Vick: Jets don’t have open competition at QB

“Even though it’s not an open competition, we’re both competing every day,” Michael Vick said on Thursday (Walder, May 22).

Vick said that if he and Geno Smith play similarly, “I assume Geno would be the starter.”

Vick previously said that he believes Smith is the starting QB (TJB, May 3).

The Jets have said that Vick and Smith would likely compete for the starting job and that they don’t want to impede Smith’s development.

“You always want to start,” Vick told reporters today at the team facility Florham Park, NJ. “You got to find that balance for me right now, the stage that I’m at in my career. [I am] trying to help Geno, trying to help myself. [I am] trying to continue to be the best I can be, make the most of my opportunities in this situation [and] not overthink it.”

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

Before we start reading too far into this, there was a reason that Mike Vick waited 10 days after the official start of free agency to sign with a new team.  After playing with the Eagles, Vick wanted to find a team that would offer him a starting role or the opportunity to compete for the starting job.  As Vick says, every player wants to start, but that doesn’t mean they will.  When Vick signed with the Jets, it was plain there weren’t many teams willing to offer him the ability to start outright.

There is no upside to Mike Vick undermining Geno Smith if he has been told by the Jets front office that he is here to help Geno and step in *if* required.  There’s a lot of “ifs” between here and the first regular season game in September and exponentially more between the final game of the 2014 season.

While Vick might yet get a chance to start, there’s no reason to rock the boat.

Okay, I love these "teachable moments" so I am going to take advantage of this one. Rex says "Geno is our starter, and he's going to be awful hard to beat out, but Vick has a chance to win a job" Vick says "Geno is the starter on this team, I am just here to push him to be his best, and mentor him, but I am only 34, and still have a lot of football left in me". Geno says "I am the starter, and the competition from Mike is going to make me better, and will make the team better". Vick will be the starter this year. He will be noticeably better than Geno. Oh there will be a competition, but Vick wins it hands down, and all of the JETS know it except Geno. If Rex comes out and says "this job is anyone's to win, he A) creates a team cotroversy, and B) destroys Geno's confidence, and ruins what chance at developing a mobile type QB for the future. So by going this route, he has Vick for 2-3 years, then has Smith for a lot more years. If Vick says "I am after the spot" he A) alienates Geno, and B) loses the support of players who like Geno. Geno truly believes he wiill be the starter because he is supposed to! He's a young talent with a gun for an arm. He is just not ready to be a consistent starter. He doesn't look off receivers, he doesn't go to 2nd & 3rd options, and forces balls int double and triple coverages. Rex and Vick have handled this perfectly! It allows the team to accept Vick as the true leader of the team, with Geno in waiting and it gives him a chance to see that he has a lot to learn, while being able to be a man about it, and taking the opportunity to learn from Vick. If Chris Johnson heals well and gets his lost step back, and the JETS can get a quality wide receiver and cornerbacm once teams start releasing players, the JETS will be a team to fear both on offense AND defense. If that happens, I will call this GM not only a genius, but also by his real name!!! lol

The Vick hate is strong as ever lol but he is being a pro. Why feed the animals with there silly questions, just sit back & shine humbly in camp & let the spot come to you. May the best man win!

the biggest concern has to be the O line, if it's not good you can't run or pass the ball, Austin's replacement Breno hopefully will be as good as Austin, and if Dozier can eventually start at Winters spot it would help a lot, maybe next year Jets can upgrade the LB's for top talent

Odds are that Smith and Vick will both have starts this year. Regardless of who is the starter day one it is unlikely they will start the whole year.

If one thing life has taught me, is that one can't escape Karma both good and bad. It will eventually come back to you and one gets what they deserve, just saying.

Vick is clearly being politically correct. I love how he's putting all the pressure on Geno. His comments make it a win win situation for him. First the organization is happy with him for saying the right thing and Geno must be thrilled that Vick understands "his role." When Geno least expects it the knife will be in his back and Vick will be running the show...I'm guessing that's how Mike treated his dogs...

NFL.com:

"Some of the defense's youth injection came at the expense of letting Antonio Cromartie walk. That's a loss, any way you look at it."

Not really......

If Vick wasn't a dog killer he could have made a good politician...

@Pat d I think I said exactly that about Sanchez and Smith last year.  Do agree with you though.

@williamg1 We had to let him walk - he had proved he couldn't run anymore!

@williamg1  I don't think the organization wanted Cro around the young guys. He didn't follow instructions the way the Jets wanted (especially in coverage). They want players that will do as told...

@Tequila Joe @a57se  Vick is more like Jamie now that he's left handed. Geno will be Oberyn this year. Vick will be there for guidance and the illusion of strength. His page, sadly will never be filled with heroic deeds.

We have discussed that here a time or two.

When the coaches show you your stats are better when you do it their way vs. your way and you still do it your way, they will cut you as soon as you are not a dominate player anymore.  Which is exactly what happened to Cro.
