cut to make room for Pantale list him as a full back who can play ocassional tight end. That's 5 and here's the rest:

Jeremiah George

Johnny Patrick

Dimitri Patterson ( yes, to make room for another vet)

T.J Barnes

Nick Bellore

Brandon Dixon

A.J Edds

Kerry Hyder

Jaiquan Jarret

Rontez Miles

Jeremy Reeves

Ben Iljana

Dawan Landry

Caleb Schlauderaff

Zack Thompson

Lequan Lewis, (He did some good stuff, but not enough)

Ellis Lankster ( Not good enough, we need room to get someone who is equally good on special teams but a bit better on our CB depth chart)

PS:

Tahj Boyd

Ike Ememkpali

Quincy Enunwa

Dalton Freeman

Oday Aboushi

William Campbell

Dokota Dozier

Tivita Finau

Brent Qvale

Trevor Reilly

Steven Hill will get one more shot, he is that gifted that you must go with him for another year, atleast this year he can be behind 3 other receivers on the depth chart, Decker, Kerley and Nelson.

i think this could be a very very long season for the local faithful. while the green ones are self destructing the pats are flexing their muscles. their OL is very very strong. and their defense looks to be improved 100% from last year and they were very good last year until a rash of injuries hit them.their LB are stacked with future and present all pros as well as their secondary. can the NY jets petion for a change of venue i don't know what hope there is right now and for the foreseeable future.

Don't you ever sleep...geezzzz!!

BTW interesting take coming from Vegas:

They have Geno @ 3200 yds 15.5 TD's which is considered a good year offensively for the Jets while at the same time they have Rexy @1.5:1 that he WILL be fired by week 17!!

Seems like even in Vegas the Jets can't win for losing!!

Pablo Bruno

@Tequila Joe I didn't see anything spectacular about him, you have to remember he was playing against 3rd string and players who aren't going to make the team.

If the reports that they'd be blackballed by the Jets organization were accurate then Rob Turner is not an option.

Pablo - Your practice squad is included within the 21 cuts you have to make so you can actually keep 10 of those guys...unless you want to roll with a 43 man roster!

Yes, the Pats are most likely winning the division again this year and will be strong contenders every year until Brady retires. If that's too much for you to take, please STFU or just go away until then, unless you have something else to contribute to this blog. And don't you dare celebrate if we make the playoffs.

Steven Windeler
Steven Windeler

@j_spikett  10 years since the Pats have won, and they're still the best team ever.

How are they going to stop the run?

Who is Brady going to throw the ball too.

Why is he so mad they couldn't afford Mankins or any receivers?

Pablo Bruno
Pablo Bruno

@Tequila Joe It's like Pantale last night he looked better then Amaro and Cumberland combined. Not sure if he can have that kind of performance against starters, but I still like him, I liked the comment yesterday about turning him into a fullback and cutting Bohanon, he's way better and as bulky to fit that role. And you can have an extra tight end who's slotted as a fullback, that's just smart, but I doubt the Jets would do something that smart.

@Steven Windeler

Steven..as far as C is concerned..contrary to popular belief Brady doesn't run the team..BB does!1

It'd true, Mankins WAS respected and liked by all so was Welker and Seymour.....and others!!

Belichick could NOT give a rats ass about appeasing all (OPPOSITE OF REXY)....he cares about winning...a cure all!!!

BB has a history of getting rid of stars one year early rather that one year late and he desperately needed a replacement for Hernandez and got it in Wtght....PLUS a 4th rounder !!!

Steven Windeler

@UncleJoesJetFarm @Hanknaples

Yes I keep hearing about Rex being fired because they have this CB problem, and even though he's a great coach he'll have to be fired if they don't make the playoffs.

Ridiculous. Idzik isn't doing things the normal reactionary way that fans are used to seeing.

It would be pretty stupid to fire a great coach for any reason, unless you had a better one lined up. Even then you'd have to start all over on another 3 year plan. There are no other great coaches available as far as I know.

@Hanknaples  BB has never won the division without Brady, Cassell went 11-5 when Brady was out, but the Fins won the division that year with Chad

Steven Windeler
Steven Windeler

@Hanknaples  He has a history of drafting a HOF QB in the 6th round, and winning a few SBs with the team he was left.

Since he built his own roster as the GM/OC/DC he's won a lot of games, but having Brady might make that easier.but

Isn't the SB what matters anyway?

Maybe he should hire a GM because he has no idea what he's doing.

10 years of a HOF QB wasted, and Brady has every right to be angry.

Wright is a 220lb WR JAG

He's not a TE

UncleJoesJetFarm
UncleJoesJetFarm

@Steven Windeler @UncleJoesJetFarm @Hanknaples It is Woody that said"No more patience" Idzik could be on a short leash too, but Rex will get zapped. It will be going on 5 years of no playoffs under Rex and this is a win now league.  If the Jets win 8 games but the arrow is pointing up, I think Rex will stay but 8 wins that are sloppy like last season, he is gone.

" 10 years of a HOF QB wasted,......"

Between Brady and BB, who came first the chicken or the egg??

Steven, you are right on many points but, there are certain facts that are undeniable and the first and foremost is that his drafting could be better but you can not deny the fact that he has molded EVERY ONE of his teams into contenders, and how can you take that away from him????

The second is that he is a HELL OF A COACH proven by the fact that most of his picks take about two to three years and they explode on the scene!!!

BB is the PERFECT definition of the "Little Engine That Could" !!!

Steven Windeler
Steven Windeler

@UncleJoesJetFarm @Steven Windeler @Hanknaples

As long as he gets more with less he should stay. The actual record shouldn't matter to a rational thinking person, but the record against the anticipated record.

Last year that was 3-13, so 8-8 was 5 games over the anticipated record. That's coach of the year material.

This year it looks like 5, or 6 wins is what most pundits think we should reach.

Rex should not be held accountable for the personnel. That's reactionary, and will hurt us long term the same way DRC would have.

Tanny decimated the roster, and it's going to take Idzik a few years to rebuild it. Firing Rex just when the team is becoming solid would be idiotic.

@Hanknaples  How'd he do in Cleveland, or his time with the Pats pre Brady?

Somehow Peyton Manning's coaches are all geniuses too. Funny how that works.

Let's see him win a SB with all of these exploding 3rd year players of his.

Yes 10 years wasted. Rex would have won a lot of SBs in 10 years with a Brady quality QB

@Steven Windeler

IDK if you're just trying to be contrarian but, I'm sure you understand that EVERYTHING starts at the TOP !!

So to compare the Models to the Krafts, or to the Rooneys or to ANY winning football organization is a TREMENDOUS injustice to football itself!!!

Let me remind you Payton has only won ONE SB and Rexy has won NONE as HC!!!

AND BTW, let me remind you BB is the ONLY HC that has won 11 out of THIRTEEN Divisional titles while going  151-57 over 13 regular seasons in New England, going 17-7 in the playoffs!!

I know, I know give the credit to Brady !!

Steven Windeler

@Hanknaples  Yeah, and how many divisions has Peyton won? Elite QBs win regular season games, but it takes good teams to win SBs.

If you go only by regular season wins Belechick is a genius, but go through the team player, by player, and he's a horrible GM

This last trade is a perfect example. They don't have a RG so let's trade the LG for an UDFA 4th string TE on the Bucs.

Now they have not one decent interior lineman. Genius.

Why would you watch?

UncleJoesJetFarm

@Steven Windeler @Hanknaples A horrible GM but with dominating the division for years, AFC title games, and a couple rings! I would hate to see a good GM, LOL It is only results that matter.
