To Run And Be Run On

With the Jets getting back into the practice groove today in their preparation for the Dolphins, one of the keys of the game for the Jets will be stopping the Dolphins run game and getting one of their own going.

Rich Cimini writes for ESPN five early scouting points about the Dolphins, two that focus on the run.

2. They’re all about RB Reggie Bush, the second-leading rusher (241 yards) in the league. (By the way, the top rusher is the Bills’ C.J. Spiller, who owes a big “thank you” to the Jets for that lofty perch.) Bush lit up the Raiders, rushing for 176 yards and two TDs. In fact, he has topped 100 in eight of his past 11 games. The Dolphins love to run him on outside stretch plays.

[…]

5. The secondary, minus the recently-traded Vontae Davis, is thin. But the Dolphins have a tough, aggressive front seven. They’ve yielded only 106 rushing yards in two games. In fact, they’ve gone a league-best 16 straight games without allowing a 100-yard rusher. The Dolphins held the Raiders to 1-for-12 on third down.

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

The Jets have the players to contain Reggie Bush, but the job will be easier if Bryan Thomas is available to play.  The Jets are stout up the middle with Sione Po’uha, Mike DeVito and Mo Wilkerson, not to mention David Harris cleaning up behind them.  This then should force the Dolphins to try and turn Reggie Bush and his phenomenal speed to the outside of the formation, which then starts to become the domain of the OLBs as well as the secondary.

The Jets will probably do their best to force the Dolphins to try their luck with Reggie Bush up the sidelines, and so I wouldn’t be surprised to see a reprise of the Jets “Big Nickel” package headlined by Eric Smith see a higher number of snaps than we’ve seen in weeks past.  Since the Dolphins top receiver is Brian Hartline, the Jets cornerbacks (with or without Darrelle) should be up to the challenge.

As far as the Jets running game?  That’s a whole other animal.  So far the Jets are averaging a pedestrian 3.6 yards per carry, lowlighted by Shonn Greene’s 3.1 YPC.  Factor in Football Outsiders has both the Bills (11th) and Pittsburgh (19th) run stopping units as only mediocre so far.  As Cimini noted, the Fish are off to a much better start in defending the run, granted it came against Tampa Bay and Oakland.

All that to say, the Jets combination of offensive line and running game hasn’t been dominant through two games and this might not be the week for the Jets to show dominance either …

An argument can be made that Winslow goes 1, Russell goes 2, Mudiay goes 3, and both Towns and Okafor are available to the Knicks.

Any draft carries with it 32 different opinions and values of players and needs along with which need is bigger considering what that team expects to do in free agency.

If Gasol goes to the Lakers, that is what I bet this NBA exec is banking on happening, freeing up Okafor.

One thing that has yet to be mentioned that is less ridiculous than  Stein or or the UK PG being picked 13 spots ahead of where  they should by many people, is that the Knicks CAN MOVE UP.  At least one spot as Philly did like  Mudiay at one point, and adding Hardaway to the deal as one man's trash is another's treasure.  Same with LA.    I also saw MELO going to LA for the 2 pick and Julius Randle.  Heck that is more logical.  3 pups to build around........Okafor-Randle-Mudiay.  And I am sick of players apparently not being signed or drafted because of the TRIANGLE!!!!!!!!  Without a Gasol level center THE OFFENSE DOESNT WORK ANYWAY.

Knicks will find a way to get one of Aldridge, Cousins, or Okafor  IMO.  Cousins  by trading the  pick obviously.  Or they could move down grab a Brook or  Robin Lopez type who are offensive centers and come back and grab perhaps Winslow if  lucky or Stanley Johnson.

LeCrap James took 38 shots in game 1 of NBA Finals.

Melo Yellow tweeted Phil Jax & Coach of the Yr Derek Fisher demanding he averages 40 shots nxt season - tsk tsk

Knicks please don't trade your 4th pick we need a point guard like Mudiay or Russell or move up in a pick. Don't be foolish.

@AdamZagoria Lakers go Okafor. Russell to Sixers. They need P&R player. Winslow not great handle/great shooter off the ball. Mario maybe

Rumor has Knicks and Timber wolves are discussing trading Rubio for the 4th pick and other players and they will send other draft picks our way. What do you guys think

starksoakmase
starksoakmase

@M&M; Consultants That would be the biggest disaster ever. They don't have picks in 2016 (to Boston 1-12 protected) or 2018 (to ATL 1-14 protected). So what picks would they be giving?

Anyway Rubio has one of the worst contracts in the NBA almost 14m per year over the next 4 years. No thanks......where did u hear this rumor, maybe the knicks are putting out this rumor in order to drive up the price for the pick...

I think they would play Okafor at C, then sign or trade for a rugged 4.......as far as a plan....this is only if they somehow got Okafor.....umm sign Dwayne Wade for 20 mil per then trade Hardaway JR to Denver for the the manimal Faried? They would have the cap space to do a hardaway for Faried deal....I don't know...

starksoakmase

@Anthony Gaetano DeCesare Signing Wade for that price would be paying for past performance, not future. Big mistake IMO. I like Okafor at PF playing next to a defensive C. Okafor isn't much of a rim protector...

With regard to trading the pick... i thought the Knicks couldn't because they can't trade the 1st round pick 2 years in a row. We already traded next years pick. They will have to make the deal to trade players after picking.

starksoakmase

@coralogre they can make a deal, agree to take the guy the other team wants, then make the trade after the pick i think...

I still think Mudiay is a better fit for them. Read why at www.benchwarmerhoopstalk.com

Bro there are highlights! He's going top 5 in the NBA draft for a reason!

Philly has enough bigs, they need better guards now...

@Joshua Anselmo Called what? That an unnamed NBA executive would speculate that Okafor would drop to the Knicks?

Its too early to get too excited, but I do hope your prediction comes to fruition....

Phil's record on big trades is not a good one. I don't know how excited I'd be to hear he traded down.

dfwknick
dfwknick

Watch, Knicks will trade down for minimal return, and then Okafor is available at their old #4 spot.  Typical.

starksoakmase
starksoakmase

@dfwknick the only way they trade is if Okafor is not there. They will have deals in place in case he is taken before or they don't like who is there at 4. they can make the final decision after the 3rd pick is taken....

Knicks can't trade down until after they make their selection...because we can't trade our draft pick

@M&M; Consultants and I'll bet like all drafts the pearls will not necessarily be taken in the first 8-10 picks

Tony Rojas

sorry even if Lakers pass on him.. why would philly not take him

ogren543

Because they already have two future big men (Nerlens Noel and Joel Embiid) And it would mean using their last threetop picks on big men

....can't discount Sixers gm ego....going for Okafor forces Hinkie to admit that he had no plan.  Better to play the....missing one piece card to the puzzle card....then he looks for a job in 2 years

demetra

This draft is loaded with good prospects and the Knicks will do well regardless of who will be available at 4; but if Okafor falls on their lap that would be a major step for this franchise.

rico

@demetra we have to see him play in the NBA before we label him a major step for the franchise. he didn't play to well in the FF last March. It doesn't get easier or slower in he NBA.  We'll see how good he can be in a year or so.

I would be shocked if the sixers take winslow over okafor. I dont care about noel and embid, they should have their heads examined if they do that, but teams have drafted for need before, maybe the sixers will do the same, would be great if they do....

Kenneth Reese
Kenneth Reese

@starksoakmase I wouldn't be shocked at all if they didn't take him. It makes no sense for them to take another big, being that they need help at every other position, besides center.

starksoakmase
starksoakmase

@Kenneth Reese @starksoakmase As I said before, drafting strictly for need can lead to massive busts, just ask Portland. If you have a couple of guys as basically tied, then yea, draft for need, but Okafor seems to be a much bigger impact player in the NBA when compared to winslow's potential, Okafor's ceiling is higher IMO...

Maybe Sixers trade Noel for another pick if Okafor is there at 3....

rico
rico

@starksoakmase @Kenneth Reese I would love to get Oka but would not say "his ceiling is higher than Winslow".  I think Winslow's game will grow a lot where Oka may just be what he is, yet still very very good, and more valuable than Justice W.

Ronnie Samuel

But would you be surprised if they took Mudiay or Russell over Okafor ?

starksoakmase
starksoakmase

@Ronnie Samuel not really surprised if they took Russell over Okafor, but surprised if they took Mudiay over Okafor because he didn't go to college and is more of a question mark because he played in China...

hope it happens....

Joshua Anselmo
Joshua Anselmo

Your not a question mark if your discused as a top 3 pick in this quality a draft. He's the goods bro no if and or buts about it. He's got it all except a shot but with his size speed combo who cares about his shot that can develop
