Quote: Westoff = Murtaugh

“I’m no youngster, but I know I could [return to coaching]. I didn’t like the way it ended up [in 2012].  But I’m very happy with what I’m doing, my decision to retire.  I’m not looking to get back into coaching, but I’ll always look at everything. I’ll never say ‘never.’”

– Former Jets coordinator Mike Westhoff to ESPN NY on returning to the Jets

Ah, some peace and quiet from the Facebook Zombie Apocalypse.

I think Westhoff retired at the right time and should stay retired.

I had a funny feeling he was coming back to the Jets even thou its not official But i bet that's why the ST coach left

So what is the big deal if Westoff is looking to coach only one more season? He's a great special teams coach. I'd rather have a proven coach this year and search for a new one next year rather than doing the searching this year. If you've got a good-to-great coach wanting the position this year then be happy with one year!

Westoff is going to return... like a bad case of the "triple f**king asian flu."

And, I say that with love.

Kinda surprised...seems like people don't want him back.  I thought he was pretty good.

Not sure if I want Westy back but, Idzik better understand that special teams means field position.  The Jets need to seriously upgrade this unit. Between injuries and neglect, it was not a strong part of their game.

Not sure Westy could adhere to the Jets new close-to-the-vest communication policy.

Westoff has got to be licking his lips with all the draft picks the jets have this year, im sure he realized that the back end of this roster (where alot of special teams contributions come from) is about to get a major upgrade.

Westoff needs to be a regular on all future Hard Knocks episodes so he can play the old crusty, salty, pissed off old coach and lend his pearls of wisdom to all young players.

Please, Westy, disappear to a remote Island so we can put this to rest.........

Given how 2012 went, I have to wonder if we really want him back. I mean, he's obviously a fun character, and I like the guy, but I'm not totally convinced that he can still coach.

I just want Rex & Westy mic'd up on a sideline together one more time. Is that too much to ask?

Dude, let go of it Westhoff.  You were great while you were hear, but you are no longer part of the team.  Why are these guys so unable to cut the cord?  I'm not really interested in Brad Smith calling in to let me know how his fancy pants line of clothing is going.  Westhoff can shut it.  Namath can seriously shut it.  Sometimes this blog is like a whiny graveyard.

He'd be a big improvement over Katowica for sure but I wouldn't be surprised if Idzik wants to move on from the past.

Why did he have to say that. So many on this blog have such trouble moving on as it is.

@t__kI think people are concerned that because of his age he'd just be stop gap measure, rather than a long-term solution.  IMO, there's no doubt that he's a legend and we'll never know why he wanted to retire (maybe to let Kotwicka get his shot?).  In any event, if he wants to be the Dick LeBeau of special teams for the Jets (meaning that like a Supreme Court Justice, he'd only lose his job upon death or disability), then I'd ask him back.  If he just wants a last hurrah, I'd pass.

@Brendan

The relevance eludes me.....the only Murtaugh I can think of is Danny, the guy who managed the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates to a 7 game World Series win over the Yankees (he also won in 1971) and he died in 1976.

I don't get this, are you blaming this blog for putting up this relevant quote or Westhoff for answering a direct question by saying no, but you never know.

@Pat d Why do we have to move on? can we do better than Westy at ST coach?

Pat d

People on this blog want to bring back every ex player and now this. His last year ST sucked. Move on. I don't want more of the same. I want to win a SB
